Go to London. It's a no brainer. It's where there's enough going on for you to find something. I realised that at the age of 25, living in Reading. I then spent seven years in central London building up my non-bass career, before escaping to Yorkshire. That formative, self-sacrificing period cannot be easily re-visited. So go starve for your art in town, but view it as a necessary move that doesn't have to be permanent if you don't want it to be.
Cheers mate. Nice looker but I'm strictly a 4 string and I'm after NT basses rather than BO. Thanks for taking the time though.
Oddly enough I 'am' in the market for a Spector and I've heard of a couple of ex-Soundcontrol/REVERB Spectors available but none in a finish that makes me want to part with my money. I have been communicating with Darren at the Bass Merchant re. an amber model that he has in but the thought of further clear outs/price cuts on Spector basses (added to the couple of very cheap ex SC basses and the perceived second hand value of the Spectors after the last sell off) means that I'm not prepared to throw anywhere near retail price money at a 'new' model! So if anyone sees a purdy amber/orange number let me know and there'll be a nice Christmas bonus in it for ya! need help choosing a 5 strings bass similar to warwick.
Born 2B Mild replied to saibuster's topic in Bass Guitars
Maybe a Spector Legend? Used, might be within budget. Here's a new one On eBay -
I did consider it, but then I changed my mind for that reason (Sorry, Steve). I need height, dammit!
Ever thought of using a flight case? Not only useful for protection; with casters, a flight case will make it easy to move the cab about. But best of all, you can stick the cab on top of it, on stage, for getting that ear-level monitoring. More so, if F.O.H. is delivering most of the bottom end.

Personally, I find listing bass players by gender as pointless as doing it by hair colour, but as she doesn't seemed to have been given a mention so far, here's to Aimee Mann. Her 'Whatever' album is one of my faves of the 90s.
It would be good to have someone really knowlegable do a little talk on something..... how about dragging Jim Fleeting along perhaps? plus obligatory Raffle of course....
The JimMeister has been invited and is indeed intending to come. He may well be coerced to spout wisdom too. Can you contact Jon and lure him to bring somer Shukers too, Keith? -
Sounds interesting, but never been to one of these does before. What's the "form"?
At its most basic, some folk will bring their rigs, FX and basses, others will come just to look and maybe have a go. If anyone 'in the trade' wants to exhibit, do set-ups, etc. they are welcome, by prior arrangement. It's all free, except the bar. Suggestions for making the day more interesting, are also welcomed. -
I'm a recent convert too. I'll still use r/w for rock/funk gigs, but flats are great for playing quiet stuff ...especially with a subtle tremelo effect!
I don't mind. Sounds good though. How far away would it be from the train station?
c.8 walk from Hornbeam Park. If carrying gear, I dare say someone will give you a lift, but we can sort that out nearer the time. I hope you make it! -
Something strange and unexpected has happened....

As I have the time to do this, and following some encouragement from jake_tenfloors and Yorks5stringer, I am going ahead with sorting out a Yorkshire Bass Bash for February. I have found a good venue in Harrogate. It is a snooker club which has an adjoining events hall. It has a bar, sandwiches, plenty of free parking, no stairs, and we can have it for free on Sundays, noon to 5pm. That's on the understanding that we leave it as we find it and he does some business over the bar (BigBeefChief – that’s your job). The room itself is large and square. It is carpeted except for the wooden dance floor and stage. Gigs are held there. Tables and chairs can be put out whilst rigs can be set up around the edges. So, the only thing to do is to agree a date. Please do the old poll thing above.
Evenin' all! I've got my eye on something, so I'm asking £625 shipped in the UK I forgot to mention that a little bit of the rhino covering has come off the bottom of the cab. It's totally cosmetic, and non-visible during normal use. and Jorg Schroeder is sending me a pot to touch it up. Of course I'll forward it on to the buyer.
Seems a bargain. If only you had your eyes on my Bergo's

The guy wasn't in today, so I'll try tomorrow. We've been a bit snowed up here, so that might be why.

After a new 5 string, any recommendations?
Born 2B Mild replied to Sarah5string's topic in Bass Guitars
Given your favoured genre of music, I'd say an active would be good. If you can buy used, you'll get a pretty nifty axe for your money. -
After a new 5 string, any recommendations?
Born 2B Mild replied to Sarah5string's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm looking to buy another 5 string. Currently I'm leaning towards the Ibanez BTB 305fm but have yet to go properly guitar shopping and play a few, so just looking for a few recommendations. What I'm after, 5 string Fretted Preferably Active or at least active preamp I pick, never slap or pop. Occasional fingerstyle. I play rock/metal. I like a warm, soft and mellow tone and have a dislike of treble. lol Something that looks cool and original but not OTT I don't like P-basses or Jazz basses. Fanks
So what's your budget? -
Were you thinking of organising it soon?
I'll be reporting on venue/dates within a few days. Late Jan/early Feb is what I'm thinking. Gives you a chance to get used to what Santa's brought you
+1 for Leeds. Although as long as I can get a train to wherever it is, that'll be fine.
Trains come to Harrogate from Leeds in one direction and York in the other. So, you won't be bringing your 1x18 bin then?
Nothing better than a room full of bass nerds
I went to the venue I'm thinking of for this bash, but the guy I need to speak to wasn't in. I did find myself explaining things to another member of staff, and feeling a bit nerdish. Kind of world on warcraft swaps fair'ish!!!

For (too) many years, I have stuck to roundwounds, and no doubt will continue to carry on using them for my rock & funk playing. However, I'm loving the flats I put on my spare bass recently. Not only the sound, but also the silky smoothness of the feel. Just right for some of the retro blues stuff I'm jamming with some mates right now. I came across in this forum someone liking Nylon Tape Wound Bass Strings. How do these compare in sound and feel to flats, or are they very similar?
I was thinking (have passed this past Dave Ryan's nose as well) of a clinic at Electro Music in Doncaster in the new year. Where we don't just show off our gear & chat, but we get to share experiences & technical knowhow with no pressure from "known" celeb players or anything. How does that sound? Rich.
I think that's a good idea OutToPlay, and could be done in parrallel with the proposed Harrogate bash, as a different flavour convention. I'm a fan/customer of Dave & Electro, but the shop itself has hardly any room for its own gear, let alone what folk might want to bring, plus it seems to be open on both Saturdays and Sundays. And parking is non-existant!!! I visualise a large room, or set of rooms, where between 10 to 20 BC'ers will come and try out each other's gear. I have a venue in mind which suits this, hasn't got stairs, has good parking and has a bar, with sandwiches available. I am going to speak to the venue concerned, though even after haggling, there may be a hire charge. However, we can probably have a raffle or bucket to cover this. I shall report back!
