  1. I used one in a music shop when they first came about. The main gimmick being the onboard effects. Unfortunately those effects were almost completely unusable. The speaker and general sound wasn't impressive either. But for just having something to make a bass louder you could do worse at that price.
  2. I think this kind of documentary puts a new perspective on him and the others though. To me he comes out of this with a lot more credit.
  3. How times change.... Back in May I thought I'd never use the sub harmonics ever again. Now I'm in a different band and its central to the sound of one of the songs we play. I even tried to play around with the octaver in my Helix to replace it and I can't. So now there's a song in my set that starts with a dusty end bass riff (no other instrumentation) with the Ashdown sub on full. We loved the sound in rehearsal so took it to the stage. I think people were actually scared. It was heavy!!!
  4. Off the topic of what a curious place Kingston upon Hull is, that is a superb bass. Love it.
  5. Have oft considered buying the cheaper Ray34 and getting this done...! Very interested
  6. Fair comment, apologies
  7. Experts talking cr@p.... Where to start with that. I won't bother. Lucky all this covid stuff is just a hoax isn't it? And you taking your own chances is fine but you're actually risking other people's health too, is that fine? Just because you're not bothered?
  8. Imagine the programme Shameless but without the jokes. And more heroin.
  9. Ta. I had one day of hell and a few rough days but coming out of it now though. Have still had to cancel all family visits and almost everything we were looking forward to this Christmas, but luckily the kids aren't sick so that's the main thing.
  10. But there's a lot more of it about and therefore more chance of catching it. And having got it myself right now I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
  11. Sounds standard for Hull.
  12. There's a few UK places doing Japanese fenders now, Gas Station Guitars and Bass Bros being the ones I can think of. But they all want £1000 for anything Fender Japan, which seems too high to me for what they are. I've even seen some MIJ Jazzes with very dodgy modifications go up for over a grand and get sold quickly. I remember when you could buy one new, imported for less than £600! It wasn't too long ago!
  13. Any fuzz pedal going into any wah pedal? I use my Helix going into an AMT bass wah.
  14. Just bought an SY1 on fleabay to see if it has a place in my pop-goes-rock band that I recently joined.... Let's find out!
  15. I've never really had this. Like my music collection I like lots of different stuff but don't go all-in on one particular genre/ style/ band/ era. Same with bass sounds. For my 80s band my Washburn/ Status through a Trace Elliot was the sound I wanted. In the pop-goes-rock covers band I'm in its Stingray>Helix>Ashdown. Before last week's gig I took out my backup bass, a passive PJ, to give it a spin and used the practice room's Orange amp, an amp that sounds terrible with my Stingray. It sounded great, a different tone to my usual but it was still "me". Even if I went for honky bridge pickup sounds I think it would still be me. I think my sound comes from how I attack the string, how long I hold a note for, how and where I play fills, the fact I don't do extreme EQ, it's flat then a few little tweaks to either scoop the mids or boost the mids. But it still sounds like me. Been thinking a lot about this before posting and have listened back to myself recording with different gear in different bands. I think most bassists would hear that it's the same bass player. Not saying I'm special and unique and amazing, very very far from it, I've just got my way of doing it and it shows through no matter what gear. Still doesn't stop me constantly trading in and upgrading gear though!
  16. Sell it on eBay... "Never been gigged"
  17. It's a tough one. We had tickets for a gig that got scuppered by the pandemic, then for the rescheduled gig family circumstances had changed (eldest started school) so we couldn't get away for the weekend. Then moving the tickets on was really difficult to stop people scamming and counterfeiting, but also stops ordinary people being able to easily get their money back.... So there were two empty, but paid for, spaces at that gig minimum. I played a music venue on Fri night, first gig with the new band. Capacity around 150. I really didn't know of people would be out for their "last night of freedom" or if they'd stay away from a sweaty, cramped music venue in fear of the new virus strain. It turned out to be packed, luckily, but it was free entry!
  18. Yeah I don't get the power ratings, it restricts you to 600w or lower heads. Means I didn't grab one of those bargain RM800s sadly.
  19. We had full PA support so I didn't really need to push it but the volume is there in spades, definitely, I use the Rootmaster 500 head. I've not used the ABM Pro Neo 2x10s either so can't compare exactly. What I can compare it to is the Rootmaster series cabs. I personally prefer the sound of 15s, it's deeper and rounder sounding to me than the 2x10s which can do the punchiness well and high end but I feel low miss and deep lows are lacking a bit of authority. The Rootmaster cabs are excellent value for money but I just feel there's more to the sound with the ABMs. This is of course my view based on me playing my stuff through my guitars, effects, etc. So others may get completely different results.
  20. Gigged my ABM Pro Neo 1x15s on Friday night for the very first time. Powerful and authoritative sound indeed. Also easy to lift down a narrow passage over the top of my car to squeeze into the venue. Even had a punter stand behind the PA speaker in a little space where he was getting smashed in the chest by my bass rig.... He enjoyed the Ashdown sound (but also wanted to talk to me about it in between songs, which is nice but not practical. If you're reading this we can catch up another time).
  21. There was an Acoustic amp and cabs advertised on Facebook last week for about £650, I don't know much about these but I thought it seemed like a great deal
  22. Played my first gig with a "new" band last night... New in that I joined at the end of October but they've been going over ten years. Absolute belter. Made plenty of little fumbles at the start but no songs fell apart. Played one of their biggest gigs first off, great experience this time of year with people out in party mood and knocking out a few Xmas songs. More practice to do, next gig is 7th January!! But people were out in force last night to enjoy live music, it was a great experience.
  23. I think that paragraph there sums up the skillset and attitude 99% of bands want from a bassist but not many always get. Use that when you enquire with other bands and you'll be top of their list of people to audition: hard working, aware of own limitations, knows his role. Sounds like the ideal bandmate to me.
  24. I saw this on their Facebook today and am tempted to make an enquiry. I don't need it, it probably wouldn't work so well with my band, but it's so tempting. What sort of lead times are people getting from order to UK delivery?
