In theory a PJ bass should be everything I want. I loved my P bass, I've enjoyed every J bass I've had. I've not got on with my Warwick PJ, or the Hohner PJ before that. I've made a PJ Bitsa and put DiMarzios in it. The pups sound great individually, but together I've just never found a way to get the sound I want from PJ basses. I think it's just me, maybe my expectations are wrong or its the way I attack the strings.... Anyone else got this quandary?

If that's still there then it's a minimum twenty years old!

I remember when getting a gig at the Indigo was THE aspiration, and dropping them off cassettes of my band when I was 17 / 18. Never did get a gig there... Maybe have to go back all these years later!

Ah Scarbados! I was born and grew up there, moved out twenty years ago and chances to go back get fewer each year. There was always a fantastic music scene there. I've never heard of the Lookout though, where is it?

This stuff looks like it belongs in a server room! I bet there's some serious power and tone from these racks, I remember the SWR with shed loads of knobs being advertised and reviewed in bass mags as THE big thing. I've never had rack gear, and even looking at this I'm just not tempted. I bet it all sounds amazing, but is also heavy and requires a level of technical skill and knowledge I don't want to invest time in learning to put it all together. I don't know if that's typical of most, but that's why I don't have any of it. Now pedal versions of that SWR stuff would very much interested me....

I read your post and two basses stood out: 21st birthday gift and nicest to look at with the best neck. Of the others to acknowledge one is easily replaced and the other is probably worth a shed load of cash. With regards leaving something for your kids they probably want something that was special to you, rather than something you kept in case it had decent sell on value.

It probably will be now though because goods have to be checked etc. in ways they weren't before Brexit when they could move freely in and around EU countries. So it could be slower, more costly, more chance of error in paperwork slowing things down... Especially with second hand goods sent by private individuals.

What are your views on the vinyl s(pl)urge?
uk_lefty replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
My Mrs wanted to buy me a turntable and a few albums for Christmas recently. I said not to bother, I've got hundreds of CDs that I don't have time to listen to, obviously there's YouTube and Amazon Prime music, Spotify, all the streaming services... I don't have the space for this stuff. It's a nice idea, I don't begrudge anyone else having vinyl if that's what they enjoy. I won't be told it's "better" though. I recently got a few tracks on Amazon HD quality and I'm hearing instruments and effects I'd never realised were in songs I was learning to cover. I've then emulated in an approximate way some of those effects and it's given me something extra on some songs. I don't think I'd have got that with vinyl, maybe not even with CD. Oh and I remember buying a 45 for 50p at Our Price records in my youth. Wish I'd kept my REM, Billy Joel and Bryan Adams vinyl now, if anything just as wall art. -
We will be playing pop covers with real energy on Fri 25th Feb at the Hertford Corn Exchange. Find us on social media for photos and video clips, or better still come see us in Hertford.

Being serious now.... They will be absolutely stunning to look at, hold, and to play. I do like a premium Ibanez.

I was joking, no worries 😄

How can they be one of a kind if there's fifty of them??! 🤔
-
If I can get a babysitter I'll gig it next Friday and let you know. So far it feels good. But flats ALWAYS feel good 😉👍

I had Fender tapewounds on mine which sounded great on a P bass but I think it took something away from the JC, it felt like it was holding back. It didn't sound bad by any means, I just think there's more in that pickup and three way switch Getting it back from a proper set up tomorrow with Maruszczyk flats on it and hoping it opens up a little more.

Indeed it does! I've only done one set with mine, and it was string with tapewounds but it was great for pop/ rock stuff. The only reason I didn't use it for the whole set was that I needed to EQ out some really strong volume boosts at some frequencies that I hadn't accounted for.

Active three band Stingray varies from treble just a bit up from centre, mid cut 25% Ish, bass boosted 50% or more. I sometimes boost the mids way up, treble cut a smidge and bass only boosted a tiny amount. Any passive bass is usually everything on full unless I need a more traditional sound then the tone might go halfway back or more. At the moment I try to have two "go to" sounds for each bass that I think of as modern or traditional. Then I got a Jack Casady and there's just so much the three way switch and the tone knob do I'm still experimenting months after buying it.

If it inspires you to play more, play differently, and brings a smile to your face, all without causing financial hardship you've won. Hope it goes well. I've not used them either, would have thought the epoxy fretboard had more influence on the sound, but every detail helps.

Interesting! Can't wait to get it all downloaded and explore. My "new" band does a lot of pop stuff and there's room for synth bass and using the bass to play synth melodies in parts. I invested in a Boss SY1 which is great and I will use a few settings off that, but it doesn't do the fat fuzzy envelope filter type synth sound that I crave. I tried making my own in Helix but it was really hard work and never came out right.

Lots of scams on Facebook and a few BC'ers have been sting by the same well known crook who has a method to this. Pedal is priced too good to be true, your PayPal payment keeps getting bounced until you pay in a way you can't get it back then he blocks you and never replies. All the while the same item is still being advertised for sale and the next victim is taken for their cash. Sad fact is people know his name, where he lives, and have reported it but there doesn't seem to be much action from the authorities.

Yep but your browser will probably send you to the GB version unless you're on a non British connection or vpn
-
What does this word mean??! 😉
-
No, their GB version of the site has it all costed in. So actually, yes, but it's not an extra surprise bill off the courier. What you see is what you pay. I've bought quite a lot off them since Brexit and it's always gone well.

Interesting gizmo. Looks like they saw the 'strip' style effects units and said "nice format, but we can do it better". I won't bin my Helix Stomp for it but I had I seen this first it may have been a difficult decision between the two.
