How so? What regularly gigging band is going to hire someone who cant play the gig after a certain time, cant do a share of the driving, raises insurance premiums and less face it HAS ABOUT 30 YEARS LESS EXPERIENCE THAN MOST PIT PLAYERS. Unless most pit players, session musicians etc age in dog years most I've met/know are between 30-50 and to take their jobs would require serious talent. The guy is 15. Has been fed god knows what by a local teacher and expects to walk into a regularly paying job within the music business. Come on lad. I didn't suggest that he should drop the bass and take up golf or anything. Each point was based on fact. And just to be clear, if you're response is based on 'personal experience' I dont really give a poop, telling someone to get a proper steady job is not nonesense, its common sense. Be specific, I'm in nicotine withdrawal and need a rant.
Right, He's not said he wants to go straight in there and do the job that the seasoned pro's are doing. He's asking how to get there. The nonsense i was referring to was, "Forget about it for a year or two, Focus on getting laid more., Focus on beer more. & still dont have any type of University/collage qualifications that will actually get you into the situation you want to be in." 1. Telling him to forget it is stupid advice, if he wants to do it, let him, who are you to tell him to do otherwise. 2. Telling him to concentrate on booze & getting laid. He's going to do that in his own time, whilst studying what he wants to study. it's part of growing up. 3. No qualification is going to get him where he wants to be.
I wouldn't worry yourself. Mr. brown here is a prime example of what you were talking about earlier, someone who's got somewhere in his hometown, thinks he's the best in the world and needs to be put-down once or twice by a few more experienced pros...
Here we go again Mr Edward Himself. I've already said it once, you think your a big adult and look down on "Young People" & "students". Get over yourself and grow up a little. Lets not forget that your the guy who commented on Stuart Hamms at bassday.....Saying his timing was bad??? Now, OP Alot of the replies here are talking about just a general gigging bassist, I'm guessing you want to be more than that, you want to be a working bassist. It's going to be a lot of hard work & luck. But, you make your own luck. I'm done with this thread, theres to many pub bassists that think they know everything. -
3 suggestions. 1 Forget about it for a year or two because at 15 you aint going to get a serious job. Focus on getting laid more. 2 Forget about it for a year or two because at 15 you're around 30 years less experienced than most session and pit bassists. Focus on beer more. 3 Forget about it for a year or two because at 15 you still dont have any type of University/collage qualifications that will actually get you into the situation you want to be in. And when you do get it theres always someone better than you. Focus on getting a sustainable income before banking on an income from music. And just to clarify theres nothing wrong with tab and eight notes. Statements like that just put people off giving you a job.
1. Nonsense 2. Nonsense 3. Nonsense Also, 8th notes and quavers are the same thing. Its just that ones used over in America & the other over here. -
Hi Orange AD200B users! I was wondering if you could give me some advice on the best EQ settings for this amp. I've had one for a few weeks now and it sounds beautiful on its own, but in a band situation it just doesn't cut through in the same way as the SVT CL that I borrowed for my last tour - the bass seems to be overpowering and a lot of the highs seem to get drowned out. Cheers Russ
Mids are your friends in a band context.
Oh yes +1000
To reiterate this point, as much as i say playing with others is massively important, make sure your playing with the right people. -

Jam nights, know the players in your area. Get a BASS teacher, not a guitar player who thinks he can teach bass. Regarding constructing walking basslines, start looking at II V I chord progressions & the Dorian mode/scale. If that last sentence went over your head, get some theory lessons, although a good bass teacher should do this whilst teaching. What to listen to? Whatever you want, honestly, anything & everything. Its more about getting your name about, talking to different players/MD's. If you want to be a working musician, forget about being flash. Turn up on time, well prepared & nail the gig. Doesn't matter if its a dingy pub gig, backing a big band in a competition, or sitting in a pit at an amateur theatre production. It's hard work, and you'll really really want to do it. -
Been looking at the TD660, but heard lots about the clear "hi fi" sound that is so favoured by slap guys. I play rocky/punky/indie stuff like U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Cure, Elastica, Papa Roach and many others - what it isn't is funky, but it's not thrash metal either. What I'm looking for is traditional thumping and warmth I suppose. I've got a Spector Euro 4 and 5. Now I know advice #1 would be try it myself, and I might well, but looking for any opinions/exeprience of this amp and especially with the Spectors. Many thanks, Steve
The Fafner will definitely be more up your street
I may transcribe it tomorrow, but you'd only get notation, as I'm not doing tab versions - it just doesn't exist in music world, does it..
No need for that mate. To the original poster, if you want it still, I'll have tab & notation done for you, just let me know. Jake
Folks, I've posted this in the "Grooves" Forum, but it may be better placed in here. Mods, feel free to disagree. I'm trying to sort out the bass tab for Free Me by Joss Stone. I've found what purports to be the chords on the net, but I'm far from convinced they're correct. I think I've got the basic riff/Verse OK, but I'm struggling with the instrumental section that runs into "And we're singing in our own voice..." Can anybody help, please? Cheers, Steve
How urgent is this?? I don't mind writing it up at the weekend mate.
Been through a fair few progs to be honest and I know what you mean, there is always a slant. I was a long time Logic user but then I switched to Cubase... for no particular reason... and then I've been using tuxguitar as it's free. Whilst it's good for getting a scrapbook of stuff together, it's nowhere near the league of the big hitters - especially on the printing front, hence the interest in getting the scores looking good. Historically, I would have been looking at Finale for the big scores (dabbled a fair bit with big band scores about 5 or 6 years ago) but now I'm now into my solo arrangements and getting a good looking print out for when I go senile and can't remember how to play them! Hmm, I shall see if I can test drive a copy of both and see how I get on. When dropping that much, you don't want to get it wrong!
You can get demos from both pieces of software & try full functionality for free. Everything i post nowadays has been created on Sibelius. I'm pretty sure all Simon's stuff on The Bassment is all done on Sibelius as well.
How do you do the x for mute notes in Sibelius?
Mac ---> shift + alt + 1 PC ---> shift + alt + P Or the longer way/more options,
-
I've not really got enough experience on both pieces of software to give a fully valid opinion. I've been using sibelius for about 6/7 years and find it incredibly easy to use. I used Finale for about 2 years, just over a year ago, and personally found it quite amateurish compared to sibelius, and it seemed to take me longer to do what i wanted to do. But that could be down to being so use to sibelius. From what i've read online, it normally comes down to what your using the software for. If you planning on writing scores and concentrating on playback using virtual instruments & all that side of it, afaik Finale has better routing options. If its simply to write, print & save a digital copy, i'd recommend Sibelius. I hope that makes sense
Its not how everyone feels, like i said above, try the midi file route it does speed things up, and contrary to some peoples belief, its not cheating, it just speeds things up. And after all these days, its about time and work flow. Funny enough i was just thinking the other day - People take time to post up transcriptions and get loads of downloads, and very rarely get a Thank you reply underneath. And you are one of the few who do. Garry
Cheers for that Garry
Hi Jake, I'm sure I speak for some of the members here in saying that your request is a little bit lazy! Learning tunes and writing out charts is just something that comes with the function band territory mate. There are lots of resources online that can help you out with chord charts etc; Also, working it out for yourself will really help you internalise the tunes faster instead of relying on the hard work of other bass players. Not having a dig mate, just my opinion having been in the same position myself and being told the same thing, I learned a valuable lesson that ultimately improved me as a musician. Good luck! Craig
I respect your comments Craig, and if you spent some time in the theory & technique section you will find I'm no stranger to doing the work myself, heck I post it all online for others to use on my website & on here. I made it clear in my first post that I'm doing it my self but any help would be appreciated. Writing out 40+ tunes is a big task for anyone. I've always lived by if you don't ask, you dont get. As such, I was merely asking. Thankyou though, if that's how everyone feels, feel free to close the thread Jake
