He's a monster player. He's still with Roscoe basses and has a signature with Bart pick ups. He did a master class with the yellow jackets last year at my uni, was great to sit down in a room with them all & talk about all things music. He's a really sound guy!
in the verse i thought the guitarist is implying a C#m7b5. Maybe im wrong, in which case il do my own cover and use that
Both guitarist & keys player are playing the Em7 in the verse & dropping the 7th to a major 6th, creating a Em7add6.
Absolutely loved that. Brilliant playing all round, and what a voice! Going on my iPod for sure...
Cheers mate
i being very nit picky here but i think you could emphasise the chord change in the verse more. It sounded like a C(sharp)m7b5? I think you were playing the G but it could have done with ringing out IMO. Also i would have played a little lead up to it just to give it more oomph (words have lost me today). And also a little lick back to the E. Finally get your vocalist on some shakers! haha
Not entirely sure which bit your talking about bud But in terms of playing more from my part, it's the first time i've played a double bass for about 3 months with no rehearsal or practice before hand, wasn't technically prepared for doing more than i did
Yep..... Great stuff all round dude. Garry
Aha I ment live, not love. Thanks guys
I loved that. It wasn't about showing off your chops, which was surprising - in a good way. But what was I was really surprised by was how considered and sheer bloody MUSICAL it was - hell, at the risk of sounding incredibly patroninsing, I'd even use the word 'mature'. And I mean 'mature' in a way that quite a few people who've been playing a damn sight longer than you guys could only dream of. Fresh, thoughtful and different, I'm looking forward to hearing more - thank you.
No mate, thank you, it's great to hear such nice feedback, we may look young but we've all been playing for about 10-12 years each so are well practised & all at music college.
Thought the track was quality mate... REALLY good infact. However, you've asked for all comments and feedback and I'm not going to repeat the good bits again, despite agreeing with them fully. I would say however, your singer totally spoils it for me. Not the singing, but the unprofessional attitude she appears to have. Using her phone (even if it is for lyrics) makes it look like she's not interested (and she should know the lyrics, you guys all know the music!) and then during the guitar solo, she's stood with her hands in her pockets looking bored out of her mind. There's probably a story that fully justifies this but it doesnt come across in the video. Whilst the music is great, seeing that (as a potential client) would put me RIGHT off booking your band for a wedding. If she can be that uninterested and ill-prepared when making a video in the studio with her band, she isnt going to give a sh!t about making the client's day special.
Thanks for the comments mate. It was a bit of a last minute recording, had some time at the end of a pre paid session so thought we'd try get the most from it. I totally can see where you're coming from though, but it is a studio session and not a love show. She's not like that live. But she'll see all this and I'm sure she'll take on board the comments. Also if you check the other video I posted today (Mercy) there's a lot more from her in it. She wasn't totally sure on form for this one as we play it differently quite alot so there's alot of visual ques.

Slap, for people who don't like slap.
JakeBrownBass replied to Beer of the Bass's topic in Theory and Technique
Practice slowly with a metronome. So many bass players play out of time when playing slap because they're concentrating more on technique than timing, feel & tone. -
Not happy with my recorded sound. Advice needed.
JakeBrownBass replied to Bilbo's topic in Recording
When you get some new strings & re-record it Bilbo, send it this way, I love this tune & would really enjoy mixing it! Jake -
OK....I was in "grumpy old man" mode this morning when I clicked on the vid...... 3 seconds in and I'd already written it off as pesky young kids about to murder a Stevie Wonder tune....I mean look at her texting on her phone...pah! 9 seconds in....quite like the guitar riff...a bit different..... 20 seconds and the groove had started......ooh! 27 seconds its all coming together....nice voice.......ah the penny drops......shes not texting....its the lyrics...doh! Nice chilled groove, you can hear everything and its all fitting nicely together, lots going on idividually but no-one overpowering. After listening to it for the 6th or 7th time (I guess I must have liked it! ) "grumpy old man" had reteated and "chilled old man" is now trying to find a way to be able to download this to his [s]gramophone [/s]...er iPod. Nice one.
Aha cheers mate. I'll stick it up on soundcloud tomorrow with a download link for anyone that wants its.
That sounds like a Drum kit to me ( or at least Bass drum snare & Tamborine ) whats the story there?
Cajun with 2 mics, one on the front & one underneath. Then a condenser picking up the tambourine being played with his right foot, just out of view because of the bass.
Can't really hear the bass as I'm on my laptop at the moment and the speakers suck, but what a voice on your singer!
She's great isn't she
-
I started clapping at the end of that - right here in my room by myself. That was beautiful!
Wow thanks man, comments like that really mean a lot

Anyone Played IN A Big Band Before ?
JakeBrownBass replied to MusicLover20015's topic in General Discussion
When you say big band, i'm assuming your talking about a Jazz/Swing big band as appose to a large band? Every big band i've played in has had dots & then chord charts for walking lines. It's hard work getting everything to work together if you don't have a page in front of you. -
The way I've tought others to read is as follows, this is after learning the basics (notes on the the stage, key signatures, rhythms, notation symbols) Put a real book in front of you on page one, set a metronome at a slow tempo, read that page, as soon as you make a mistake turn to the next page. Even if it's in the first bar, change the page. What you'll begin to notice is that you get further & further through the page until you can finish the piece. The next step is picking up the tempo. Doing it this way, your not memorising parts as you go along, your looking at key signatures straight away & your actually sight reading. Learning things in sections really means your not sgiht reading anymore and your mind is using more memory than you think.

Do you have an example of the chord chart that you could post so we can give you some more detailed help. Developing melodic ideas from a chord chart is a pretty simple process at its basic level if you know your theory behind it. You can create a nice simple groove with your Root, 3rd, 5th & octave. With these 3 notes your able to transfer it to all the chords in the piece if needs be.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.
