NAD - Ashdown Toneman 600 (tips for good tone)
uk_lefty replied to paddy109's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had a toneman combo, great little amp! Stick all the rotary eq dials on 12 o'clock then twiddle from there. I used to have bass at 1 to 2 o'clock, treble at the same then the mids either 12 o'clock or slightly pushed up. Not complicated but gave a good "through the mix" tone with the band when playing either p or j bass. -
Advice needed about entry to 5 string
uk_lefty replied to meltedbuzzbox's topic in General Discussion
I started playing bass aged fifteen and got my first five string for my eighteenth birthday. Having a good quality bass with more options on it really opened up and improved my playing. I was by no means a master of the four string at that point! My five string was relatively cheap but these days a good bass can be bought for less than five hundred quid! Obviously second hand gets you more for the money too. If you want to do it and you can afford it I say jump right in. It doesn't take long to get used to it and it could really benefit your playing. Good luck! -
Fender strap locks in chrome. These have been used but well looked after, good as new I'd say. I've got two sets to sell, both have been on fender basses and done an admirable job but I always forget to use them when changing basses at a gig! Which is what they're for, so if I'm not using them properly there's not a lot of point. So two pairs for sale, don't worry if someone else gets in for a set before you! Sale price is £8 for one pair.

Insane one-man Rush tribute (not that one!)

I know... Especially the Daphne blue version!! I do like the Sire vintage V7... And the V9... And the M7... And their PJ bass. All quality basses within my range. And there's an ibanez model with nordstrands kicking about too... Plan is that my jazz bass will wear flats, P bass remains the same (flats and badass bridge) and my fretless remains my only fretless. But it could all change!

Rikki that is the 6 million Lire question! Even with the paucity of options for lefties I'm spoiled for choice. I have a lot covered with the three basses I already own but I am tempted by most of the Sire basses, the Warwick Star, a Warwick corvette if I save enough, a fender USA or Japanese jazz, or even something custom made but costing less than a grand... It's all to play for! Oh, and then eBay and the forum throw up the odd second hand bargain too.
-
Thanks, pretty much my criteria, except I add a third because I'm a tight Yorkshireman: 3. Where can I get it cheapest? Or in this case, When can I get it cheapest!

That is a gorgeous piece of woodwork. All the best to you!

For the first time in many years I may be in the market for a new bass. I've sold off some gear that I wasn't using and I want to treat myself a bit, but being savvy about it I don't want to rush out with my pocket money to the nearest sweet shop... Are "January sales" something that the big music retailers join in with? There's been some lefty bargains on eBay recently but I've managed to restrain myself. I am attracted to buying a new instrument rather than second hand but just want to know what the state of play is likely to be. Thanking you in advance!

Not having the A or D on my four strings would mess with my head completely. Only ever broke rubbish very cheap strings in my teens when trying to learn to play slap style. Hasn't happened since but even if I only want to play one bass in the gig there's always another either in stage or in the car, don't want to ruin a gig by mucking up trying to play three stringed.

Your favourite rock and jazz albums of all time?
uk_lefty replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
All three have been mentioned before but not in by the same person... Pearl Jam, Ten Guns n Roses, Appetite for Destruction Paul Simon, Graceland -
There's one at every gig! If you enjoy the bass and think you'll get something from it then get it. I was always told I'd look like a n0b playing a headless body less bass but it sounded amazing and the photographer got loads of great shots, more shots of me with that bass than the first half with my precision. I did play in shorts and hiking sandals though and got rightfully slated for that, but never the bass.

uk_lefty replied to TheGreek's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
A mate of mine had one of these and played tons of gigs with it, always sounded good in his hands. £50 is a good deal from where I'm sat -
For the EB1 if I wanted that style id go to Eko and probably safe a few quid?

Players that don't warrant a signature bass
uk_lefty replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
There's loads that dont "deserve" it but you see the chap from Fall Out Boy endorses a squier, good move because that's his audience. The Nikki Sixx signature bass however is a pj on a Thunderbird body and costs over a grand. No way! -

Unfortunately being a "vlogger" is somehow a career. Just don't get too popular or you're no longer "influential", apparently. Mainstream isn't cool! Sorry, I'm deviating from the op a little but I had to listen to a load of this guff in a marketing meeting. Major retailers pay tens of thousands to bedroom webcam ranters and show offs to mention their products, it's another form of advertising, or even for them to wear something and not mention it. Celebrities get paid to mention a product on twitter, now I can understand why you'd want the same footy boots as Ronaldo but why would you want the same loo paper as a coronation Street actor....? Like everything, the modern world will always change in ways that baffle the over thirties. We just don't have to join in with it! So we don't have to listen to Scott Devine's "six reasons five strings suck" (they don't, he even says so) and we don't have to LOL at Davie whatever he is. We don't have to watch it. We still have choice... For now. -
Definitely building in the idiot factor, the dreamers and time wasters and the horrendous eBay fees! Even when you add to eBay "advertised elsewhere" which to me is a not so subtle way of saying "for goodness sake just buy it off my gumtree ad!" You still get people who tell you they'd seen it on gumtree etc but transacted through eBay anyway

I bought a nodded jazz bass. It's from the worst era of MIM basses (mid 90's) but with the first owners mods and now more from me I love it as a gigging bass! It's worth the square root of bog all though, if I ever sold it I'd need to break it up, the neck and body are so beaten up they're worthless... But I gig it so for me I got a good deal. Dumb luck though

Very true, was in a meeting about this yesterday where everyone over thirty was staggered we would pay for someone to Instagram a photo of one of our products. Unfortunately it's in every aspect of work, I saw someone taking photos of the food in front of him at a conference then "tweeting" it or whatever he did. The conference was nothing to do with food, but he felt the need to show his 'followers' that along with some comment. Apparently you need a social media presence no matter what you do. I've thought of it for my professional life then immediately given myself a thrashing for having such a stupid thought. -
I would never say any bass player must love or even like Jaco. Personally I do, I like the music and the personality but I totally understand why other people would not like it. For example, I find some of the weather report stuff to sound quite dated now with the synth sounds, etc. Though the musicianship is incredible. With Jaco I never thought it was technical wizardry just for the sake of doing something complex, I always hear a groove there, and I love finding bits of his work with other people or his versions of songs like "I shot the sheriff". He had a distinctive voice, and if that's not your thing, that's ok by me.

Sells on eBay in a few hrs. Bought off eBay recently on a whim, turns out I don't think I'll use it much at all and it's too much pedal board re-jigging for me. Excellent condition with original box. Selling for £45 posted in the UK. Source audio do a great online demo. Note this is the original version, not the pro. Here's a link to the full description: http://www.sourceaudio.net/products/legacy/multiwave_bass_distortion.php. If you watch their YouTube demo there's some great sounds from the pedal and some stuff that might make you raise an eyebrow, but with the ability to blend in clean tone you can dial down some of the wacky stuff and make it very useable. There's some good stuff that's almost bass balls like and some good octave fuzz type effects too. *Photos added 24 Nov*

Hi Grangur, We are a covers band, rock, pop, soul, blues and funk. We go from chuck berry to mark Ronson via Bryan Adams and Duran Duran. The criteria for our set is: will people sing AND dance along?? Not a foolproof formula but tends to work! We have an out of date Facebook page that I might update when I get chance, with photos, videos and so on. Are you local and thinking of coming along? Would be good to meet a basschatter. ☺️
