1. Nordstrand PJ set may be going as well - I love these, just don't have any PJ basses left
2.
As a long time Aguilar and Bergantino user I have always bought their branded covers and, in my opinion, they are of much better quality, more expensive but worth the extra money. This time I needed something for my Barefaced cab and I ordered from them, bad luck I've had so time to look somewhere else...Any other good cover manufacturers out there, please?
I think both of those two make really nice padded covers. They fit well, offer decent protection and even fold down nicely without getting tatty quickly. I've often wondered why Barefaced don't offer something similar. I'm sure they'd sell well. Mind you, with all respect to Alex, I think his cabs are very much designed with sound in mind rather than looks so maybe it's an area he's not as concerned about
3. Totally agree on the 'making an effort' stuff. Every band I've been in has had some sort of clothing ethic. I always think people should know you're 'in the the band' and haven't just stumbled in off the street
4. The single Wizard J has now gone as well. Looks like there's some more pickups and a few pre-amps buried away too!
5. I have to admit that I really don't like Roqsolid covers. The ones I've seen have fitted their designated cabs pretty well but I've always found them a bit 'basic'. Ok as dust covers and maybe to protect from really minor scrapes but not in the same league as the ones some of the major cab builders sell to go with their cabs. I've always thought it was a 'you pays your money and you takes your choice' kinda thing - my money has always gone elsewhere
6. Wow, a blackface 201, these are just great pre-amps!
7. Quick update on the BL46's. I went through the buying process online to get an accurate price for a new set and it came in at £72 after taking into account shipping, duties and clearance fees etc. Pretty good price given the quality of these! Mine have literally been fitted once, tried and removed but, given the cost of new ones, I'll make mine £45 and include UK postage
8. Two members of my band use them all the time and have never had problems
9. I really, really don't like stringing through a body so loose ferrules would seriously annoy me! It won't be the shop's fault but they should offer to fix them for free. I doubt they'd give any additional compensation though because it will have arrived that way from Fender and I don't know of any shop that would remove the stock strings from a bass to check if the ferrules were properly seated.
10. I think USPS tracking basically stops once it hits the final airport destination in the USA. It doesn't pick up that it might already have hit the UK and got bogged down locally here. If there's duty to pay then Parcelforce will post you a confirmation and this can easily add a week or two to delivery time. For small items I've pretty much given up on USPS because it's got way too slow over the last year. One of our suppliers insists on using them and we've had some 8-10 week delivery times for pickups and parts
11.
Pretty sure we've had this discussion before... USA is a bigger market and there is more competition, so lower prices. Mark Bass gear used to be the same price in $ as it was over here in £.
Plus the size of market means volume purchases are higher and greater volume almost always means lower pricing (for a host of different reasons). Bulk shipping to and from the US is way cheaper than low volume shipping inside Europe too.
12.
How much for the BL P-46?
Can't find anyone selling them in the UK so how about something like £50 shipped?
13.
Great condition this is in. I have one I'm yet to intergrate onto my setup. The distortion is super gnarly and the clean sounds are really Tubey, nice and thick
The nicest thing is that you can use both tones independently and then combine them at the tap of a foot switch
14. Every time this comes up for sale I think how nice it looks
15. The SL's have been around for quite a while now and there's a lot of them out there on the gig circuit. I've seen quite a few serious pro players using them as 'everyday' cabs for smaller club gigs where hey don't need their really large rigs. I certainly know people who use them as an alternative to both GS and DB setups and there's definitely an Aguilar 'signature' tone across the range. I've spent a lot of time with these and they are my favourite of the lightweight 12" cabs. The Bergantinos are good but, to my ears, the SL's are less 'neo' sounding and have a deeper, rounder, low end whilst the Bergs are more articulate and clean. Like most Aguilar kit the really come alive in a live gigging situation
16. I was told the other day (by someone connected with Warwick so I've just assumed it's true) that there are no UK dealers selling German made Warwicks any more I've seen a full 2014 price list and I was genuinely surprised at just how high everything was. I always knew the Signature models had gone a bit crazy but thought they were effectively all custom builds so I could understand it. It's stuff like Streamers and Thumbs that amazed me
17. Here's a great Pearce BC1 twin channel pre-amp as used by Billy Sheehan & John Myung. As far as I know Sheehan still uses his in his rack, though he says he only has three left before "that's the end of it." He uses it for both distortion and clean tones and it sounds just fabulous! In fact here it is in Billy's rack: And here is Billy talking about it (comes in around 4:30). As he puts it "The Pearce pre-amp is just a supremely great distortion and clean. The clean is always on, the distortion comes off and on as necessary" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_KY6SiI1gY One of the key factors in this pre is the ability to use either channel singly or to combine them. This allows you to set up a nice clean tone and then add killer distortion which is switchable in and out via the, supplied, VooDooMan footswitch (this switch is a real 'must have' to make the most of this pre!). Overall it's in very good condition - there's the usual rack-rash on the top and around the ears but nothing nasty on the face and all controls work smoothly and just how they should. I've not seen one for sale recently but there's one on USA eBay at £480 plus VAT, duties & shipping so I thought £550 seemed about right. I can ship more or less anywhere and will only charge actual shipping costs - I'd estimate UK to be about £20. I'm sure most people reading this far will have a good idea of what this pre is all about but, just in case, here's an online review I found of the Pearce (it's not a pro review & I've cleaned up some waffle here & there but hopefully it gives a user perspective) : Overall Rating: 5 Stars I just love the Pearce BC1 pre amp. With the right power amp, it tangos with the best of them. I would definitely purchase another one of these if I ever got this one stolen...that's if I could find another, since they're hard to come by. The one aspect I wish this pre amp had is an 9-15-? band equaliser BUT........you do have the option of using both channels combined and can really fine tune your sound which makes up for it. To anyone who reads this...If you can find one of these pre amps out there I strongly suggest to try it out and see for yourself. (But remember...everyone has their own likes and dislikes.) Features: 4 Stars This pre amp is solid state. It has 2 channels, which can be used separately or coupled, w/ built in distortion. It has a -10dB/0dB/+10dB switch (pretty cool if you need less or more punch without having to change your settings all the time). Each channel has a gain - bass - mid range - mid - treble - fx return - volume controls and overall fx send and built in compressor/limiter with adjustable threshold. The one thing I like the most about this pre amp is that you can use each channel separately, or combine them to create a wide range of tones. Sound Quality: 4 Stars The bass I use the most with this rig is a custom Lado with active pickups. I can't complain about the sound I get, it gets me though anything. It keeps up very well to 2 cranked Marshalls and amazingly enough, the Pearce BC1 is still very quiet at high volumes. Ease of Use: 5 Stars I find this pre amp to be extremely user friendly. You have none of that farting around with manuals and programming and blah, blah, blah. It's simple and to the point. The tone knobs are fairly sensitive. So you don't have to turn the controls much to adjust your sound. I've tried Fender, Ampeg and Hartke, and I find that this pre amp can tango with the best of them. Durability: 4 Stars I've had this pre amp in my road case for about a year and it hasn't let me down yet. Since there's no tubes, I don't have to baby my road case as much and worry whether or not I've blown a tube. The only thing I've noticed though is that the control pots could have been made a little tougher, mind you I haven't had to touch them in 3 months or so. Here's a few pics of the actual unit: If anyone wants to test the Pearce out then it'll be at BassGear in Twyford for a while
18.
How much for the BL P-46?
Sorry missed this question - I'll have a hunt and try to see how much they are over here
19.
Can't recommend the Carvin BX500 highly enough - £350 ish from Bass Gear for a US built hybrid amp.
There's a new BX700 now that adds a bit more power, a cleaner & more modern looking chassis, and it glows red too (obviously the glow in the dark bit is the most important!).
20. Was really looking forward to trying a Prodigy recently but the fuse went pop after about 10 minutes of warming up and we couldn't get it to come back to life
21. Spector every time for me. I really like US Spectors but Warwicks generally leave me cold. The NS5XL was one of my favourites when I was still playing 5's.
22. Great basses but make sure you play them before buying. Some of these have some serious neck issues and unless you like a very high action then it can be a bitch to get these ones even reasonably low. There can sometimes be problems with the lacquer on the body paint. Again this is fairly random and in many cases just adds to character but every now and then you find one where lacquer on the back of the body is cracking quite nastily
