Its one that if you buy second hand you won't lose your money selling on if you don't like it. I personally didn't get on with it but I know others love it. Trial and error is the way with these things.

belated NBD. 30" scale Retrovibe 50s Precision (P30)
uk_lefty replied to Paul S's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm not a fan of short scales generally but I like that. Is it a guitar size body? -
I understand you fully. If my children weren't so small that I could actually have some kind of social life I don't think I'd have been able to watch it all. I'm glad I did, but I won't watch it again.

If you don't have the tools, times space or skill for the major works don't even bother. Having built my own parts bass a year ago what was supposed to be a learning experience and labour of love turned into a torment. I spent far too much and still had to get a pro to finish it off. The finished product is very good and unique but I could have saved a lot of money buying a factory built bass with a guarantee. If you are determined to do it no matter what.... From the parts you've listed out it sounds like you may as well buy a better quality body and neck. Once you've done that you can still have your Squier to play around on while you spend a year trying to source parts, see what you can get second hand and realise that not everything fits together so you'll buy three necks, then change your mind on the body colour.... It can go on a bit!

Well, there's one on Bass Direct for £250 right now and they aren't known for bargain basement pricing.

The nano bass balls has just one sound and it's.... Ok. If that's what you want. The best bargain autowah I know of is the EHX Mini Q Tron. I think you could get one secondhand for about sixty quid and they're really flexible, subtle to ridiculous and loads in between, great for guitar or bass. If an actual wah pedal is your thing I'd recommend the AMT bass wah or the Jim Dunlop cry baby bass.

Songs you always wanted to play but never did...
uk_lefty replied to uk_lefty's topic in General Discussion
I did an acoustic version of "she is a model" a long time ago. It went as badly as you can imagine -
I used one in a music shop when they first came about. The main gimmick being the onboard effects. Unfortunately those effects were almost completely unusable. The speaker and general sound wasn't impressive either. But for just having something to make a bass louder you could do worse at that price.

I think this kind of documentary puts a new perspective on him and the others though. To me he comes out of this with a lot more credit.

How times change.... Back in May I thought I'd never use the sub harmonics ever again. Now I'm in a different band and its central to the sound of one of the songs we play. I even tried to play around with the octaver in my Helix to replace it and I can't. So now there's a song in my set that starts with a dusty end bass riff (no other instrumentation) with the Ashdown sub on full. We loved the sound in rehearsal so took it to the stage. I think people were actually scared. It was heavy!!!

Off the topic of what a curious place Kingston upon Hull is, that is a superb bass. Love it.

Fair comment, apologies

Experts talking cr@p.... Where to start with that. I won't bother. Lucky all this covid stuff is just a hoax isn't it? And you taking your own chances is fine but you're actually risking other people's health too, is that fine? Just because you're not bothered?

Imagine the programme Shameless but without the jokes. And more heroin.

Ta. I had one day of hell and a few rough days but coming out of it now though. Have still had to cancel all family visits and almost everything we were looking forward to this Christmas, but luckily the kids aren't sick so that's the main thing.

But there's a lot more of it about and therefore more chance of catching it. And having got it myself right now I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Sounds standard for Hull.

There's a few UK places doing Japanese fenders now, Gas Station Guitars and Bass Bros being the ones I can think of. But they all want £1000 for anything Fender Japan, which seems too high to me for what they are. I've even seen some MIJ Jazzes with very dodgy modifications go up for over a grand and get sold quickly. I remember when you could buy one new, imported for less than £600! It wasn't too long ago!

Any fuzz pedal going into any wah pedal? I use my Helix going into an AMT bass wah.

Just bought an SY1 on fleabay to see if it has a place in my pop-goes-rock band that I recently joined.... Let's find out!

I've never really had this. Like my music collection I like lots of different stuff but don't go all-in on one particular genre/ style/ band/ era. Same with bass sounds. For my 80s band my Washburn/ Status through a Trace Elliot was the sound I wanted. In the pop-goes-rock covers band I'm in its Stingray>Helix>Ashdown. Before last week's gig I took out my backup bass, a passive PJ, to give it a spin and used the practice room's Orange amp, an amp that sounds terrible with my Stingray. It sounded great, a different tone to my usual but it was still "me". Even if I went for honky bridge pickup sounds I think it would still be me. I think my sound comes from how I attack the string, how long I hold a note for, how and where I play fills, the fact I don't do extreme EQ, it's flat then a few little tweaks to either scoop the mids or boost the mids. But it still sounds like me. Been thinking a lot about this before posting and have listened back to myself recording with different gear in different bands. I think most bassists would hear that it's the same bass player. Not saying I'm special and unique and amazing, very very far from it, I've just got my way of doing it and it shows through no matter what gear. Still doesn't stop me constantly trading in and upgrading gear though!

Sell it on eBay... "Never been gigged"
-
It's a tough one. We had tickets for a gig that got scuppered by the pandemic, then for the rescheduled gig family circumstances had changed (eldest started school) so we couldn't get away for the weekend. Then moving the tickets on was really difficult to stop people scamming and counterfeiting, but also stops ordinary people being able to easily get their money back.... So there were two empty, but paid for, spaces at that gig minimum. I played a music venue on Fri night, first gig with the new band. Capacity around 150. I really didn't know of people would be out for their "last night of freedom" or if they'd stay away from a sweaty, cramped music venue in fear of the new virus strain. It turned out to be packed, luckily, but it was free entry!
