JakeBrownBass replied to Kirky's topic in Theory and Technique
Looks ok from where i am mate. Personally for me, i know i'd prefer to see a natural than a double sharp but i guess its preference! -
Please check out bass vids - Thanks

Nice playing there. Would be nice to hear the harmony though as i think its pretty hard to follow whats actually going on there without it. -
Thanks Jake, will take your advice, the only problem with shedding both hands at the same time is that Microkorg's keyboard range is pretty narrow, so I can only do two octaves/each hand, not to mention small keys (and they're REALLY small, man..!!) Eh, somehow.... As for previous experience, I've played classical piano for 8 years or something, so I'm quite familiar with this (though I've lost my chops over 5-6 year gap), but those lil' Korg keys are making all the difference.. I have to find some time to start transcribing Justin Timberlake's "Right For Me", which has a wicked synth line. Will post up the dots later on in coming few days time, if anyone's interested in shedding that. PS Oh my,oh my that synth line on Jay-z's tune is out of control, man!!!! Is that you Jake playing your Gaia??)
Aha no man, I wish! In the middle of learning, trying to get the runs to sound smooth! I'll post a clip when I'm done.

What is "The House PA Circuit"? What venues are these?
JakeBrownBass replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
I guess it means they only play shows in venues with house pa's. Meaning they don't have to cart their own pa around. -

Video Killed The Radio - First Few Seconds?
Oh crap, that fill seems really complicated...... And, yeah, I'm now getting my coat, easy. Laimis
It's all about the subtle stuff in this one. Especially holding the octave. Most players would miss that out. -
My inspiration for synth stuff is never really the player. Im more interested in how to recreate that sound & feel of the song at such a produced level. I listen to so much pop music I can't really say who it what I follow!
No problem. Just seemed odd you agreeing with Jake after I had already said the same thing. Credit to Jake for the dots though. Have a good weekend.
Sorry dude, don't want to step on anyones toes. I read the first post & listened to the song, then posted. -
Video Killed The Radio - First Few Seconds?
JakeBrownBass replied to faceman's topic in Theory and Technique
Yeah sorry, i wrote that in 30 seconds. If you want it with tab, i'd play it like this. The notes in brackets not being played. -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26aDHDvnYp4 Not me playing but a good mate of mine. Playing with a full string section has got to beat playing with a midi keyboard any day!

If the filters are interchangeable, why not have the 22db one in the ear next to the drummer & the 17db in the other?
Quote of The Basschat Week, methinks. I think just about the only time you can get away with a bass solo - with just the bass playing that is - is if you piece some very memorable basslines together, as a kind of medley. Take The Jam/Buce Foxton for example - Eton Rifles, Town Called Malice, Tube Station, It`s Too Bad. Put them in a medley, and played to the right crowd of course, that could work. It could also fall flat on it` ar*e if no-one knew the songs of course. For me, there`s only ever been one bass solo I`ve liked in a song, and that`s this, at 1:15 - 1:40
You see to me, thats not a solo. I'd be more inclined to call it a bass break. This for me is by far my favourite bass solo. It starts at about 6.40. It's so musical & melodic for the most part. Obviously the bit that the crowd screams at is the technically challenging bit, but that bit does its job and there just for that reason. It's a funny thing with solo's like this. Sax players try and sound like guitars, bassists try & sound like saxophones etc...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiCSBH-uPxI
Just watched this on youtube and think Wooten has a really good point. HIs observations of how an audience interacts with the music/musicians is really good and I like that he considers not only the music that he is making with his fellow musicians, but also how the audience can feel involved, just through what he chooses to play. Do you agree with VW that 'a bass solo should be based on the groove' so that the audience stay interested? Do you think that as the musician, you should be able to take control musically and the audience should appreciate that without the need for you to consider how to keep them interested too? I'd like your thoughts, as musicians and punters please
I think it depends on the audience & the musicians your playing with. If you've got a strong band that can groove without the bass for instance, with just keys guitar & drums, then you have enough freedom to go off and do what you like. But if the group your playing with aren't conscious of this then it's really really easy to loose the groove of a song. With the audience, if your playing to a room full of musicians, they are much more likely to appreciate what your doing or trying to say with your playing. Whereas if you playing to a room full of average Joes, as soon as that danceable groove goes they will loose interest and your going to have to bring it back. There's a time & a place for a bass solo, and most of the ones i've seen have just been in the wrong time or place of a set.

I think its more to do with unconsciously taking in all what their parents did as the child was growing up and looking up to their parents.

I'm not sure how much editing you get with the gt10 but if you can, you want the attack setting to be high, to get the almost swell sound at the initial start of the note.

Score Writing & Orchestral Study Site
Hey Garry, Do you know any info with advice on doing simple, not orchestral, [pop] tunes' chord charts/transcriptions? easy Laimis
It really depends on what your doing the charts for. If your doing them for other people to use, a full transcription with chords is always going to be the best route. If it's for personal work, you can get away with writing a few bars groove so can remind yourself & then have a simple chord chart throughout but marking any important hits or accents IMO. The stuff i use for shows generally looks nothing like what i post up on my website as i just don't need that much information. Some tunes are literally a structure, a key, and I VI IV V written on them. -
Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

There's loads of different solutions to use depending on your needs. I use to use a Shure PSM200 system as you could plug directly into it, then take the channel out of that back into your amp/multicore & control your own volume. Paired with the old Shure E2's with foam tips. Obviously with a double bass you can go wired as your not really going to be moving about much so could use a really simple solution like the ART Headtap. Essentially, plug the bass in, then take it out to whatever your plugging into. Then use a lead to extend your headphones & use any half decent in ear headphones.

I used to run IEM when i played with my double. I'd only have the bass going through & only use the left ear, as if i was listening to the bass acoustically. Leaving my other ear free to listen to the band.

Say A Little Prayer & For Once In My Life. Most of the songs are pretty much 4 chords. I've got chord charts if you want them, but you'll still need to learn the song to get the grooves.
