"[20 minutes of high speed bass talk in public]" ...and this is why basschat sales are so much more enjoyable than e-bay. Three or four times I've had 'chatter 'round my place, picking up the item of equipment in question, but then playing every one of my basses, shooting the breeze, having a cup of tea.

What's the best bit of kit you've ever bought?
My custom-fitted earplugs. They work brilliantly and make the gigs much more enjoyable. I don't go home with ringing ears any more - and it means I'll be able to carry on doing this for years to come.
+1
My moulded ER15 ear plugs. Without them I'd have had to quit 5 years ago.
+2
For me, it has to be my Etymotic ER9 ear plugs. (I saw that two others also put that as their choice.) I would like to put a honorable mention for my Sonic Research ST-200 pedal tuner.
+3 Be a tough call, but I'd always choose to play in tune & not damage my ears. So custom fitter ER15s + honourable mention to the trusty BOSS TU-2. -
I've thought about either a YOB from 1974 or a custom job for my 40th birthday: gives me some time to save up. I don't think '74 was a stunning year for basses, so I'd probably aim for a Precision or Ricky if I went that route. I'm leaning towards a USA Sadowsky custom build though: I don't have enough room to have another bass I don't feel I can sell for sentimental reasons.

Gratuitous (and pointless) picture of my Ray. I've been inspired to play it tonight at rehearsal! Mine (a 2008 model) suffered from a really weak G. I would agree it's a tonality thing though as when played in isolation it doesn't sound thinner or quieter, but in a band situation high runs would be lost in the mix. I replaced the PUP with a Nordy MM4.2 and the problem went away. As you can see, the pole pieces are still offset.

Vince bought my GW from me. Non nonsense transaction. Gentleman throughout and excellent communication. Enjoy the bass mate! Dougal.
Gareth, where did you get the specs for the bent endpin, the angle etc?
I was going to ask this too. Also, how do you stop it rotating? does it have to be ground flat where the screw pins it? Some initial investigation reveals you probably do. http://www.doublebassonline.com/2008/08/the-rabbath-end-pin/ Ahh, some step by step instructions! http://www.slavapub.net/pdf/LaborieEndpininstr.pdf Doesn't sound too hard. Something to do with my spare end-pin!

Well out of my price range right now, but isn't it lovely? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warwick-Stryker-Cust...=item33667468d5
A lot of the images are very badly Photoshopped. Look at the awful pics of the ZONs where pesumably it was amateur hour with the pen tool and paths.
Glad I wasn't the only one whose Wa was disturbed by this. The other thing that annoyed me is that they've mirrored a picture to make the layout look better. In a non-musician mag I could understand it, but shouldn't they have more integrity. #Pauses and considers the last sentence# Anyway, they're all tools to get the job done. And I'm convinced Joe Public wouldn't be able to tell which bass is used on a track unless it was used to bludgeon him to death shortly thereafter. #starts another 'sounds in the fingers' thread#

Have to be my Ray. Two reasons: I love the way it plays and sounds, and it was a 30th Birthday present from the wife. I'm never saying never, but I suspect the wife would have to go first!

Nik bought an H&K BaseBass head from me. Excellent communication, turned up on time, fantastically nice fella, enjoyed playing my basses. A big thumbs up.

Up for sale is my GW. I've owned this since new in 2008. Black Dyed and Stabilized Maple Burl Topset, wenge accent layer over swamp ash body Flame Maple, Wenge and Zebrawood neck. Stabilized Purpleheart Fingerboard with Wenge accent layer and matching headstock overlays Custom matching wooden Pickup covers and matching wooden knobs from THG Knobs 2 mm White Mother of Pearl side dots, no inlays on fingerboard It comes with both the original Kent Armstring soap-bars with the wooden pup covers (pictures further down the thread) and some Wizard pups custom built by Andy (currently installed - immediate picture below). The black dyed maple burl looks far more like the picture above than those below. Weight is 5kg or 11 lbs. String spacing is 18mm at the bridge. Ships in Gator HSC. Price is a reasonable £800. Local pickup from Egham possible, and I'll happily ship to Europe. Payment via the usual methods: paypal, bank transfer or cash on collection. More detail: http://www.gwbasses.com/gallery/Dougal_SC-1_5String.shtml I'm selling as I simply never use a 5-string any more. It's funny how these things go in cycles. Trade-wise I'm open to suggestion, with cash going either way.

I ended up dropping both some Lindy Fralin pups and a John East retro in my MIJ jazz. Along with a badass pre-grooved bridge. I miss that bass.
"François Rabbath - The Art of the Bow - DVD", quite amazing
I second that. It is sodding pricey though.

Up for grabs is my now redundant H&K BassBase 600. ***ON HOLD PENDING THE USUAL*** I'm open to trades for anything bass or guitar related; try me. Further details are here: http://www.hughes-and-kettner.com/products...=prod&id=23 and here: http://www.dv247.com/guitars/hughes-and-ke...amp-head--33424 If your German's up to much, you might get something out of this: Pictures of the actual head: It was serviced at Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience a year ago, and given a clean bill of health, despite a road-worn appearance. I don't know how old the 12AX7 valve is. It's missing two screws on the faceplate: it came to me without them. It's given me two years of loyal service and sounds magnificent. It's sodding heavy at 18.5Kg, and been replaced with a much smaller head. I will happily ship to mainland UK, according to interparcel.com, a 50x40x20 package of 17kg will be £15 (when VAT and insurance are factored in). Local pickup from Egham or Woking possible. I can deliver locally, although if you don't have transport, you won't want to be lugging this on the bus.

An update: I found a LM3 on here, so I'm trying that. Worst that happens is that I have to sell it on, eh?
What type of tone are you looking for?
Depends on the situation. I have two bands, one of which is metal & rock covers. SO think gently over-driven to Lemmy distorted. The other is a pop / functions band, so lots of messing around with the pups & EQ on the bass to go from burpy funk to disco to slap. I tend to leave the EQ on the amp flat and mess with the sound form the bass (I only use active basses for that reason). The Basebass has been fine; tonality wise I'm happy with it, and I'll probably keep it until the replacement has proved itself. The (as it's so tatty) it'll be an e-bay 99p no reserve offering.

Given I'm about to liberate some funds by selling a bass, I thought I'd use some of it to replace my aging, and incredibly heavy, H&K Bassbase 600 with one of the newer lightweight amps. Buget is a not terribly firm £650, with less money being spent the better. The amp has to cater for pretty much most musical styles: from heavy rock through to disco. So far I'm considering: Orange Bass Terror (Probably not as it's a bit monotonastic (hurrah! I've invented a word)) GALLIEN KRUEGER MB500 MARKBASS LITTLE MARK III SWR HEADLITE ASHDOWN LITTLE GIANT 1000 AGUILAR TONE HAMMER SC500 I don't think I want to change my cab (Aguilar 4x10). Obviously, I'm going to try before I buy. But before even that, does anyone have anything good (or bad) to say about the above? Are there any others I should be considering?

I'm not all that learned, but I'm a fan of Rabbath: George Vances Progressive Repertoire books are a must (IMHO). I think it was The Major (Minor) who pointed out all the pros play half way up the neck as it's less stress on the left hand: the vance books start up half way up the neck and de-mystify that whole area of the bass. I want a bent end-pin, but I don't want to destroy my bass doing it!
