No guitarist for new year, any ideas, any synth pedals
JakeBrownBass replied to mikhay77's topic in General Discussion
Didn't boss (or somebody) do a 'bassmaker' pedal - you've got to play the smaller, less good guitar and the pedal will generate a low note in response to your harmony line.
There was an Able BassMaker pedal made by a guy in Wales. Surely there is someone around that can Dep on either bass or guitar if its a standard pub set which i presume it is for NYE? -

Best Tablet For Music Sheets ?
JakeBrownBass replied to MusicLover20015's topic in General Discussion
I know you don't want to hear it but iPad2 all the way for me man. I've got over 4000 sheets on it, battery life is top notch, especially as you don't need the screen brightness that high. I've had it since may & it's not let me down yet. iRealB is great for it again. -
I'd suggest going back to the start of basic music theory. A chord progression can be explained simply in Roman Numerals. Common progressions in a major key for example are I-IV-V, ii-V-I, I-IV-vi-V. Capitals are major, lower case are minor. In a major key, the I is the tonic, IV subdominant & V dominant. You should be able to recognise this instantly from listening to music. These can then apply to any key, for example if you were in Cmaj, C-F-G, Dm-G-C, C-F-Am-D Things then start getting more interesting by use of inversions & borrowed chords from the parallel minor key, but until you have the basic understanding under your belt, it's going to go over your head. This is pretty basic stuff so i'd suggest to sit down and learn some proper theory as appose to 'sort of understanding' whats happening. Theres a good website here, http://www.teoria.com/

Hey guys, Putting this up for trade as i've never really played it & its just sitting around the house. It really needs new strings and a bit of tlc as its not in the best of condition. It was hand built in Sussex in 1974. It was my uncles & he passed it down to me. I'm not entirely sure what sort of value it has so its for trade only, interested in pretty much anything. Can anyone recommend me some headphones? :)
JakeBrownBass replied to Ben Jamin's topic in Accessories and Misc
I'm a big fan of the Beats by Dre Studio headphones but i've never tried to use them live, i'd always feel a bit of a idiot using over ears when on stage. Sorry, not much use -
This EBS stuff is on my list of buys. Just not sure to go for 2 x Classic 110 or 2 x Classic 112.
I was initially going to go for two 110's but they only had one in stock so went for one of each. Im pretty happy I did actually, they sound really good together and are both great on their own so if your really tight on space, the extra inch on the 110 can make a difference!!

Had an awesome weekend of gigging. Used my EBS Reidmar with just a single 1x10 for both shows and it sounded fantastic with no pa support. Happy days
Mate, wasn't in there overnight, not that dumb! I was just loading in for a gig, left the car for 2 minutes to run up and lock my flat! Admittedly the car was unlocked, that is dumb. Had a PA etc in there so didn't even notice until we unloaded at the other end!!!
You left your car unlocked with your basses in it? Are you sure your insurance is going to cover that....
This is also assuming that songs become popular based purely on their musical merit...
It also doesn't take into account how much financial backing songs in the top 10 get with promotion to drive sales... Not worthy of a news story IMO.
I'm playing octaves that for the most part follow the guitar chord progression. However, I am playing an F# when he plays an Eb minor chord. Our guitarist says this is not musically correct. Is he right? Here is the chord progression with bass octaves next to it: Guitar Bass C# C# octave (2 bars) F minor F# octave (2 bars) Bb Bb octave (2 bars) Eb minor F# octave (1 bar) C - Ab Ab (1 bar) Cheers
Essentially what your doing is by playing the 3rd of the chord that the guitarist is playing, what you hear is the 1st inversion of Ebm. It definitely is musically correct for the simple fact that it's a common device & bassists really should understand inversions as it's one of the few powers we've got to take songs somewhere else. Whether it works in the context of your song or not, i don't know, i can't really work out what your playing from the description.

This thread has got ridiculous. There is ways to make a living from music & if the OP wants to try to do that, surely we should be giving advice in how to do that, not criticising it and telling him he's living in a dream. FWIW OP, i'd take the opportunity to talk to Jake Newman, a working player with real life experience & leave this thread to die with arguments that are being by started by people that have no idea about it the industry that your trying to get into to!
I could be snide and make a comment about how your illiterate posts give me some idea of why you're working as a string plucker these days but I won't. You probably think I'm being mean spirited and a killjoy, I'm not. I'm just giving some real world perspective on this matter, in stark contrast to the usual back-slapping cries of "f*** the jobs market"
Surely it's not real world perspective if you've not tried to live in the shoes of a working musician. Your giving a perspective from what i'm assuming is a man thats sat behind a desk looking at a computer screen for 30 odd years. I'm happy that you were sorted for 35 years after a year of uni but i couldn't think of anything worse!
Aren't you at RNCM Jake? One of the best colleges of music in the country? I'm sure a good degree from somewhere like that will mean nothing when applying for something...
I am yeah, but i didn't go so i can have RNCM written on my CV. I worked full-time for 4 years before making the decision to go to university, doing a job i hated, wishing i was making money from music. I just wasn't ready as a musician to do it so i took the opportunity to study there for my own development, not for the 'degree'.
I do want to go to uni just to gain more knowledge on my instrument and being a musician overall. Also its a degree so it sets me apart from others if you get what i mean
The first part is fine. The second sentence does't mean squat mate.
