1. Sorry if this is meandering off topic, but the weight/ergonomics thing bugs me. For example, I had a Lowdown 150 which was a fantastic combo for small gigs, but because of a single stuck-on top handle, was a cow to carry. It wasn't light (48 pounds) but if some thought had gone in to how it could be handled, it might have been easier to lug. My Eden D115 cab is 60 pounds but I can grab it with both (recessed) side handles and get it in and out of the car with ease. So, manufacturers of beefy-but-bijou combo's TAKE NOTE. Rant over. I feel better for that.
2.
Hoping to have my Spector Euro 5LX with me c/w newly installed ACG02 preamp if anyone's interested in trying it. I've got spare seats in my motor if anyone wants a lift. My route will be along the A59 from Preston all the way to Harrogate - I don't mind a small deviation from the route to pick someone up but no piss takers please .
I'm SO looking forward to trying out your new pre-amp Al. I'm falling in love again with my Euro (I hadn't fallen out with it, just not used it for a while as I'm busier with my other band that i use my BB415 for) but I do find the range of sounds from the Spector somewhat limited.
3. If this isn't snapped up by a week on Sunday, you can try it out at the Bash.
4.
Is there anybody whole be able to give me a lift? I expressed an interest earlier on in the thread. I live in Burley in Leeds, if anyone's passing close by. What's this stickery crazyness?
If no lift transpires, the venue is less than 5 minutes walk from Hornbeam Park rail station, which is on the line to Leeds via Burley Park. Hope you make it!
5. Sweet. Does it get loud enough for rehearsing with a drummer? What does it weigh?
6. One more string, and one less nought and it'd be mine. MINE I TELL YOU!
7. The buyer (of this morning) has had to reluctantly pull out. So, it's back up again!
8. I'm picking up a used Indie six string bass on Saturday. I'd be interested in anyone's experience of owning/modifying one.
9.
If you've created a greater area of contact where the string goes over the saddle Al then you may be damping the string. Even a small change can do this. String wise I can't suggest a solution unless you drop a gauge. I find Ernie Ball's underrated but string choice is very personal.
When I bought my Euro LX5, the shop's guitar tech fitted it with a new set of Ernie Balls. I got them to throw new strings in to sweeten the deal. Grudgingly, I have to admit that they play great, and the low B is crystal clear. Not sure of the guage though.
10. Security is a good point. Yes, the venue is tucked away, so passers bye are unlikely. Yes, there are members of the snooker club around within the building, but I dare say they'd give our room a wide berth. Yes stickers will help to identify legitimate visitors (thanks Yorks5stringer ...how many stickers have you got up to now?). And I'm in the same boat as you all ...got gear there and don't want it nicked. For the Jim Fleeting talk, we may have to walk to another room BUT I will have family members pressganged in to guarding the hall that we are in, whilst that's on. BTW the venue owner is keen to ensure that noise levels aren't so high as to upset the neighbours. Mind you, they do have gigs and discos regularly. Mind you, if it gets very loud it is not going to be healthy or enjoyable. As for being near anywhere. It is near a park (but it's winter). Harrogate's very nice central shopping district is a good mile away. Personally, I recommend the Turkish Baths!
11. I have a set of Olympia flats that I've tried on two of my fivers, and the B always sounds dull and woody. Most likely the string?
12. Sounds nasty. Hope it doesn't hurt for too long, Nick. Good job it wasn't an eye op ...he could have double vision and think he's got 134 bass guitars!
13. To cheer us snow-bound bikers up, how about doing a review of a bass ...as if it were a bike (or vice versa)?
14.
Is the body on these curved, it looks it in some of the photos? Any idea what the body woods are (assuming it is a flamey cap)? Cheers Jules
Yes, it's curvelicious, as is the Spector way In 1976 Spector and some co-op friends visited a cabinet shop where the woodworking machinery was being sold off. "The guy was moving on to something else. He had an assistant named Ned Steinberger; Ned moved into our place, where he was designing and building furniture. He became fascinated with the idea that we were nutty enough to make musical instruments, and he said, ‘Hey, I think I could design a bass guitar.’ I said, ‘Great—be my guest.’ He came back a week later with the first version of the NS carved-body bass, which we’re still making to this day." • Original NS curved carved body style • Figured maple top, solid basswood body • 1 piece Solid maple neck, Rosewood Fingerboard with angled back headstock for better tone and string tension The above taken from The Spector website
15. I bought this as a stage spare but recently put some new wirewounds on and set it up and got a good shock when I found it did the best imitation off JJ Burnell's sound that I've ever got. However, I've just done a deal on a six string and I need the cash. It's passive, EMG's, 35" & Black Cherry. It's as good as new, except I caused a slight scratch behind the bridge when changing a string. I'm asking £200 + postage
16.
I have a Jap Fender Jazz Bass Special Fretless (MightyMite Ebanol neck, Deep Talkin' flats). It has the original passive Jazz bridge pup and a P-bass pup. It's a lovely bass but I played a set with it a couple of weeks ago and it sounds thin and weedy and uninspiring, next to my Warwick Corvette $$ anyway. I want the sound to be richer and deeper with higher output, more like my Corvette. I will be using it for modern funk and dub tones so I need rich deep lows and perhaps a bit of growl. Would the Stellartone option work? I am doubtful as I have never heard one. Should I change the pups, if so, what would you recommend? I don't mind going active, or passive/active like the Corvette. They need to be standard Fender size and the same format, ie. J P. Any help would be very greatfully received. I have read lots of stuff on the www but haven't come up with a trustworthy solution. Cheers all.
Having been through a similar situation, I'd say a hotter pup will help but it won't transform. For real change, a pre-amp will be needed. I fitted a John East Retro to my Fender Jap Jazz fretless, and it instantly gave me a new range of sounds.
17. 1973. My mate Nigel Townsend, got an electric guitar, played through a Woolies (wall of sound) amp, and got me to play bass on his acoustic, so I saved up for a bass. I got a Kay 'SG'. Thin bodied, sunburst, and probably short scale. £20 new, from Norman Hackett's in Reading (where I believe Bryan Adams also got his first six string). Rode home to Woodley with it on my back, on my Raleigh Runabout moped, which was a bit naughty, as I was 15 and not yet legal on the road.
18. I bought John's Schroeder 1210R. So easy, he even delivered it himself. Well recommended!
19.
i know, i dont really get it. theyre amazing guitars and pretty hard to find. does anyone know whats up with this?
I've never tried one, but this one on eBay looks lovely!
20. He's a man, with a plan, and not a single counterfeit dollar in his hand. He's Mysthe Wonderful!
21. Alert. This guy charmed me in to me letting go of both my Bergantino cabs, when I was really only trying to sell one. He distracted me with his headless Sei Six. He's so damned decent, and good to deal with, he might do the same to you. You have been warned!
22. I had one from new, but sold it last year (to Poland via ebay). Awesome cab which I thought I'd have for ever. Because of the slant back & wheels, it wasn't as cumbersome as you might think. A change in the bands transport arrangements meant it was better to downsize in the end, though. I sold mine for £600, so this one's a bargain.
23.
Very nice ... if ONLY it was unlined ....
I like it lined, my 'if only' is 'if only it was half the price'.
24. Damn nice
25.
The Little Torzal twist is the best solution because it tilts the body up towards you, but the twist keeps the neck at more friendly angle. If you can live with the whole bass tilted and it's not putting a strain on your left wrist you should also look at the Norton Basses which allow you to tilt the whole neck and body centre in relation to the wings.
Well, I'll go to me granny's and back! Innovation is still alive in bass guitar design. I'm finding out some interesting things here. Thanks for that, BigRedX, but the chance of me getting to try before I buy are somewhat slim. But you never know!
