i think almost everything is going to lose value as soon as you buy it, and continue to lose value for a few years after that. if you are talking 10 years, maybe it will have started to recoup some of the value it lost by that stage, but i can't see many basses being worth alot more than what you paid for them after 10 years. maybe after 15 or 20 would make more of a return. but i think a good bass in itself is an investment (especially if you are a session musician). think of it like this (and you probably already do) - whatever bass you are going to buy new, it looks great, and it plays great, maybe it allows you to create and play some cool fast riffs and fills. it sounds different from your other basses, so it gives you a bit more versatility in your styles and sounds. i couldn't really be bothered to list loads of reasons here, but i'm sure you can think of plenty more. but all those things could be a defining factor in getting work, therefore, buying a new bass is already an investment. I consider my lessons an investment. well, that's how i justify my purchases.... and i'm not even a session musician.
Been dealing with Strings Direct for years. Never any problems, always quick delivery even to N.Ireland.
seconded! i have put orders in to them in the early hours of friday mornings before, and come home from work on a saturday to find a lovely fresh set of strings waiting for me not once have i had an issue, and the prices are great! and it seems this is the general consensus. i have massive respect for a company like this, working for a company operating in the same way. (i suppose i empathise with the guys who work there ). although i do still like to get my strings locally sometimes, just to support local music shops. i would go to strings direct for something other than ernie balls or rotosound though.
Not sure how it works but doesn't the "I just sold all my gear to my mate (heres the receipt) and I put it all up my nose. So, ill be needing some time in rehab which is quite costly" story help with the emotional blackmail of divorce culls? I may be naive but they'd need guns and axes to part me with my gear against my will.
they can burn mine with me, or put it in my coffin, either way, its coming with me!

hi, and welcome! I take lessons myself, and i can say that there is no one thing that will make a teacher good. everyone learns differently, so a good teacher for someone might not be a good teacher for you. for me personally, i get along really well with my teacher, and we have a laugh in our lessons, and he really takes things in small steps to makes sure i learn right, and i play well. the most important thing he taught me, and i agree with him 100%- If you are going to learn a song, listen to it, not just once or twice, but a lot of times. know that bassline in your head before you try and play it. it's good advice. also, when you are learning a song, go through it, pick out the parts that are difficult, then learn them slowly. breaking it down like that lets you absorb the information better, and after working out the difficult parts of a song slowly, playing it through will feel like second nature after a while. don't try and punch above your weight. as a red hot chili peppers fan, i couldn't suggest much of their stuff for a beginner. flea tends to have quite fast or intricate baselines- not ideal for a beginner. you could try a simplified version of by the way that i use though. it wont be much use for playing along with the track. don't make the mistake of trying to teach yourself from videos on youtube. it will not help you starting out. you will need someone to point out where you are going wrong, how to improve your technique- you don't get this from a guy on youtube. think of those videos are tabs- they cant teach you anything unless you are at that level, it can only tell you what notes to play to play that song. i have said a lot of "don't do this blah blah blah"- but starting out, i wish i had realised the importance of music theory. a little goes a long way. you will pick up things like scales without knowing you are doing it (don't worry, that can take a while without studying theory). it is very useful for improvising and creating songs, and also jams. being able to recognise a few guitar chords could go a long way. obviously this is a lot of information, and i don't want to put you off, much the opposite, but i think these things are quite important. i took lessons for a few months when i started out, then i ran out of money, so i just learned by myself, and that was fine, i was playing songs that i like, but i didnt fully understand quite alot of it, and when i returned to lessons, i realised i had done myself a dis-service, as i had developed very little as a musician. i have been getting lessons now again since june, and i have developed far more in those 4 months than i did the entire year before. so its worth sticking at it! that was a lot, but the MOST important thing of all- ENJOY IT! no point being a musician if you don't enjoy it (it takes work, but you will get there )

wow, its a shame there are some people out there with a mangled mind ready to take advantage of someone with manners and morals. i think there is a bit of a difference between hitting a woman, and stopping her from hitting you, afterall, in that case they would pretty much be banking on that you were too much of a gent to fight back. glad you are rid now though. i dont think i could ever sell my gear for something like this. i tend to hang on to some pretty boring things, just incase something bad happens and i can't pay off my laptop or something, then i can blow it out, but i could never sell anything good.
When I had a cull (my only bass - an EB3) it was because I HAD got married and in her view only whooremaisters (= blokes out for a sh*g) play in bands. My bass & guitar buying days really started after the divorce................ so you've got a lot to look forward to!
wow, how did you put up with that? sounds a bit..... mental :/
Mine only cost 129e, fabulous neck, lovely sound!
yes, i remember reading that when you were considering buying it. thats good money, in any economy. i should take a trip down south and check some music places out down there. but the last time i was down, some lady on a bus tried to accuse me of going down south for cheap diesel. she completely missed the fact that i was on a bus.

wow, these are some sweet jazz's. i always had a thing against cheap jazz's, because any one i ever played had a horrible neck and looked like feck all, but i can see that i have just been unlucky! (thats on the point of the farida) i should have photos of my new jazz bass up soon, as soon as i can bolt it all together.

yes i have had that problem with pots before. it isn't necessarily a fault with the pot. your pots are actually probably fine. try some contact cleaner. also, what resistance are they? 500? i'm not an expert by any means, but it sounds like you should have a taper pot. just what i have found from my personal trail and error. hang onto the pots you take out of it

and as a side note, being bassists, we feel the notes. doesn't matter if we are deaf, you cant feel the high notes of the 6 string guitar. just a little benefit of being a bassist

i have had tinnitus all my life. i was born 90% deaf, which was thankfully mostly correctable, but i have always suffered from poor hearing. tinnitus is not correctable, if you have it, you have to live with it. it will get worse with age, thats just the way it is, it isnt always a condition of not protecting your hearing, but as you get older, you will get tinnitus, and it will get more prominent with age. i have been unlucky enough to get it at a very young age, which could render me practically deaf by the time i am 70. the only thing you can do now is to try your best to protect your hearing from now on. clubs and concerts are really not good for your hearing, and you look and feel like a bit of a pratt going to these places with ear defenders in. best thing to do in those cases is probably try and stay somewhere that isn't as loud as the rest of the place, or go outside for a break every so often.

i have used parcel force before. i find the prices aren't too bad, and i have had no issues. usually not too bad about time keeping. (although they don't allow you to select a pick up time any earlier than 2pm).
