1. Interesting... Is it a costly job?
2. Sold my Warwick streamer LX for 450 and my Warwick sweet 15 combo for about 100 because I was in a dead end job (taken after redundancy from a good job) and the sh!tty company wouldn't pay for me to do a training course. I did the course paying a grand of my own money and within a month or two had a new higher paid job, the end justified the means. It's all just stuff and life is definitely more important, I find I lust after this stuff just when I don't have enough other stuff to occupy my mind. Stuff comes back around or is forgotten about quite easily.
3. Currently using an Ashdown Toneman combo bought brand new. Frighteningly I think this list might be long... Been playing 18yrs: All combos Cheap practice beginner combo 100watt torque Massive old Peavey, loud as hell Marshall bass state B150 Brand new torque 100watt Vox escort 50 lead/ bass Carlsboro stingray (??) Combo. Was massive and loud Warwick sweet 15 No amp for a while and barely playing... Hartke kickback 15 Gallien Krueger backline 110 Trace Elliot rig now owned by The Greek Ashdown toneman bought brand new What have I learned?? There's great deals on second hand amps all the time. Test second hand amps properly, the Marshall had great tone but was weirdly quiet. I love the sound of Hartke, Trace and GK amps, quite like a Marshall or Warwick. Don't sell a classic vox amp, no matter what. You will always think something else is what you actually need... I now use a hartke pre amp pedal in to my ashdown. Having time on my hands recently I've been lusting after new basses and amps, but really I have everything I need for my band. Might not stop me buying a nice hartke if a good deal comes up though. Then I'll have my eye out for a Gk...
4. How did you do the polyester coat? What has it brought to the sound?
5. Stayed away from picks largely, only used them for things too fast to play with my fingers and even then it was only the odd passage in a song... And then I got a precision! I'm catching up on pick technique because I want to play across all strings but there's something about playing flats on a p with a pick that you can't capture with anything else.
6.
I have a lefty Sire very nice bass I had the frets leveled and it plays with a nice low action, I have owned a KSD 4 string Jazz was OK but the sire has a better sounding active onboard preamp I would go for the sire
Thank you!
7.
I think that UK Lefty, Lozz and I all use the same luthier, Terry Chapman of TJC Guitars. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjnjPy3hKvRAhWEPRoKHSg7APIQFggdMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tjcguitars.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNFhzoToAoLBTVF3ZXZxjCI4QCVe4w&sig2=PQ2omjsclIbcLRoBM0fNiw Generally costs around £10-15 depending on what you need to have done. Terry's a top bloke too - other than being a guitarist.
Yep! Taking him one instrument a month for the foreseeable.
8. Depends where you are and who you ask! And how much other work is involved. If you're near to Stevenage let me know, I can recommend someone. I get intonation, neck relief and a quick clean done while changing strings for twenty five quid, not including strings. I prefer having someone with experience and all the right kit do this on my better instruments. I've just had a fret level, basic set up, thorough clean including electrics and some neck issues sorted on a bass for sixty five quid. The neck issues cost me an extra twenty, cost would have been forty five. However, I know some places want over a hundred for a fret level... It pays to shop around!
9. Made a small-ish order and the design is purely for promo purposes. I rarely use a pick so it won't bother me but the guitarists can choose to use them or not. Either way I think its a nice thing to give out when knocking on doors to get gigs
10. Just ordered from ownguitarpick. Fifty double sided with band logo and Facebook link for thirty three quid shipped. Will let you know first impressions by the weekend
11.
The Sire V7s are indeed the canine testes, but do they make lefties?
Yes they do, and in loads of colours
12. Would be interesting to compare a KSD to a Sire
13. Without custom ordering and spending under a grand what are our options? Do the KSD basses still get produced? I've seen SX but they're a bit lower range than I'd like. Schechter? No idea if they're worth the cost... Any others?
14. Pearl Jam, Ten. That album persuaded me to get a fretless as my main bass years ago when I was in a heavy rock band. The playing is tasteful and excellent, Alive is a good fretless tune.
15. Yep I do have one! Trying to find decent picks so they can actually be used as well as having band logo and Facebook address printed. Would be good if anyone has a recommendation otherwise could just be throwing money in to the unknown
16. Has anyone ever had custom guitar picks made? Want to do some for my band using our logo and have seen on Google theres loads of places that can do it, just wondering if there's any that are recommended? Ideally looking for a range of pick weights for our guitarists and myself (I like the big ones that look like Doritos) and that we could hand out as promotional items
17. Now sold For sale or trade, Mooer thunderball. Good pedal, similar to ehx bass blogger. Fuzz or distortion. I wrote a little review on here some months back. Not getting used as I have two other sources of distortion/ od on my board. Looking to either sell or trade for something comparable in value, could be a delay or octave? I'm based near st Albans. Please pm me with any queries.
18. Hey Joe. Easy bassline but always come back to noodling with it to put in rests and change the feel. Probably one of the first things I learned on bass, but a great one to tinker with on a jam.
19. I have the 4 string B2A with EMG pickups, great bass. Got mine in vgc with the original hard case (which is vinyl covered and zips up) was less than 300
20. Interesting convo... I've just bought a house built in 1960 that has broken two drill bits so far, one drilled through bathroom tile ok then snapped in the wall, the other bent over after only going through plaster when trying to get a screw in to hang a picture (nails obv failed too). I'm keen to hang my guitars in the spare room once it's decorated so they're out of reach of my little one. The wall appears to be plaster and then possibly breeze block, judging by a hole drilled for an extractor fan. The breeze block shreds in to fine grey powder when using professional tools like my father in law's hammer drills. Question is, if I am to hang the guitars do I need a standard masonry drill bit or something stronger? Do I mount the hangers on a long piece of timber and fix that to the wall? What type of screws or fittings should I use in the wall?
21. Bass playing, occasionally BV, small part in arrangements, responsible for recording practices and uploading them on web for everyone to listen through, keeping drummer calm when he doesn't like a song, keeping lead guitarists ego in check, keeping rhythm guitarist on the correct chords, bringing food my wife has made for everyone. Drummer prints set lists Singer in charge of booking gigs Lead guitarist in charge of Facebook page We never actually discussed any of this, it just happened naturally since I joined in April.
22.
So, bass players in covers bands: is it important to you to have some influence over new additions to your setlist (in order to have your tastes reflected in what your band plays) or are you happy to play what you're told to play (whether you like the song or not) just for the pleasure of being in a band?
I joined an established "crowd pleaser" band, knowing most of the songs already and having gigged them or wanted to gig them in previous bands meant I knew what I was getting in to. I have suggested some songs that we do now and I have suggested different arrangements and medleys, etc. I wouldn't mind if some of my suggestions weren't taken on because the band aren't d!cks about it and I don't go too far astray from our overall theme as a band. Our new criteria are, will people sing and or dance along? Even if it's a song they haven't heard since the 80s? Will we enjoy playing it? Gets rid of the obscure and keeps it on the crowd pleaser theme.
