Also taking this advice having never got hold of anything by Tool before. Listening to first album track. First things that hit me.... how "natural" the vocal is, for want of a better word. It's imperfect but not tuneless, it just has character that fits perfectly. Then, something I don't think I've ever said before.... The mix! There's space to let each instrument breathe. There's no washy synth filling sonic gaps, but the gaps are part of the whole thing. I'm enjoying this. I also like the Mars Volta and Karnivool but am not a "fan" as such, I just have one album of each that I really like. I think Tool needs much further exploration from me. How has this taken me so long?!

They use his name a lot talking about the EQ tuning of the Meters headphones. Maybe he really knows his stuff on frequencies and all sorts of important muso stuff that doesn't involve shredding on the bass? I dunno. I'm no U2 fan but fair play to him. I'm sure they could have booted him out at any moment they wanted if he was truly useless.

I can't remember if it was NUX that were the same thing, but the Hartke pedals were really, really good. They did an excellent bass chorus. I preferred it over the Eden and Boss bass choruses I tried before and since. I don't think they make them anymore though.

Thanks! I'll give it a go tomorrow. I find the online videos frustrating. They never seem to show in enough detail or they make things look ridiculously easy or are edited to miss the action. They also never seem to cover things that could go wrong. I need to get time in with someone patient who will show me, hands on, with my basses. It could save me a fortune in basic setups. I don't think I'll ever have the confidence for fret levelling though!

While I've not checked it I think it unlikely. It's a bitsa bass that I had a Luthier finish off and set up in full for me early in the year. Likely to just be the neck..... I hope.

A mixed review then! I'm usually quite picky with my strings but it's an expensive month and I want a full setup doing on the bass so plumped for a set of these. They won't be on my main bass so hoping I get good longevity from them. I've done quite well with "value" strings recently so fingers crossed the Maruszczyk flats sound good on a Jack Casady that gets used infrequently

I've got fret buzz at frets 1-3 on each string. It's a Fender neck, easy to get to the rod adjuster. I've just put lighter strings on.... I've tried adjusting the neck (left handed bass, stood it on the floor front facing away from me, Allen key in and tried to twist to my right, towards the G string.... Very hard to get a very small amount of movement) but no luck. I'm not keen on trying to force the rod. Any advice gratefully received.

Has anyone used them? Noticed bass direct had their flats in at £22 a set, thought they could be worth a punt...?

There were some good cheap pedals branded Daphon, the Chord branded ones around now look the same. Their bass compressor was really good as a basic unit, had one around 2008. I think I paid £15 for it, full metal casing, good amount of squeeze on the sound of you dialled it up. I like the Caline pedal power bank thingies too, had a couple which have never let me down. Also Harley Benton do their own flat angle cables for connecting pedals that cost peanuts and just do the job. Donner do a good rip off of the pedal train too, fraction of the cost, maybe the bag is a bit cheaper, but it's decent.

Whatever you decide to do, change up your existing basses or buy a P I'd say now is not a good time to sell off basses second hand. Either trade or save up.
