Where is good to buy/try basses in London?
uk_lefty replied to shoulderpet's topic in General Discussion
Am sure all the others are good but the only one I've bought a bass through is Wunjo and they were superb. Just left me to it with the basses, didn't try to pressure me into the more expensive of the two I preferred... In fact didn't pressure me at all. Gave me a good deal on trade in for an old bass too. Can't speak highly enough of them. -
Try looking on Ann Summers website.

Lovely stuff! What's the fender, that can't be a standard model.

There was a small discount, I'm not sure it was a recommendation. They were absolute turds to me when DPD lost a bass I sent for over a month. APC insure musical instruments but it's pot luck which of their branches will take something the length of a bass in a hard case plus packaging. Some depots do, some don't.

Ah is your white finish a refinish? I saw a red one on eBay for less than six hundred and it went quickly. I like that each year Gibson seem to do a lefty bass, the SG, the Thunderbird and then this. The SG Bass would be my preference but would much prefer it full sized, I'm not keen on short scale basses..... Yet.

What's the junior like? A red one came up on eBay a while back but I know nothing at all about them.

Ah great! It is a fantastic bass. I find it easier to slap than any other bass I've had, even the Hohner B2A. I LOVED using it on 80s covers through a Trace Elliot, but notice your Marshall gear in the photo, you have great taste in bass stuff! It was a lovely bass but my sound right now is all about the Stingray, the PJ Bitsa and Jack Casady are backup to that so really it would have been sat unused in its case, which is a crying shame.

Zero feedback seller... I won't touch it.

I get the "Female drummer" and "Ideally 18-30" kind of ads but..

I get it. If you were a non vegan trying to fake it you'd damage their whole credibility. It would be like Maggie Thatcher singing any Bruce Springsteen song like "the working life", or the Strawbs "part of the Union". -
Glad to hear it has worked for someone. I am well aware that my good run with UPS can't last forever!

Yeah I'd always go direct to the courier. I've had bad experiences with two different intermediaries. I won't bore you with the details but basically you pay them for a service that you may or may not receive and if anything goes wrong they just don't give a sh!t, and to make it worse the courier's won't deal with you, just the intermediary who surprise surprise isn't as keen as you to get things sorted. For saving a few quid it's just not worth it.

UPS have been pretty good for me recently. I've sent Ashdown cabs through them and Hermes in the last three months, both were less than £30

Out: Boss GT10B, EHX Bass Mono Synth, EHX the Mole, fretless Warwick, MIJ Jazz bass 70s style, 80s Aria Pro II SB Elite, Washburn/ Status healdess 4 string, Trace Elliot 2*10 combo, Rootmaster cabs, some guitar multi effects boxes In then out again: Trace Elliot 2*10 combo, Washburn Status headless bass, EHX the Mole bass booster. In and still in: Epiphone Jack Casady, Ashdown Pro Neo cabs, Helix Stomp, AMT Bass Wah, Ashdown full boost pedal. It's been a busy year! One band never got going fully so I folded it, I left my covers band of 5years plus, and joined a new covers band with a different style and a lot more gigs booked.

Its one that if you buy second hand you won't lose your money selling on if you don't like it. I personally didn't get on with it but I know others love it. Trial and error is the way with these things.

belated NBD. 30" scale Retrovibe 50s Precision (P30)

I'm not a fan of short scales generally but I like that. Is it a guitar size body? -
I understand you fully. If my children weren't so small that I could actually have some kind of social life I don't think I'd have been able to watch it all. I'm glad I did, but I won't watch it again.

If you don't have the tools, times space or skill for the major works don't even bother. Having built my own parts bass a year ago what was supposed to be a learning experience and labour of love turned into a torment. I spent far too much and still had to get a pro to finish it off. The finished product is very good and unique but I could have saved a lot of money buying a factory built bass with a guarantee. If you are determined to do it no matter what.... From the parts you've listed out it sounds like you may as well buy a better quality body and neck. Once you've done that you can still have your Squier to play around on while you spend a year trying to source parts, see what you can get second hand and realise that not everything fits together so you'll buy three necks, then change your mind on the body colour.... It can go on a bit!

Well, there's one on Bass Direct for £250 right now and they aren't known for bargain basement pricing.

The nano bass balls has just one sound and it's.... Ok. If that's what you want. The best bargain autowah I know of is the EHX Mini Q Tron. I think you could get one secondhand for about sixty quid and they're really flexible, subtle to ridiculous and loads in between, great for guitar or bass. If an actual wah pedal is your thing I'd recommend the AMT bass wah or the Jim Dunlop cry baby bass.

Songs you always wanted to play but never did...
uk_lefty replied to uk_lefty's topic in General Discussion
I did an acoustic version of "she is a model" a long time ago. It went as badly as you can imagine -
I used one in a music shop when they first came about. The main gimmick being the onboard effects. Unfortunately those effects were almost completely unusable. The speaker and general sound wasn't impressive either. But for just having something to make a bass louder you could do worse at that price.

I think this kind of documentary puts a new perspective on him and the others though. To me he comes out of this with a lot more credit.

How times change.... Back in May I thought I'd never use the sub harmonics ever again. Now I'm in a different band and its central to the sound of one of the songs we play. I even tried to play around with the octaver in my Helix to replace it and I can't. So now there's a song in my set that starts with a dusty end bass riff (no other instrumentation) with the Ashdown sub on full. We loved the sound in rehearsal so took it to the stage. I think people were actually scared. It was heavy!!!

Off the topic of what a curious place Kingston upon Hull is, that is a superb bass. Love it.
