(Christmas don't half eat into your free-time, doesn't it?).
em... nope why would it?

me on bass. John Frusciante on vocals Josh klinghoffer on keyboard and backing vocals Chad Smith on drums (who else?) Mark Knopfler on guitar, only a little less bluesy. Tom morello on rhythm guitar. Yeah, a big mish mash of what those artists are known for, but that would be a great band i think. Anybody ever heard Josh Klinghoffer sing? wow!
without in any way disagreeing with flyfisher: Some people do change. Actually, I suspect a lot of people do. I did, and more than once. It wasn't painless, but it was worth while. I think that this sort of change needs someone close to the person who's (possibly) going to change, though.
I learned the hard way, and quite many times that leopards never really do change their spots. I never have, i know that. Of course, we all correct the silly little things about us to make us a little bit more socially acceptable, but much to my despair and downfall, i will always be the most laid back and biggest procrastinator the earth has ever seen. Remarkably, both my mothers family and my fathers family have a history of being procrastinators, so i was doomed before i even existed. (just like to point out that the procrastination normally refers to anything that isn't interesting to me, or isn't looking done right now, and isn't a physical task. i am a good worker though) So small silly things- people can change those, if they are willing. Large flaws in persons manner- It cannot be changed, no matter how much you or anybody else wishes it could be. and i think it would even be rude to ask. you might as well say they aren't particularly good looking, and have a small penis at the same time.
Sorry to post yet another "sacked off with certain member/s of band" thread but I believe it's crunch-time for me. One of my bands is about to play our first gig after 3 years of jamming, writing and rehearsals. Thing is I'm sadly thinking that I have no choice but to jack it in after the gig. I've tried, but I just can't get on with one of the band members. He is incredibly rude to the lovely friendly guys who run our rehearsal space, he wants creative control though all he can offer is obstructive comments about songs he refuses to play, at rehearsal he doesn't play to best of his ability as he says he wants to save himself for his gym/tennis session, he never seems to want to be at any of our sessions when he's there and he is generally grumpy, narky and sulky. Also he constantly makes sweeping statements about genres of music that he doesn't like, want to play or be influenced by i.e. reggae, dub, punk, jazz or anything 80s. I've spoken to the guitarist about this and he agrees with me but seems more prepared to let things go. I don't feel as though we can kick him out as he is one of the founder members. What I am thinking of doing is resigning from the band in the new year and asking the guitarist, who is great, creative and really easy going, to join my other band. I know this may seem a bit sneaky and underhanded but I would sooner walk than get to the point were we have a huge falling out, which is likely if the band carries on. It would be a real shame as we have written some great stuff and been getting really positive feedback. Sorry to burden you all with this but I just needed to get it off my chest before I flip. PS. his playing isn't that great either.
2 lines of thought, as has been said. Quietly accept that he is who he is, and get on with it, all the while resenting, and having rage build inside you. (i have been here many times with work colleagues, although he was far from quiet about his dislike of me, although i got the blame). Or throw the head up, say life's too short, you're an ignorant bastard, and i can find a usurper quite easily. I know which one i would choose. One is definitely better for your health
There are SOOOOOO many angles possible from that picture mate, for me it contains deep pathos. And there's any number of backstories possible, I think Rob should look a little deeper, there's so much possible from this, and you have a number of character and story perspectives to write from, himself, his son, daughter, wife, best friend .. I love it and hope I get time to do something. Mind you, I'm into the instrumental opera thing I've kinda got into but I love the idea of writing some lyrics and getting a vocal on it. We'll see
I tend to think of the events leading up the to picture. also, currently listening to a bit of John Frusciante, with some of his more recent "breakbeat and soft-synth" approach. could be something i need to explore for this competition. wish i could sing like ol' John though
...I told him I'm too old and fed up with it(soon to be 50) I pointed out the things against age, I don't drive, and location.also usual band politics etc. Then he said ,"you are single ,need to get out more " etc. Apart from possessing good gear, I'm still looking for something to convince me .
Dude, i'm sure you remember bands like the red hot chill peppers rise to fame, those guys are 50, and still gigging and recording a lot. Like flyfisher said, it is a poor excuse. Plenty of people in popular music are 50 and above. 50 is nothing now. You have an increased risk of strokes, heart attacks and heart disease, but good tips to avoid them is a half decent diet and doing what you love, maybe with the odd bit of exercise. please yourself, but never use your age as an excuse. But maybe some day in 20 years, you might be wishing you had taken the opportunity when you had the chance, and before you got too slow and fragile to go smash it on stage like you could have done 20 years earlier.

valve and solid state- what's the difference?
MiltyG565 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Amps and Cabs
Technically correct, but it is indeed pinned at the top of the Amps and Cabs forum, which is what Jack meant: http://basschat.co.u...-amps-and-cabs/ There's a lot to read in that thread, but of course your question was already answered very well by StingrayPete. best, bert
I saw that, but i wanted to know more than "what's better, valve or solid state?" "valve" "Alright (Y)" -
Can the X Factor judges hear what we hear on the TV?
MiltyG565 replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
oh here comes Milty, to dive head first into some more controversy. Firstly, to the OP, no, they don't hear what we hear. what we hear is often auto-tuned (yeah, i know, imagine how bad some of them are before auto-tuning). Not sure if they use auto-tune in the live shows, but they definitely do for the auditions and boot camp and all that stuff. I was just talking with a musician friend, and we both agreed, that if an artist really has talent, they will break through on their own merit. Yes, X-Factor is good to get you off the flying start in your musical career, but it just seems to attract such wannabes. I mean, are those people that clueless to not know how to go about making their own EP or album? Theres a 15 year old round our way that i'm sure will be pretty well known in the UK in the next 5 or 6 years. I'm sure if he went on the X-Factor, even if he wasn't as good as (he really is something else), Simon "moneybags" Cowell would be all over him, because he is a good looking lad. I mean, c'mon, there has to be more to appearing on the show than "having a dream" and "giving it my all" (what the f*** even is your all? maybe you awl? your brad-awl? f*** knows) and "being the next X-Factor".... ERR! hang about. Name 3 X-Factor winners that have been consistently successful since their win. saying that you can win the X-Factor says nothing more than you want to be on TV and win a show. It actually says more if you loose the competition, because you are more likely to be successful that way. The whole show reeks of it, and i'm glad that people are starting to catch on to what a fix it is, and how it is nothing more than a ploy to find some "marketable" girls and boys that they can sell lunch-boxes and posters of... oh, and CD's, gotta sell some CD's too. -
I have an idea or two but am not sure if I can be arsed (it would be something I wouldn't actually like). Problem is, as a life long teetotaller, I don't like 'drunk' stories and alcohol and its associated activities bores me rigid ('oooh look, he did something stupid when he was drunk; - the anecdotal equivalent of 'You've Been Framed' - 'ooh, look. He fell over!!). I guess I could think of something left field as a 'critique' of the pictured behaviour?
Most drunk stories are fairly witless, yes, but having a few drinks really does loosen you up and allows you to relax, and have a bit of craic. I know it isn't everyones cup of tea, and some people don't need a beer or 2 every now and then to lighten up, but can you really hold a grudge to those that do? It's been a long time since i was drunk, and with good reason, but a drink or 2 every now and then is no harm I'm more of a cider man myself though.

valve and solid state- what's the difference?
I think I could manage playing with it held like an upright, enough to keep going to practice and go over the simple songs but the cast is under my palm so I cant really get a neck between it and my fingers what you done to your leg?
aw that sucks man. I did nothing to my leg. I can't explain it so... it was God. (just a joke, no true malice behind it) But i dunno, my leg is just eternally and progressively sore. hopefully my MRI scan results will be back soon. -
so hang on... new years day could be double celebrations for somebody. "oh... yay... it's the new year...... OMG I JUST WON THE COMPOSITION COMPETITION!"

I just plug 'em in and they either make the sound I like or they don't.
That's absolutely fine, but i want to know a bit more. I'm just one of those people who can't stand not knowing things! -
Drunken christmas sleazery is what i get from the picture. So something upbeat... but a bit like the background music for a porno involving Frank Gallagher from Shameless.
When it comes down to it - there's no real difference. They're both boxes that you stick a bass lead in one end and a speaker lead out of the other ..... and you end up getting a deep tone. There are plenty of good, brilliant, band and terrible examples of both. Just a case of finding a bass amp that you like the look, sound and features of - that also fits your budget. Best bit is to get out there and test 'em, listen to 'em on ebay, read the reviews etc.
That's a bit of an over-simplification? I have an amp that i like, i just wanted to know more about the internals and how they operate. -

Same issue with my leg BTW. did a real number on it last night get well soon! -

valve and solid state- what's the difference?
MiltyG565 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Amps and Cabs
In simple terms most amps have a pre amp to amplify the tiny voltage the guitars pickup creates, that amplified signal goes to the eq section of the amps controls but is still only a smallish voltage, too small to power a decent speaker at least so it then goes to the power amp usually controlled by the master volume knob. So you could have a solid state pre amp and power amp (solid state) a valve pre amp and valve power amp (all valve) Or a combination of the two usually valve pre amp and solid state power amp. Just to confuse you my ShuttleMax 9.2 has both a solid-state pre amp and eq and a valve powered eq which can be selected on their own or mixed together, that signal then goes to a 900 watt solid state (class D) power amp. It's one of the most flexible all in one amps ever made not just a solid-state pre amp with a valve that can be added in for effect like most amps. As the amplifier sections are seperate you can use the same preamp and eq controls with any size power amp hence all the versions of the same amp but bigger output models. The main reason valve pre amps exist is taste, a valve can give a more natural and sometimes fuller sound, it can also be easily overdriven to create just the right ammount of distortion at the lower volume before going to the power amp so you can have a bit of dirt even at practice volumes. Does that help?
Yes, that helps immensely, thank you How is the wrist these days? -
Ok, so i know what the difference between a valve state amp and a solid state amp is. A valve state amp uses the valves to amplify the input sound, while a solid state uses clever circuitry to amplify the sound, right? So that's all fine and dandy and honky dorey. So would anybody explain what a few more amp parts and terms are please? Valve preamp. I know it's a preamp with a valve, but why? "All valve", how does this differ from valve preamp? Power amp. Just used to amplify without valves? Those are the only ones that i can remember right now, but any help would be great

Bass player by choice, or relegated guitarist?
MiltyG565 replied to Tuono's topic in General Discussion
as we know, guitarists like to think they are IT, and drummers are thick as a plank, bass is where it's at (I'm jesting of course, some of my best friends are drummers ) -
Good evening, Milty... I suppose you've considered taking off a bit of height from the bridge..? It's often easy enough to pop it out and reduce the underside (I nearly wrote 'bottom'..! ) by a 1/8" or so. Just a thought...
Oh yeah... the paint on this thing is THIN! I have chipped it many times with the common bumps that everyone has. Probably because it is non-laquered, just gloss coated.
