Ok - so Randy "may" be up for sale. Just re-strung with some GHS Flea signature strings and will decide whether to sell or not in the next day or so

I saw Billy S live just over a year ago in LA playing with Steve Vai - great gig & Sheehan was awesome. "Support" acts on the bill were Satriani, Gilbert, Dweezil Zappa, Lukather, Hiland, Henderson, etc. etc.. Personally I thought Sheehan blew the rest of them away but Gilbert was great as well. Vai was pretty impressive but "Satch" leaves me cold.

I have one of these- couldn't live without it!

So many 70's / 80's disco songs defined by the bass - how about Boogie Oogie Oogie by Taste of Honey - try you tubing and see if you can find a live version with the girl lead singer also playing the bass line. Of course many of Jamerson's lines were the real hooks to all of those great Motown classics. Difficult to pick just one, maybe Ain't No Mountain High Enough, original version (the later version is actually my fave but the bass is maybe more dominant in the earlier one)?

Jools Holland being live and Estelle's bassist with mad skillz
molan replied to alexclaber's topic in General Discussion
I tend to stick Jools on the series record button and then watch it over the weekend with the easy option of zipping past anything I don't like (which can often be a fair chunk of the show). Against my initial impression I really quite liked Yeasayer - especially the Sunrise. Got a bit fed up with the singer's David Byrne impressions but liked the song and thought the bass player was kinda cool, in a slightly odd way, nice "unconventional" choice of bass too -
Celebrity Gear - once used by the famous
My G&L was owned (and made for) jerry donahue of the hellecasters
I owned Jerry's custom shop Strat for several years. Bought it off him at a trade show. UK importers (Arbiter?) cocked up and sold me the only Signature Strat in the country and it was due to go to Guitarist the next day. Whislt I was waiting to collect it Jerry turned up and apologised and said he couldn't let me have the shop item but would I take the original prototype in exchange. It was hand built in the proper custom shop, with lots of stuff that never made it to the production models - real abalone inserts, higher grade custom wound pickups etc. It was also serial number 0001 - big surprise I said I'd have it if he would sign the back of the headstock as well Eventually flogged it to a mate who's a "proper" guitarist. it's still his #1 guitar & we have a deal that if he ever sells it for more than he paid me we'll split the profit! I currently have Randy Hope-Taylor's Flea bass built for him to take on tour with Jeff Beck a few years ago. I also have an old Ricky that has a set of Rotosounds on it that once had the packaging signed by Bruce Foxton - that does that count -
James Lomenzo is a Dolphin user but they work really well for Funk, among other styles (he says trying not to alienate a prospective customer base ), the guy in the Brand New Heavies was an endorse. The wider string spacing makes thumbing/slapping etc a breeze.
Been wracking my poor old mental faculties to try and remember who Warwick had as an early endorsee of the Dolphin - was it TM Stevens by any chance? One of the few bass men out there who could claim to be both "rock" & "funk" so that would kinda fit the Dolphin bill

Sounds to me like you need to trade for a nice super lightweight Kubicki really, only 7.5 lbs. . . . . . .

Wow, thanks guys, so many useful tips here! My ideal speakers would be some that are very "listenable" - the room is small and I may be sitting quite close to them but I'm not specifically looking for something that will reveal every nuance as in a proper recording environment. Most of my listening will be for "pleasure" and using for playing my bass along to and picking out bass lines.
Or even better than that, one of these, safe as houses those things.
That's the one I saw that was more expensive - might get one of these for live use. Currently have a Quick-Lock which gives basic support at the base of the guitar only.
If theres a digital village anywhere near you theyll let you test them out. Thats what i did... My HS50M's are great for bass in opinion, or if u want a lil more the Yamaha HS80M's are the same series Budget would help If none, genelec all the way
haven't really set a budget but have a pair of hi-fi speakers up for sale on the dreaded EBay and hoping to get about £600 for them. Should be able to justify this amount as a "straight swap" with the wife

As part of my ongoing music room project I'll have some space to have a couple of basses out of their cases and wondered if anyone had any recommendations - I've seen stands ranging in price from under £5 up to about £25 or so and not sure if it's worth paying extra for a home stand only?
Yes, it sounds like some used and abused models not well set-up as you mention, they certainly are not representative of any new models from Modulus. Sharp frets sounds like a well-used and abused neck or very bad maintenance. I hope you get a good price for your bass! Ciao Ian
Hi Ian, I'm inclined to agree. I'm sure one of them was being listed as new but I really don't trust some of the Soho guitar shops. I know this is, another, real generalisation but I'm astonished at how appalling the set up is of some basses I've tried in Denmark Street. Really does feel like they have some sort of "sales avoidance" policy sometimes!
Well, I'm not entirely sure about your sweeping generalisation on Modulus' quality control, where have you tried any newer Modulus basses as the quality we have experienced with every new bass we have imported over the last 10 years has been absolutely faultless, think PRS finish and quality and add another 10% and you have what Modulus have been producing. Quality control and finish has never been better so I'm again not sure how you generalise on the QC side of things being better in the past. Our customers of the last 10 years would beg to differ. The guys at Modulus have purposely kept the company to its current size to ensure that just that vital element of quality is maintained. Last time I was in the factory I learnt that the guy who fits and finishes off all the fretwork has been doing it for 12 years, a Vietnamese immigrant who simply loved his work and I have to say the frets on each and every bass we receive proves it really is some of the best fretwork on a bass guitar that we have ever seen. You can imagine that over the years in conjunction with our work with Martin Sims at the SimS Custom Shop we've seen practically nearly every make of bass guitar especially the high-end ones so I speak from experience. Regarding pricing we always try to give the best price possible subject to currency fluctuations meaning it is more cost effective to order and buy new custom built instruments from us than to buy direct from the US plus you have our backup (we only use the SimS Custom Shop as our official workshop) and official warranty. Quality is so good with Modulus instruments that we never ever get complaints. You get a great big smile when you open up the case and an even bigger one across your face when you strap the bass on, plug in and play! We're here to make your Modulus dream come true. Just some thoughts! Ciao Ian
My "sweeping generalisation" was based on a "couple" of Flea basses I've tried in Denmark Street (I've never actually seen a VJ in a shop over here in the UK). One of them had a neck that didn't feel brilliantly fitted and another had some sharp frets. These were on two separate occasions, I'd estimate maybe 18 months apart. My Flea was a complete custom build so maybe it's a fraction more "extra special" than a stock Flea - alternatively it could be that good old "Denmark Street" factor of basses not being set up very well & just stuck up on the wall for people to tinker with.
I blame the exchange rate.
You may well be right! I'm sure they used to list for much more than £1,250 new. Maybe the new distributor has managed to get a better UK price based on exchange rate. Purely personal opinion but a couple of newer Modulus basses I've tried haven't been as well finished as the older ones. Difficult to put my finger on it but just feels like quality control isn't what it was. Oh well - given that you can get a new one for £1,250 then I'll follow the advice and knock 30% off that and drop it to £875 - it really is in perfect condition
