It's Not The Same Old Thing - Col Bruce Hampton. Oteil Burbridge is a monster on this. Got the groove down but theres a single bar fill after the guitar solo, 16th note the triplet run down the neck at about 100bpm, it's making my thumb cry

Lead Bassist VS Lead Guitarists
JakeBrownBass replied to Leemarc Ferguson's topic in Theory and Technique
It depends on the gig. If its a jazz gig and there's space for the bass to come out & take that lead position then go ahead & do it. If it's a pop gig, sit back down & do what your there to do. It's all relative to the context in which your playing again. No right or wrong answer. -
I'd say use the right technique for the gig. Does the song need a pick, use a pick. Does it need fingers, use fingers. Does it need Slap. use slap. Is it originally a synth line, use a synth....etc.... If you can do it, do it. If not, do your best with what you have.

Both techniques require an equal amount of discipline. It's all about the context in which it's being applied. There is no right or wrong answer. +1 on the sig thing.

You Know What I Don't Get About Scales...
JakeBrownBass replied to cytania's topic in Theory and Technique
Guys don't you find just going thru scales really boring. Its great for knowledge and note placement but for me having sat as a kid going thru scales and notation I found I learnt a whole lot more from just playing in bands and being forced to learn songs that were out of my comfort zone. I look at scales like watching a school teacher writing on a black board. Its all necessary but is it practical in the real world? Just my personal thoughts
Of course it's practical in the real world. Knowing your theory & scales is the foundation of being a well rounded musician. If you know what key your in, can recognise the chord progression from sight & then be able to apply the correct scale to the piece with out thinking about it, it allows you to play the songs that are out of your playing comfort zone much quicker, as you already have an idea of what the harmony is doing, what 'fits' & you can pretty much predict whats going to come next. -
Powering Active pickups from your head

All EBS heads afaik provide this. Simply link the battery clip together & use a standard stereo jack cable. -
Music tutor books fill me with dread! again.
JakeBrownBass replied to beastly's topic in Theory and Technique
I don't think theres any real tricks to learning it. It's just a matter of putting the time in. Recognising notes on the fretboard should be one of the first things any player should learn. If you learn the C major scale on the fret board, starting from the lowest note (E) up and down the next, saying the note names as you do you'll start recognising intervals on the neck and how the notes look together. Once you have this down, its just connecting the dots in-between. This will then go hand in hand with reading sheet music, you'll never be able to sight read if you can't translate whats on the page to your fretboard. -
Had an awesome week so far for gigs. Been playing Little Shop of Horrors all week, managed to get back for the 2nd set at my residency on the friday night & heading into RNCM to play Saxassualt charts with Andy Scott for their sax day in about an hour.

The owners on these forums. His names Phil if i remember correctly. He's good friends with a lot of guys on here. Tom Kent is a demo tester for them. They're quite popular here

I've got loads of cables so it depends on the gig. They range from about 2m to the largest thats about 18m if i remember correctly. Make all my own cables too so they're not always set lengths.
The ATM guys were great. Three basses all doing their own thing, yet working great as a band. Shame we couldn't have heard more from them.
Cheers dude
Not at all - it's your picture! Great playing there on the show! I loved the tune/medley you guys did.
Cheers dude, we wanted to do something that wasn't "oh look at my chops, look how much slap i can get into 5 minutes"
My bad, the permissions were not set for public viewing on the web. Have changed it - same link should work now.
Cheers for the pictures mate. Got a good picture of me in there, mind if i use it?
Works for me, Jake.
Cheers Bilbo, was mesmerised by Marcus's effortless playing last night and this being a signature i thought i'd give the main groove a go. Not going to replicate that tone again though, can't stand it

Anyone got any pictures of the day??

Just got in from it. It's been an awesome day, had some nice comments after my playing so that's always great to hear. Marcus Miller was an absolute gent. Stayed behind for almost an hour to get photos, signatures & just general chatting with the audience. Scott Devine, what a another top bloke. Had a great chat with him & was nice seeing him in the flesh rather than on youtube. Bernhard Lackier was a really down to earth & nice guy. Was very grateful for all the comments he was getting. Pat Illingworths drumming with Marcus was fantastic, no rehearsals & just got up and played off each other, it was great to watch. Didn't get chance to watch Jah Wobble or Clutterbuck but neithers really my thing so not too worried i missed out. But all in all, a great day
