1. I think also we have most of us met that type of musician and so I am very keen not to come across as that type when suggesting songs or arrangements in my band, I try to do it in as respectful and non ego way as possible. And I will suggest songs with rubbish bass parts if it fits the band.
2. I've had it in the last few years with a drummer. An odd guy, harmless but odd, who just didn't get the concept of what the band wanted to do, despite having a good ten or twelve song set list. I've seen him about since in rehearsal rooms, up to the same tricks... Going off and spending ages complaining about bits of kit etc. for the whole night while the band waits for him, being the loudest voice in the whole building regardless of everyone else. The band leader at the time handled a polite rejection well and just felt that the guy was looking for some friends and some recognition. A bit sad really as he was an ok drummer, just not someone you want to have in a group with you for the incessant talking, having to be centre stage (literally, wanted his drum kit front and centre for gigs with the band behind him) despite it still being his try-out, and not listening or understanding what the rest of us were trying to put together.
3. I've never played a bad trace combo or head at over 150 watts output. They're all over the marketplace and gumtree etc for excellent prices because of the weight. I've never had a better sounding amp and when we have a trace in our rehearsal room I don't bring my rig out the car, I just love the tone with any bass playing any style, though I don't like trace pre set eq shape but luckily you can turn that on or off. A trace is definitely giggable. If you get a 300 watt combo you will likely never need more output than that for a gig, but you might struggle to get it down low enough for bedroom playing. Do not underestimate the weight though! O can shift some weight but the size and weight of old trace really did for my back and led it to be sold, sadly.
4. Was the heavily relic'd fender jazz his Jaco bass? CME to think of it that got re finished... Trujillo is a monster of a bassist and comes across as a thoroughly decent person. I have watched his bass audition for Metallica on YouTube a few times, not just for the quality of his playing but the genuine child like happiness of being chosen to be their next bass player.
5. I'm seriously considering a Sire bass and while I'd prefer if most of the models didn't have the Marcus name on it I don't think many people will actually know who he is or even be able to see it from off the stage. Luckily the basses are quite generic in appearance, it's not like it's the Gene Simmons Axe bass! Just got to choose which bass, they all look excellent and the options for lefties are superb.
6. I have a four string Hohner B2A, through neck, with a fitted hard case which is vinyl with a zip(!!), It must be an older version as the pickups are actual EMGs not the "EMC" pickups they now have. It has active two band eq but sounds excellent passive. I had all the frets levelled and a full service by my local luthier in January, checking every single part. I love this bass for the look at feel of the lightweight body and fast neck, but the string spacing is tighter than I like (don't know exact measurements but it's tighter than fender standard). I haven't had the bass out the case for months and haven't taken it to a gig since February, so it is just in its case under my spare bed not being used as much as it should. Any interest? PM me and we can see. I have detailed photos that I can share and I have recordings using this bass on SoundCloud. I'm based near St Albans and any prospective buyer is welcome to try it out Photos now here!
7. It seems eBay did put a best offer thing on my listing, it just isn't an option to add or remove it, at least not in the android app. I received an offer today at thirty quid less than selling price from someone local. Wish he or she had seen gumtree a few weeks back!
8. Listed an item that I've been unable to sell here or gumtree, can't seem to allow for best offers which would be my preferred way of getting interest in the item. Has this feature been removed or just harder to find these days?
9. I have an MIJ P and an MIM Jazz. For me the P can have a better sound in the band mix. I don't have an issue with the chunkier neck having played only a fiver for a long period. My jazz is beaten half to death and has been used as an experiment platform to the point the only original bits left are the body and neck and maybe some screws. Playing at home I favour the jazz on the bridge pickup, just sounds best for noodling about. On the band I need my jazz for its drop d tuner and for if I fancy playing a slap fill in a song. My P has flatwounds and I could play it on absolutely everything if I so desired, just a slight change of flavour to compensate for the few things it can't do. I have four basses, I try to gig them all but my last two gigs have been played exclusively on my five string fretless. No reason other than what I feel like playing at the time. Different basses change what and how I play, but it's rare that I let the set list or any other factor dictate my choice of bass. I like to keep things moving and changing so I'll go from p bass and Di box for my sound to fretless and amp eq... No dramatic changes and few people probably even notice except me and the drummer. If I was recording then the choice of bass would take a much more prominent role I guess, but knocking out covers for people to sing and dance along to as long as I'm giving a good foundation to the sound and driving the bottom end I could do it with either p or j to the same effect.
10.
When doing a version of something, I reckon it's best to learn the original first- then make your own natural changes to make it heavier/ rockier etc. It's a great song, so will go down well in most places. In one of my bands we did something a bit like this with Mama Mia - not quite so quick, girl singer - guaranteed dancers and smiles https://youtu.be/Ql89SQzpquU
That's a lot better
11. Dreadful. If you're going to rock it up do it properly, not just have a mildly distorted guitar playing over a carbon copy version of the original.
12. Suppose o should have shared my own! Not doing lead vocals at the mo but in the past I was responsible for singing and sometimes murdering some of the following while playing bass. Not all in the same band, I should add: Light my fire Hey Joe Voodoo child slight return Stuck in the middle with you Message in a bottle Mama told me not to come Wishing well Anarchy in the UK NIB All along the watchtower Will add more when I can remember back a bit further!
13. Still for sale... PM me
14. Guys and girls who are both the bassist and lead vocalist, what's your set list? Best be covers specific I'm afraid! Looking to branch out a bit and get some inspiration from you folk. Thank you!
15. Warwick Streamer LX. Great bass "on paper", really high spec but I just couldn't coax out a tone I liked as much as what I could get from a big standard Mexican fender jazz. The Warwick pops up for sale every now and then (being a lefty you do spot the old ones coming back up!) and I have been tempted to re buy it just to see if I was missing something...
16.
I can definitely see the attraction in the 'practice' being the main event. You get together and you play. That's the event. I enjoy playing gigs but there's plenty about gigging that's a total PITA. It's nothing to do with hard work, it's about tedium, getting messed around and dealing with idiots. Hours of hanging around for one. City parking restrictions near venues. Arrangements bearing no relation to what you agreed. Sitting around in bars not being able to drink because of the playing and the driving. Sound guys not following the rider even though they've had it for three months (no monitors??). I spent an hour of Sunday evening just sitting on my rig out in the street because the promoter had given us the wrong load-in time. Then he let the band before us significantly over-run and let them stand around chatting on the stage afterwards, preventing us setting up, so our set-time (in the printed and electronic listings - it was a festival) was completely wrong and very late. As the icing on the cake, just as we were due to kick off, he announced that some urban artists (his mates, I assume) would be doing a two song showcase before we played. This basically killed the audience who were there for a world-music type programme. Just playing and recording definitely feels attractive a lot of the time.
Yep! I'm at a point now where I'm getting the impression my band wants to grow faster than I want. Gigs further away for more money. I don't think we are as good as the ambition yet and I don't have the time to put in to getting there. Sometimes I think going to a studio and helping someone bring their musical vision to a recording would be far less stress. It's just my point in life, got a baby to support and a wife that I don't want to leave doing all the work while I go off doing band things. I drove over 2hrs for the last gig which I won't get paid for. It's created leads for other gigs but in even more remote places. I love the band, but need the balance in my life more.
17. I can't see a real-world use for it. Now a fretless with a slap-bar at the end of the neck I can see, but this, no.
18.
Cool jap P bass in 3tsb http://rvrb.io/2002-2004-62-reiss-2ea
Good deal! I've got the 1970 Japanese reissue and it's excellent
19. It's just gone out of fashion for a while. Remember when all pop songs had some fretless mwaaaaah going on? It will be back soon.
20. I've played Slade before, nice bassline. Lonely this Christmas by Mud is great, probably not appropriate in an old folks home though.
21. Remains for sale after a gumtree person was very engaged for a few days but then said they need something lighter!!!! Lighter than 14kg for a 1x15... Mind boggles.
22. Murray's bar, Scarborough 2002 Age 18 Bass: Kramer fretless 5 (gigged it twice last month, love it) Amp: whatever backline was there Set list: the original songs from my band, Guantanamo followed by our Hendrix medley. It went incredibly well, even though I played part of the Hendrix medley into he wrong key! Which is quite hard to do when the whole thing was deliberately in E to make the medley easier. I wore a band t-shirt, khaki jeans and some really crappy trainers. I looked terrible. It was a local live music all day event. Our slot kept getting pushed further and further back, but when we got on we loved it. The guitarist and drummer were loads more experienced than me, and excellent at what they did, and I just played simple baselines with the odd fill or slide. Will never forget it. To keep cool I decided to "entwistle" it by standing still and looking moody... People kept coming up mid set to ask if I was ok!
23.
Thanks! Just seen what I think is the one you're talking about. It's got a p pickup in it sadly and I think maybe was a ripper too judging by the headstock? Obviously I could be wrong lol but thanks though Didn't know Aria did some so that's another name to search for
Sorry mate, I don't know my Rippers from my Grabbers! Being left handed it's hard to get excited or interested in Gibson basses.
24. I saw an Aria one recently, might have been on gumtree. Was in the last few days. Sorry I can't be more specific, it was right handed and not what I was looking for, but it did catch my eye. I haven't looked anywhere other than gumtree or eBay recently so it was one or the other.
25. Play a completely different genre of music to get different feel, approaches and shapes on the fretboard in to your playing. It will all pay off when you let loose on improvising. Playing in a band will really help, it pushes out the creativity far better than playing along to a cd at home.
