Same with motorbikes. For many years I always 'needed' three: Big ass, shaft drive, super-reliable and comfortable tourer type for my 400 miles a week commuting. Monster engined custom bike for going out with my bike club mates and general fun riding. Very fast sports bike to remind myself why I always wanted to be a biker. Then there was the feeling I should really have a 'naked' quick bike, and my custom bike always needed just one more thing changing and, of course, every summer there was a different sports bike calling my name. I was pretty good and kept the one in, one out system going for years and, as my back weakened the sports bike has now gone but I keep looking at some of the new breed of very quick 'sports tourers' and thinking maybe. . .

I always have the volume wide open, sometimes cutting back a fraction on the very quietest songs. I also sometimes use a little pre-amp pedal for volume boost and to thicken tone on heavier rock songs.

As mentioned by someone earlier, I simply cannot listen to UB40 without feeling physically ill, such a horrible thin, straining nasal voice. Sting falls into the same category for me. I quite like some Police songs but most of his solo stuff makes me cringe! I definitely have a deep dislike of badly performed 'cod-reggae' performed by, mostly, white blokes. 10CC were maybe one of the worst ever but there's been so many bands that have tried it and it never really works.

[/quote] Playing his old favourite '66 Jazz into a Jule Monique Dove Cage preamp, Aguilar Tone Hammer TH500 power stage and a pair of Aguilar SL112's - not that I'm an anorak or anything . . .

I don't really understand the 'loud' or 'louder than' requirements. It always sounds a bit Spinal Tap to me but maybe I'm just odd! With a 2x10 8ohm cab and an 800w head (therefore running at about 500w) I never need to turn the master up beyond 11:00 and that's against two relatively loud guitarists - one of whom usually has his Vox firing right at me. Any more than that and the bass becomes overpowering and kills the broader sound of the band as a whole. There's always a little bass in the PA and it's properly mixed so that the band as a whole sounds like a cohesive unit.

I notice that the odd championship team does indeed punch above its weight in the knockout cup competitions but they always seem to fail at the last hurdle when they come against the classy premiership teams

I saw some pics of a fabulous Sadowsky custom made for Adam Clayton recently. Burgundy Mist but more of a metal flake than a regular metallic finish. Say what you like about his playing but AC really knows how to pick a pretty bass

A pair of Berg AE210's sounds huge - too much for me in fact so I only use a single one. Haven't had a chance to try the new CN210 yet but have heard good things from someone I know who's gigging one.

If you do decide to try some alternative pickups then the Aguilar AGP4 Hot is great. Really punchy and excellent if you want to drive an amp a bit harder with a passive bass

I know a pro player who uses this set up in a pretty heavy rock band without any problems. The gain and drive controls are interactive so if you have both wound up high then you could be introducing distortion right at the front end of the pre-amp.

They are great. Really nice people and super efficient. Shipping is in the lap of the Gods though. I've received things in just a few days and others that have taken weeks. It's not their fault, just the combination of US/UK postal services and customs. I've always been hit with customs and handling charges so don't forget to take those into account.

I've owned, and liked, both but I wouldn't recommend moving from the AG to the TH unless someone was looking for a warmer, rounder tone. I found the AG partnered the DB112's really well but got a bit harsh with SL112's. The TH works well with both and I wanted to switch to lighter cabs so unsold my complete AG & DB rig.

Demeter Compulator is a fine, musical, compressor that works on a 9v battery. I ran a test yesterday of the Aguilar TLC vs Demeter vs Diamond. I really like all three of these and they all do slightly different things in slightly different ways. The Aguilar runs on a 9v battery as well.
