Learning the intervals of chords
JakeBrownBass replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Theory and Technique
Bilbo do you mean learn the notes (names) of each scale rather than concentrating on learning the names of notes in triads first? I guess knowing all the intervals would be more useful but it also seems like a much more challenging thing to do, which is why I was going to start with 1-3-5s.
Have a look at Jerry Cokers - Patterns for Jazz. It starts off with simple 1-3-5-(8) exercises in all keys. Then through the book it moves on to the more 'exotic' chords. There is years if not decades of practice material in that single book. It will come. Jake -
Awesome awesome groove.
Been playing this for a couple of years and have the Bassline down pat. Got a new guitarist who insists it's all in major chords, despite telling me it's a Blues type chord sequence ( which I knew)! All the online resources suggest it is G Major etc but that does not sound right to me, especially as a Blues. Am I going mad, does anyone know the correct guitar chords please, 'friad I never paid much attention to the last guitarist and I don't stretch to 6 strings!
I have, |G | % | % | % | |G | % | % | % | |Dm |C7 |G | % | From memory the guitar goes. G G/C G7 G/C G There's a flat 7 & a major 3rd in the chord so that may be confusing it for your ear?

I'm really struggling to see how it's going to work this year. They say there will be 5 stands in the cafe area & 5 in the live room. The promenade music stand last year will take up the entire wall of the cafe at BOTW. So does this mean that the stands are going to be even smaller? Also, it may work in the live room as i'm assuming they're going to put the stands on the upstairs balcony, but even then i don't feel the space is big enough. I hope Stevie comes on the forums and explains things before i shell out £25/£27 for a ticket.
If you have seen Bona play for £20, plus an awesome line up of others, plus a great trade show and great facilitys then the £27 does not look so good from here
Exactly this.

I'm really not sure whether i'm going to go or not now. 10 stands don't seem worth it. I'm sure Marcus will be great but it does feel like its a Marcus gig with a couple of trade stands there. Also, the main room is pretty dark and the lighting sucks so i hope they sort that out, don't want to spend the day in a dingy small room being blasted by trebly slap.
Hey man...thanks for the comments. That's exactly what I want to hear man, I'm not posting these things to try to show off or anything, I want peoples opinions and ideas on how I could sound more melodic and natural. It's also great for documenting my progress and useful for me to be able to go back and analyse my playing. I should be doing that a bit more really I guess. Thanks for the comments though. I'll be adding more videos as time goes on. I'm away for a while from tomorrow, but I plan to start recording more and more upon my return. Thanks again pal.
It's a nice piece mate. The start of what you were playing was very repetitive and it felt like you were playing with a single melody and couldn't really get out of your comfort zone but as it went on your confidence grew and you were able to get past it. When songs are a slow tempo its a lot harder to be able to take a melody & move on with it but only practice can improve this. IMO there was a little too much reverb on the entire piece, your melody was getting masked by the reverb on the accompaniment. Was it done on a DAW or with a loop pedal?
But he has a point, nonetheless.
Ok, well the sound of the 80's is making a comeback on a lot of big artist records atm. So they've influenced some people.
Well that was disrespectful. I could just as rightly say that people aren't missing out on motown because there is nothing to miss out on, but I wouldn't say that because it would have totally disrespected the opinions of plenty of people in here. Don't be so effing narrow-minded in your argument, and perhaps people will take more store by what you say.
There was no disrespect meant in the post, it was merely just pointing out that what you were trying to argue in the post i quoted had no substance to it and was merely just an opinion.
Just like Stock/Aitken/Waterman in the 80's or Simon Cowell today. I very much doubt whether it will be much listened to once the generation that grew up with it have passed on. How many people listen to Bing Crosby now? How many will in another twenty years time?
That wasn't my argument.
I don't feel I'm missing out not being aware of much of what these two did, just as plenty of people don't feel they're missing out by not being aware of what At The Gates did.
I feel your totally missing the point. Motown was a company that was churning out song after song for the general public, the broke down barriers between races, making black music desirable to white people. They were a hit making machine. The whole motown thing was more than just the songs and changed culture for good. At The Gates are a Sweedish death metal band that have 4 studio albums and no hit songs. People aren't missing out because there is nothing to miss out on. Fair enough its all your opinion and your entitled to have it, but it has no grounds to stand on as an argument front.
ok.... but on a session or something..someone says this needs a stax/motown type feel...?
Not every bass player wants to be a session player.....some do it just to enjoy playing the music they enjoy.
I've just found in my mailbox mail from Steve about changes. I don't mind date and venue change, I've missed 2 previous bassdays and I want to go and be part of this one. I've bought my ticket online couple of weeks ago, and I think it's rather bad manner to ask people to pay additional fees for tickets already purchased. Going to do it anyway, but don't like it at all
I can't believe theyr'e asking for money from people that have already bought tickets, bad form that.

High End Fretless Question Wal Vs Pedulla Buzz
JakeBrownBass replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
I played a GWB-35 the other day, no longer made and about 400quid second hand, but honestly it was effortless to play, and I have never heard a better fretless tone, so why bother spending all that much? Killer looks and never-go-out-of-tune tuners too!
Because you obviously haven't played the pedulla -
High End Fretless Question Wal Vs Pedulla Buzz
JakeBrownBass replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
My bass tutor uses a fretless 5 string Pedulla Pentabuzz and it is easily one of the best basses i've played. IMO one of the best fretless basses ever produced. -
Not the best but just a bit of fun on a windy day

Maybe they'll have the trade shows at RNCM & Marcus at the band on the wall?
