1. oh and Audio transcriptions of solo's are also welcome to be posted! :-)
2. Hi guys! I've recently got heavily into transcribing several bass solo's by ear and have seen many benefit's from it, as well as my ear's getting bigger (so to speak) my playing and hand's have been much more fluid, not to mention my own playing seem's fresher and have had more idea's and phrases under my fingertips! So i wanted to start this thread for people to talk about their transcribing process, what programs they use to do it, and a chance to post video's of their hard work and progress with it! I'll start with my first full transcription: an old Hadrien Feraud solo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhwD_2IynJM
3.
My techniques seems to be more diaganolly so when I raise my pups my fingers come to rest on pickup and stops me getting any weird overtones by inadvertently tapping the string below. I can't do the upwards technique very well
That's cool man - whatever works for you, and is comfortable I say stick with! I play fingers straight through the strings and back onto the previous string, but the upwards fingering style gives it a slightly different tone.. Sharper as apposed to smoother... It all has it's place I think! :-)
4.
Yeah, I'll have to introduce myself when I see you next!
Definitely man :-)
5. I've got really into transcribing over the last 6 months and was using Window's Media Player for the slow down function to pick out notes more easy and clearly, but have just started a 30 trial of the software called 'Transcribe!' and it is so much better than WMP, you can slow it down by much more and the quality of the audio does not suffer! What i tend to do is transcribe a few bar's but write it down along the way, and then spend some time getting those bar's to sound fluid and cemented into my muscle memory and move on from there.. at the moment i'm working on several of Hadrien Feraud's bass solo's and they are some of the hardest phrasing and note choicing pattern's i've ever come across, but i love the challenge and nothing more satisfying (IMO) than finishing a transcription of something you at first didnt think you would be capable of doing! This is my first transcription of an old Hadrien Feraud bass solo that i uploaded recently! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhwD_2IynJM Working on another solo of his at the moment, and it is 3 times as hard as that one! yikes!
6. Apologies for the sound quality, the IPhone 5 hasn't got the best mic on it, but is all I have to film these things :-)
7.
Quick question for people that use a ramp or play over a pickup raised high - after you pluck the string does your fingers tips follow through into the ramp which is how it stops you digging in?
I would have to say yes for me, it definitely has that effect, Gary Willis and Matthew Garrison, tend to have an upwards fingering technique.
8.
I'm interested in making it. I'm going to make a ramp for my LTD jazz, I'll try to do one for This one too. Hopefully without having to ask Cameron to send me his bass, but not sure how possible that is. Sorry Bill for hijacking your thread. If we go ahead on the ramp and post pics maybe I should go to another thread? or do we stay here?
No worries at all, i created this thread for a discussion on ramps and to see other player's basses with ramps etc! so go right ahead :-)
Here's a pic of the Marmite, sorry - Ramp, on the Perception. And yes, it is Ziricote/Walnut, to match the body of the bass. http://i49.tinypic.com/xmn8lg.jpg RK
That is extremely beautiful!
9.
Nice! I've heard of you a lot in Weston. The only time I've seen you play was when you recorded the video for the rapper (can't remember his name) in the performance space at Weston College. Sounded awesome! Mike
Cool man! thanks :-) that was with Chet, he is great! good to see another W-S-M guy on here aswell!
10. Would love to see what a ramp looks like on a P/J bass! Would look interesting for sure, keep us updated with it :-)
11. It's all down to your playing style and goals I suppose, I definitely wouldn't recommend it to every bass player but certainly people that are into fusion/jazz style playing! :-)
12.
I'm considering getting a ramp on mine actually, never played a bass with a ramp though so I'm not sure about getting one made then not liking the addition, especially when money is this tight for me at the moment.
I totally agree, you dont want to be wasting money like that, but just so you know the ramp isn't permanently fixed onto my bass, its a double sided tape sort of stuff (but it is ON there) i had the option to have it bolted on but who knows how i'll feel about it in the future, so went with the temporary option, what bass do you have out of interest?
13. Thanks marcus! glad you enjoyed the clip.
14. Hi guys, just had a Wenge ramp recently built and installed on my 1990 Warwick Streamer Stage I, loving the feel of this thing and not digging in as much with it, so getting a generally smoother tone with also a bit more fluidity in the right hand with my fingers not going so much under the strings.. It's not permanently fixed, as who knows how I'll feel about it in the future, but for now really enjoying the addition! Who else is sporting a ramp on their bass? Here is a clip of latest video with her, will upload some decent quality pictures if anyone is interested :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhwD_2IynJM
15. Hi Mike, thanks for the compliments i definitely had another level in me! but was one of those moments of feeling right to end it there after a certain amount of bars in my head! next time! haha! My rig is a TC electronic RH450 going through a TC 2x10 and 2X12, i love it!
16. Hi all! thought i would share my first Hadrien Feraud transcription! I've spent maaany hours working this solo out by ear (among other solo's of his) and was definitely a challenge but also very fun and was a nice insight into Hadriens playing, note choice and patterns! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhwD_2IynJM
17. Hi all! This is a short clip - filmed by the sound engineer on my gig a few weeks back in the tune 'Superstition' all improvised, let me know what you think! :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j_Rzg61ovw Thanks!
18. Here is a pic of my 1990 Warwick Streamer Stage I, modded with an Aguilar OBP3 pre-amp and a set of Nordstrand Big splits... also added a Wenge ramp to her a few months back! love this bass.
19. Cool vid man, thanks for sharing! aslong as you're having a good time with bass playing at home and feel no need to go out and gig then that's totally fine, its all about having fun with it and producing that musical satisfaction.
20. Here is a live high quality audio clip of me playing with one of my function band's to demonstrate my playing with a drummer :-) https://soundcloud.c...yuk/love-on-top - Bill. Also available for Studio work and Tuition.
21. Thanks grelum - the only way to find out is to test it out in a rehearsal I guess, it's worth having I think even if you're using it off stage :-) @fretmeister It's not actually a Marleux (although I get that a lot!) it's a HK bass made in Germany, they are fairly cheap basses! Pickups are 'Kent Armstrong'
22. Hi Guys, here is a clip of me practicing my soloing/phrasing using the Ditto Looper by TC Electronic on my 7 string bass, thought i would share it with you, and hope that anyone else who has one of these pedals could post their clips (video or audio) aswell using the pedal to spark off some idea's and inspiration on ways for using this little beauty! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcMtcPQCH-c Bill.
23. Nice mike! what ramp are you using on that bass? is it an Ebony wood?
24.
I have a rosewood ramp fitted to my streamer LX6, I had Jon Shuker make the ramp for me and its fixed to the body with double sided tape. If you want a fixed ramp, the main thing to know is how close do you want the surface of the ramp to the strings
I want to raise the pickup's a bit, and then have it the same height! do you have any pics of your streamer LX6 with the ramp??
