nice collection - that Carvin looks really nice, and the GW too (I had to look them up http://www.gwbasses.com/index.shtml) - how did you come by that one?
I spent six years living in NY, USA - when I fell in with what I'd describe as a 'bad crowd' at www.uglybassplayer.com One of the initiation rites to the club is you have to order a bass from Grandon & then wait for over a year for it to arrive. It is the nicest player of the bunch by some margin: it just sounds flat. There's no top end 'zing' to it. Shame really because otherwise I really wouldn't need another bass (at least, that's what I tell myself...) Tempted to replace the electronics with those from the Bongo to see what happens, but the PUPs are just completely the wrong shape.

And I've found a problem... Any one know where in the UK I can get a practice mute from? It's a touch loud arco. Like this one:

Anyone who has experience of transporting a bass on public transport will know, it can get quite heavy. Who uses a wheel? And who uses a trolley? I'm going to need to buy one. The choices are: ...which doubles as a stool, but is £300 FFS. ..which is cheaper at £60, but doesn't allow the bass to be left standing... Any advice?

Back into playing the double bass some more. I've got the classical side sorted (ish). But I'd also like to do some other stuff. Jazz (although I'm not fantastic I can read parts & just about walk), big band, swing.
First off - how do I know if I've adjusted the bow to the correct amount of tension?
You should be able to push the bow down onto the string & only just be able to get the hair touch the bow. If that makes sense.
Should I loosen the bow off after use?
Yes, but not too much. The hair still needs to be straight & not flapping around in the breeze.
How often should I apply rosin to the bow, and how much?
When it needs it, three or four strokes is enough, but depends on how sticky your rosin is... Generally I find I have to re-rosin every hour of playing.
I'm getting a build up of rosin on the strings, should I clean it off and if so, with what?
I use a yellow duster - wipe down the strings after use or when they get too sticky. Be interesting to see what everyone else thinks....

I've recently acquired a nice H&K head, so I'm looking to trade my 410 combo + 15 cab for a cab. The entire rig is an NC410 on top of a 115 cab (both of which have horns). I bought this second hand, and have owned it for about 18 months. It's been played / gigged about once a month since then. It's always been rock solid, and is loud enough in isolation (320W) to cover a drummer. Official link is here: http://www.eden-electronics.com/Nemesis/indiv/nc410.asp I'm looking for cab(s) with 10s, 12s or 15s to trade. The amp comes with casters: although the inner sleeves all need replacing. I'm in Surbiton, Surrey. If you want to make a cash offer, I'd be open to that.

Nice looking bass. Ever since the late 80's I've always fancied a BC Rich. Didn't the blonde bloke out of WASP use one of these for ages?

Ashbory Mini Bass My son plays this, mostly. It's a nice gimmick, but never used in anger. Carvin XB75P (Tuned F#BEAD) Death Metal Bass. Koa top. Really nice player. Musicman Bongo Good all around bass. Some people don't like it. I traded in a fretless 5 thumb for it. Miss that thumb some. Best overall sounding. Atelierz Mini-CUB upright electric. http://www.atelierz.co.jp/cubpassive.htm EUB. I try. Stingray Everyone should own at least one 'ray in their life. This one could cut cheese with the sound. MIJ Jazz (w/ Badass and Lindly Fralins) Just an awesome player. Gassed for a Jazz, played about 30 in shops around Shinjuku and Shibuya. This was the best. GW #23. Best overall playing / comfort. Wish peanut 6 fretless Wish claims he makes "Paint brushes for musicians". I think he makes baseball bats with strings. It's a 6-er fretless so it gets some use. The neck takes some getting used to. I ordered it unfinished: It was far from perfect: Here's the neck, compared to a thumb fretless (fattest neck I had...) I finished it in tung oil, and fitted an adjustable bridge. It does have some nice contouring behind the neck....
Yes, the ML is much better balanced than the Z, hardly a touch of neck dive. The strap button is behind the neck a-la Gibson which does help. I moved the Z a while back to the same position to help this too. The main thing with the ML is the weight..it is very light but still projects an amazing tone! As I said, the pickups are the Dean MetalMan pickups you find on their MetalMan series. According to some of the guys in the States, the bog-standard MetalMan series Basses are really good. The passive ones apparently sound better than the active which is a pretty good thing seeing as you can buy a passive MetalMan ML Bass over here for about £190. I'm going to try and get Dean to make a Ltd Editon Demonator or V Bass in the near future too.
Mmmmm. Pointy!

I was listening to a track from a "Bassics" mag cover CD. Forgot how awesome some of the stuff they have on was. Anyway, stumbled across this fella: http://www.renaudgarciafons.com/english/index.html Worth a listen IMHO.

Been listening for a while now. I really enjoyed the Kolstein Interview episodes. Do you listen to any other bass related pod-casts? Apart from this & the occasional freakbass one I'm more into the footie...
Anyone had a good experience with bow and EUB?
I can honestly say that I haven't. I've been playing my Atelierz Mini-CUB (http://www.atelierz.co.jp/cubpassive.htm) with a bow as I'm still searching for a decent upright that isn't going to cost the earth. The first thing is actually bowing: for some reason I have much more control over an acoustic: the bow tends to run away much less. Dynamics are easier etc. Secondly is the sound. It's REALLY quiet through the on-board magnetic pick-up. I've attached a cheap piezo to the bridge which makes the overall level (arco vs. pizz) much more level. Interested to see how people's mileage varies: I know the Yamaha Silent Bass is designed to be bowed...

When I bought my guitar I only really had one in mind. Sadly it's the predictable Les Paul. Went to Andersons, tried about 15, walked away with the best playing one. Previous to that I had a GS-1. Great guitar.

So http://www.basscentre.com/ claims they're still in Brune street, but when I was there today there was nothing.... well, there was an office where downstairs bit used to be. Wasn't the best shop in the world - but was a great place to kill half an hour playing basses no-one else stocked. Anyone have any ideas what happened?

Where to try NS BassCello (in the UK)
dougal replied to mixingwithtom's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I was in Footes Music in London & they had one. Although I now can't find it on the web-site.... http://www.footesmusic.com/ -
