1.
Had an idea in my head a while back about defretting one of these... Lovely looking bass though. This is one of the newer satin finish ones isn't it?
Thanks - yes satin finish in olympic white.
 2.
Beautiful! Sadly I have no money to blow on basses
Cheers mate, yeah she is gorgeous! :-) No worries, thanks for your comment.
 3. Hi bass chat! Here is my Fender Jazz Modern Player 5 string for sale - Reason for sale is that i had originally bought this bass as a back-up 5 string for gig's, but have recently gone back to using 4 string's a lot more, so has pretty much made this one redundant! it is an awesome sounding bass! and has had a professional setup a week ago, so the action and intonation are spot-on, it's real comfortable and a pleasure to play. Price bought new was £440, and i'm looking for £380 for it, the bass is 3 months old, and in immaculate condition! if you want any more pics of the bass then let me know! :-) Here is a live clip of her in action: http://youtu.be/m1Yf6Vybk7Y Thanks, Bill. 4.
Superb mate - I enjoyed that. That would probably take me years to figure out!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it man! The Transcribing process get's easier and quicker the more you do it, give it a try man, you will notice your ears will heighten by a massive step! :-)
 5.
I liked the solo posted second better. It's got fewer notes, but loads more groove and passion (IMHO) As you say, I suspect most of the greats put solos together using "building blocks" of solo pieces. Doing this allows them to go into familiar areas and leaves them time to plan and think, but as Bilbo says... it works sometimes better than others. Hats off to you again.
Cheers man, glad you dug it, means a lot!
Hey Bill - I think you're right that Had probably worked a few things out for this solo - it's so easy to punch in on a recording and add various bits in the studio - although I suspect he will have played a lot of it 'off the cuff' but as Bilbo says top players all have vast reserves of ideas and someone like Hadrien has shedded solos like crazy for 10-15 years - he had all the Jaco stuff down by the time he was 16 so let's give the guy some credit for his improv abilities - they are pretty sick!
Yeah of course! that has all helped him get to a stage where the bass is just an extension of his body! playing over changes is totally second nature to him, and most of it is probably auto-pilot! not using too much amount of thought! unless it's something like Giant Step's, but even then.. effortless!
You have a nice lyrical style in soloing Bill. Something a lot of Bass players struggle with when soloing (IMO) And well played in the OP video, nice phrasing and cleanly executed.
Thanks lowdown :-) glad you enjoyed it! i'm going to try and a put a few more of my own video's up of just improvising in between transcribed solo video's.
 6.
Yes with the Vigil. Great concert. Very loose sound compared with say, the Elektric Band. Hadrien was astounding - much of which was on his fretless. Chic looked very engaged and focused.
Nice! I wish i was around to see that gig on that week when they were playing Ronnies! Was the fretless bass he was using the red F-bass??
 7.
Great work there Bill!
Thanks jim!
 8.
Great patience required to work that out and play it back, nice one
Yeah man, tell me about it! haha, was great fun though and very beneficial, thanks.
Just to show the other side of the the coin, I saw HF a few years ago at the Manchester Bass Day and whilst I thought he was technically proficient, his playing did not grip me the way someone like...Pino ( names a player I like at random) does. Different strokes perhaps?
Totally understand mate, It's different for everyone, i have days where i'd prefer to listen to Pino playing two note grooves, and some days i get into a fusion mood where technical player's move me more!
 9.
Don't you hate it when people say how great someone is just because they have their boob hanging over the bass and.. oh.. hang on.. wrong thread
HA! you can call me Bill Boobenfeld.......
 10.
Well... Damn! Awesome job!
Cheer's Myke!
Well done Bill - Hadrien is a fiend on the bass and his lines are very complicated - I don't think any bass player (and I mean any) can truly match the clarity he gets at such high speed but you did a great job on this - it's one of his more melodic solos and one I really like as well - the scarest part is that he 'made this up on the spot...' - all said and done your work on this is great. I must do more of this kind of thing myself but I'm more focused on developing my own style - I'd love to hear a solo by YOU on some changes etc - I'm sure doing this kind of thing massively helps develop your own technique and ideas.
Thank's for checking it out Mike - appreciate the kind words, i personally believe that most of this solo was composed for the track... but that's my opinion, a lot of his improvised solo's on gig's are amazing! so i wouldn't put it past him to come up with this on the spot! but have a feeling about how well placed some notes and phrases are that he might of worked this out before recording the take! about my own thing, it has definitely really heightened my ear a lot! and also understanding of harmony/playing over changes/phrasing/rhythm etc! i tend to chuck a few videos on my YouTube channel of myself improvising, definitely need to do it more often though! this one is a basic c-minor chord progression but me soloing over the top, so let me know what you think, its fairly old but it is what it is..
Nice Bill Sounds wicked
Thankyou, glad you enjoyed it!
Surely it's, therefore, easier for Hadrien if he makes it up on the spot, because he's simply playing what "feels right". He isn't listening to a track and a youtube vid trying to copy someone. So, congrats Bill on an excellent job. I'd like to hear some of your own grooves. That said.... with all the greats; do they ever REALLY make things up entirely on the fly? Aren't they really practised and prepared before hand?
Thanks man, this year i will definitely be working on writing and getting my own music out there, have so many idea's but never had the time to properly structure it all, and arrange musicians to rehearse/record it, so will be on that this year hopefully! :-) Like i sort of mentioned in response to Mike, all the Greats have there signature chops and licks practiced for sure! but depending on what musical situation they are in, is how they act on using them, or leaving them behind, i've seen a few different video's where i have heard Victor or Hadrien use the same lick/phrase/chop! but the way its structured or put together and built upon is all on the fly, unless its a studio situation then mostly i believe it would be composed or thought out slightly before being recorded! thats just IMO!
Nope. You make them up on the spot. You get yourself ready by educating yourself about chords and scales and by developing your ear etc but, fundamentally, it is about hitting the motherlode on the day. Most of use us achieve that about twice a year. The best guys about 4 times Have had a listen and it is a great performance, Bill (nice phrasing and a nice sound). One question (nothing to do with the video). You call it a transcription in the title of the thread. Have you actually transcribed it as in written it down? If not, I would call it a rendition not a transcription. Either way, good work.
Thankyou, about the title, i tried to stay clear from the word 'Transcription' and mention that i've transcribed it (it is written down in a rough way at the moment) and performed it, but rendition does make sense! the transcriptions will be up on my website in the near future, so when its up and running please check back if you're interested (www.billbanwell.com)
 11.
Great playing. You too are a monster
haha, thanks man, not quite yet, but working on it!
Didn't recognise the name and so came on here expecting another thread about a 70s BBC presenter...glad I was wrong! Brilliant playing
Thats hilarious! ha! cheers mate!
Bloody hell, mate. That is fantastic! Mucho respect!
Cheers for watching! glad you dug the clip!
 12.
"Hadrien Feraud is a Monster!" He is! Caught him recently at Ronnie Scott's with Chic. Well done for transcribing... I bet your ear and chops have improved...
Amazing, i take it that was with The Vigil? have been listening to their album and found a solo i want to transcribe, so that will be up in a month or two! Yes ear has heightened to a higher standard, and understanding of harmony/playing over changes/phrasing/rhythm etc has improved a great deal, so many benefits to transcribing, it has become a big part of my practice routine!
Great playing , and lovely sound! Hadrien has become one of my influences in recent times, absolutely love his version of I can't help it from a music show a few years back, it's on YouTube check it out
Thanks dude, yeah i haven't been so inspired since i first saw Wooten, although a completely different player..very influential! yeah i have seen that clip.. i must of seen them all! haha, with David Haynes on the drum machine? lots of great basswork on that vid!
That's not something I'd normally listen to , but I really liked that .
Thankyou, glad you enjoyed it
 13. So finally finished and uploaded this solo that Hadrien did from Bireli Lagrene's album! Spent many hours transcribing this by ear and can say was the toughest solo I've had to workout yet! What is scary is that this solo of his is 6 years old... Let me know what you think, and for anyone else who transcribes what programs are you using? I was using Windows Media Player slowdown function and then at last minute discovered the brilliant 'Transcribe!' Program! 14.
[sub]What I have just witnessed literally scared me . . . ! . . . [/sub] [sub]As a relative novice I now feel that I should throw my Bass into a skip as I truly know, hand on heart, I will NEVER achieve [/sub] [sub]or get any where close to the standard I have just seen. Simply put . . . [/sub][sub]Im a broken man . . . [/sub] [sub]Send me the TAB :-) [/sub] [sub]All the best[/sub]
Haha! Didn't mean to scare or discourage you man! But I wouldn't think like that, anyone is capable of anything if they put their minds and hearts into it! The transcription/Tab will be available on my website in the near future along with other transcriptions that I've done, Thanks :-) Bill.
 15. Hi guys, This is my second Hadrien Feraud bass solo that I have transcribed, and has been one of my favourite bass solo's for years! Back then I thought it would be impossible to play and even more impossible to work out by ear, but with a lot of inspiration and patience I managed to transcribe it using the Windows media player (slow speed setting) to help pick out the trickier and less obvious notes! hope you enjoy, let me know what you think! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz2_959xvTo
 16.
I'm not sure about softer, it just made my picking technique shallower
The shallowness gives you less attack through the strings, so its very hard to achieve that aggressive dug-in tone! i always get an instant softer but still ballsy tone! Although when i go back to my Fender Jazz 5 (rampless) i do love digging in on her! haha.
 17. Hi, after some gig cancellations, i'm free and available for dep gig's this Friday and Saturday, if anyone is looking for a bass player to stand in on a gig, i have a huge repertoire of song's under my belt, so please give me a shout if needed! i have my own transport & professional gear.. punctual, good attitude, Give me a call or text on this number: 07815981865 Kind regards, Bill. [email protected]
 18.
It's very good man. I'm never keen on bass solos, but you clearly have command of the instrument and the finesse to carry it off. Would be nice to hear your own compositions.

Well played Bill. No matter what you transcribe (any Instrument), the end result will always be good for your (anyone's) ears, and a better understanding of harmony/theory etc. Others may think it a waste of time of course, otherwise it would not be Basschat. Garry
Thanks for checking it out, and for the compliments, I'm writing my own stuff in between all this transcribing so hopefully I can present you with a piece of music on my channel in the future :-)
 19.
At home from uni at the moment in Birmingham .
Oh right! I was going to recommend you to a guy down here in Bristol, but that's definitely a tad out of your way!
I play with a pick but when I was playing one of Doods Shukers it had a ramp on and I found it a very interesting experience. If I was getting another custom made (in a solid colour) I would definitely allow for an addition of a ramp if I felt like it
Sounds cool mate, it's quite nice the way it makes you approach the strings, like I said before it's made me a softer player, with a smoother tone, turn up, play lighter! :-)
 20.
How is the ramp secured?
I was told that the ramp is secured using a very thin but very strong double sided tape, the other option was a permanent fixture but I thought that the temporary fixture would be a lot smarter, for the fact that I might feel differently about it in the future or wanting to sell the bass (highly doubt it but you never know)
I'd post a picture of mine, if it had arrived . I approached a luthier who posts on here sometimes to make me one. He said he would and it'd be £10 plus postage, which I duly paid by bank transfer. Four days later still no ramp, so I emailed him and his reply "sorry, totally slipped my mind, I'll post it today". Today being Saturday and the time 2 o'clock in the afternoon, what post office is open at 2 o'clock Saturday ? Anyway I emailed him back asking him if he'd send it by special delivery, I mean it's only a little bit of wood, and I did pay £3.50 postage. Special delivery is the only way it'll arrive before Christmas. He didn't reply to that email which has annoyed me to say the least. I was gonna order 2 or 3 more for my other basses, if he doesn't send it special delivery then I won't be ordering from him again.
Dude that sounds like mega hassle, where are you located?
 21. And feel free to post more pics of your ramps! :-)
 22. Hi guys, just got some good quality pics of the ramp on my Warwick! check them out below;
 23.
Not for me then, I play in the gaps, seem to need the depth below strings. Everyone is different
I play differently per bass, i also have a 5 string Fender Jazz (without ramp) that i use for more of the Rock/Pop projects i play with which i really like to dig into on gigs! but when i go back to the Warwick i play with a lighter touch for a less harsh and more smoother sound! with the Fusion/Blues/Jazz stuff, so i kind of adjust to each instrument i have along with the genre, and not stay in the same playing style or strapped down to one technique.. i'm sure other guy's round here have the same situation.
