1. Guys and girls who are both the bassist and lead vocalist, what's your set list? Best be covers specific I'm afraid! Looking to branch out a bit and get some inspiration from you folk. Thank you!
2. Warwick Streamer LX. Great bass "on paper", really high spec but I just couldn't coax out a tone I liked as much as what I could get from a big standard Mexican fender jazz. The Warwick pops up for sale every now and then (being a lefty you do spot the old ones coming back up!) and I have been tempted to re buy it just to see if I was missing something...
3.
I can definitely see the attraction in the 'practice' being the main event. You get together and you play. That's the event. I enjoy playing gigs but there's plenty about gigging that's a total PITA. It's nothing to do with hard work, it's about tedium, getting messed around and dealing with idiots. Hours of hanging around for one. City parking restrictions near venues. Arrangements bearing no relation to what you agreed. Sitting around in bars not being able to drink because of the playing and the driving. Sound guys not following the rider even though they've had it for three months (no monitors??). I spent an hour of Sunday evening just sitting on my rig out in the street because the promoter had given us the wrong load-in time. Then he let the band before us significantly over-run and let them stand around chatting on the stage afterwards, preventing us setting up, so our set-time (in the printed and electronic listings - it was a festival) was completely wrong and very late. As the icing on the cake, just as we were due to kick off, he announced that some urban artists (his mates, I assume) would be doing a two song showcase before we played. This basically killed the audience who were there for a world-music type programme. Just playing and recording definitely feels attractive a lot of the time.
Yep! I'm at a point now where I'm getting the impression my band wants to grow faster than I want. Gigs further away for more money. I don't think we are as good as the ambition yet and I don't have the time to put in to getting there. Sometimes I think going to a studio and helping someone bring their musical vision to a recording would be far less stress. It's just my point in life, got a baby to support and a wife that I don't want to leave doing all the work while I go off doing band things. I drove over 2hrs for the last gig which I won't get paid for. It's created leads for other gigs but in even more remote places. I love the band, but need the balance in my life more.
4. I can't see a real-world use for it. Now a fretless with a slap-bar at the end of the neck I can see, but this, no.
5.
Cool jap P bass in 3tsb http://rvrb.io/2002-2004-62-reiss-2ea
Good deal! I've got the 1970 Japanese reissue and it's excellent
6. It's just gone out of fashion for a while. Remember when all pop songs had some fretless mwaaaaah going on? It will be back soon.
7. I've played Slade before, nice bassline. Lonely this Christmas by Mud is great, probably not appropriate in an old folks home though.
8. Remains for sale after a gumtree person was very engaged for a few days but then said they need something lighter!!!! Lighter than 14kg for a 1x15... Mind boggles.
9. Murray's bar, Scarborough 2002 Age 18 Bass: Kramer fretless 5 (gigged it twice last month, love it) Amp: whatever backline was there Set list: the original songs from my band, Guantanamo followed by our Hendrix medley. It went incredibly well, even though I played part of the Hendrix medley into he wrong key! Which is quite hard to do when the whole thing was deliberately in E to make the medley easier. I wore a band t-shirt, khaki jeans and some really crappy trainers. I looked terrible. It was a local live music all day event. Our slot kept getting pushed further and further back, but when we got on we loved it. The guitarist and drummer were loads more experienced than me, and excellent at what they did, and I just played simple baselines with the odd fill or slide. Will never forget it. To keep cool I decided to "entwistle" it by standing still and looking moody... People kept coming up mid set to ask if I was ok!
10.
Thanks! Just seen what I think is the one you're talking about. It's got a p pickup in it sadly and I think maybe was a ripper too judging by the headstock? Obviously I could be wrong lol but thanks though Didn't know Aria did some so that's another name to search for
Sorry mate, I don't know my Rippers from my Grabbers! Being left handed it's hard to get excited or interested in Gibson basses.
11. I saw an Aria one recently, might have been on gumtree. Was in the last few days. Sorry I can't be more specific, it was right handed and not what I was looking for, but it did catch my eye. I haven't looked anywhere other than gumtree or eBay recently so it was one or the other.
12. Play a completely different genre of music to get different feel, approaches and shapes on the fretboard in to your playing. It will all pay off when you let loose on improvising. Playing in a band will really help, it pushes out the creativity far better than playing along to a cd at home.
13. My MIM Jazz is a bit of a test bed for upgrades. I got it in less than perfect condition and I'm ok with it getting the odd knock, it's solid but it's been through the wars including a very fine drill bit going straight through the headstock. My precision was perfect until my drummer knocked it off its stand and it has a tiny thumbnail looking dint in it from a cymbal. Complete accident and no real harm done. If my fretless Kramer on the other hand tool a knock I would be livid. It was my 18th birthday present, the only current bass I have that I owned from new. The back of the neck has changed colour over the years from sunlight and hand sweat but the metallic paint finish is perfect. Gigging it this weekend I was conscious of my sweaty arm digging in to the side of the bass...
14. I have a Harley Benton micro pedal tuner that doesn't work properly so it's free to a good home, anyone who tinkers with pedals might want this. Let me know
15. Ashdown 115T RM cab. 250w 8ohm cab weighing 14kg. Superb cab, great deep sound... So good I use two! Problem is that's far too much volume so I really don't need both and have to downsize. Excellent condition, very well looked after, always kept indoors, never left in the car overnight. Item is for collection from St Albans
16. For sale is a "lead foot" single footswitch. It has an extraordinarily long jack lead. It does the on/ off thing beautifully, but has no led light indicator, sadly. I've had it for over 18months but used sparingly. Surplus to requirements so let me know if you want or need it. Can be collected from near St Albans or posted to you at cost.
17. I recently bought ACS off the shelf ear plugs based on recommendations here. First time I used them I didn't feel "connected" with the band but I know my hearing has been damaged in the past and isn't going to get better. I have used them once since when we had rubbish boomy PA speakers in the practice room and felt far more comfortable and involved. I can only guess the custom sets will take things up a notch.
18. Mine can be anything from p bass in to ashdown head and two fifteens, to jazz or fretless river or headless active in to loads of pedals that rarely ever get used, maybe for small passages in one song only (flanger, chorus, enhancer for the fretless), amp has built in drive which is v good. I used to use a hartke vxl but since upgrading my amp it's out of a job. I often muck around with pedals and things but in my view you can't beat a nice full bass sound with occasional overdrive.
19. With all of these though you run the risk of tone of voice not coming through. I have had a band member seriously throw his toys out of the pram over something, and we all thought he was joking so we piled in, turned out he really was upset over something everyone else thought wasnt an issue and we made it worse thinking it was a joke. Hard one to judge.
20. I don't think your message to the drummer was entirely unreasonable but could see why some take more offence than others. Because contractual pedantry pays my mortgage I would say there's a difference between "are you available on x date?" With no follow up and "are you available on x date?" Followed up with "great news guys, gig is confirmed" so everyone knows it is now set in stone. I know sometimes you shouldn't have to confirm everything twice over, but it does help.
21.
I have a jazz p j bass https://reverb.com/item/1372259-fender-vintage-hot-rod-70s-jazz-bass-candy-apple-red-rosewood-187
Always liked the look of those. Nobody ever asks about fitting a p pickup to a jazz, always fitting a jazz pickup to a p...
22. They call it a windbreaker in the ad so that I'd suggest the buyer douses it in febreeze to get rid of the farty smell
