got to say, i love flea, and those modulus's have a really cool meaty sound. but i dont think getting a flea bass is the way to go to get that sound. he doesnt use them that much, and when he does, they are probably pretty well equiped, and the pick of the bunch i would think. upgrade your jazz bass. remember he used a stack knob jazz for stadium arcadium, and also for most of the stadium arcadium tour. if he can acheive a flea sound with a jazz bass, so can you! (disregarding that he is flea, and what he decides to play dictates what a flea sound is).

the downside to buying a 'good' bass....
MiltyG565 replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Bass Guitars
luckily, i work for chain reaction cycles (very big operation) and i saved a box from the crushy at lunchtime. later realised we had a TV box from a while ago that probably would have done. this is on the marketplace for anyone interested, and a little bit more description on there. -

I have this OLP MM2 (its the tobacco burst one on the left). It's a lovely player, and the neck is brilliant for a bass of this price. it has had a new pickup recently installed, and new pots. One of the pots does nothing, as the pickup couldnt be wired so that one volume pots controls one coil, so the middle pot controls the volume solely. The tone pot functions as normal. The body has had something spilled on the laquer, but this comes off with a gentle scrape, and i will take care of this as best i can before the sale. the body has no other damage that i can see. but the important part, the neck, is in remarkable condition. very little fret ware and can be set with quite low action for easy playing. it has a matching headstock, and the original tuners are still in good condition, but require oil every month or 2. it will be sold with any parts belonging to it if wanted. when installing the new pickup, i made a bit of an error in filing the scratch plate to make room for it, so there is a bit of a gap at the bottom of the pickup now. very solid, and little used bass with upgraded pickups and pots for just £160. would make a great backup bass, or just for a project, or someone looking to do the whole "lets go mad with stickers and pens all over my bass" on it. it can wear many hats (no to mention it looks fecking awesome) I'm in northern ireland (i read the shipping thread, thankfully i work for a pretty major bike company who i hope will let me have a box to ship in) if you want more pictures, that is not a problem, i just couldnt be fecked to host them all online, so send me an email and i can send more to you. "]. Missing 2 control knobs and needs strings. i was going to replace these before the sale, but cant afford to at this price. i can ship, but you (the buyer) MUST organise the courier. payment can be sent to me via paypal. £120. Thanks. Milty.

the downside to buying a 'good' bass....
MiltyG565 replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Bass Guitars
that one has an all-parts pickup. its a little better than the standard one, but the neck is far better than the other one. the intonation is 100%. im going to throw it onto the marketplace and see what happens where would you get a box or something to ship it in? -

i like it too, but it has to make room, and im not in a band right now, so i cant really afford to have 3 basses kicking about (picking up another bass tomorow.) you interested Mcnach? -

It's the one on the right (incase you hadn't guessed). this was before the new pots and pickup went in, but this photo is about a 4-6 weeks old, and i have never gigged it. hard to tell from this photo, but there are small dings around the body in various places, but it doesnt really take away from the spectical of it -

its quite possible i have an OLP going up for sale tomorow. gives quite a good musicman tone, new pickups and pots installed, body has a few dings, but the neck is lovely. bit of an odd colour though. hm........ -

speaking of endorsments, i would happily endorse any good cider company. although i feel i should be on the alcoholics anonymous forum for that. i will also happily endorse bass in general. and sleep. goodnight
But if its from the power amp how does he get it into our ears?
magic. will that do?

the variables are massive at every gig. i saw them in the 02 in dublin, and it was fantastic. open air at croke park was rubbish. the sound didnt travel well. also i was seated which was just wrong for so many reasons. there was definatly a noticable difference in the sound of the amp (btw, amps are heads, not cabs) be that down to room size, PA setup, where the audio was recorded from, how far jupiter was from the sun, etc etc. theres a million reasons why it could have sounded different, but i would believe that it was to do with the fact that he was using acoustic amps and cabs, and notthe GK's, which he returned to after using the acoustic amps and cabs for only a month or 2. heres another point to do with endorsements- if flea endorsed acoustic amps, and i had heard gallien krueger amps, i would probably take the GK's. unless i was trying to match his sound exactly.

yeah, saw it on that rig rundown. congratulations, sir. you have been the first person to out-flea me!

calm down stringrayPete1977. i dont claim to be a tech wizard, far from it, as you should have known from me stating "i dont know what you meant by class D head". even still, with either head, acoustic or GK, through the PA, there is a notable difference in sound, and not just the quality lost from it coming through the PA. i wasnt close at all, as i said i was pretty far away. no, i have never noticed that little clip on mic, no matter how much i stare. i have live at slane, never seen it, it must be microscopic. i WILL look into it, but i have never noticed it. im new to the game dude, you cant expect me to know it all already.

yeah, his heads are rack mounted, in a rack. they sit behind the cabs. his amps are quite loud. i was sitting pretty far away from the cabs at croke park, and when the tech was testing, i could still hear his cabs (nott he PA, it had been muted at this point). so maybe the vibrations coming from his cabs is the reason why they keep them in a rack? i dontknow what you mean by a class D head, but i did question before if the cabs actually did anything or were just there for the look. but i have witnessed that they do actually do something. his cabs arent mic'd up, i assume the heads are plugged straight into the PA. i was able to tell the difference in the sound by going and finding videos of him using the acoustics, then comparing that to the videos of him using the GK's. i did make sure the watch a few of each, just to make sure it wasnt just bad sound quality on part of the person who uploaded it. i know that youtube sound quality is absolute dung, but it did work. anyway, i found your post a bit confusing, thats why i rambled on a bit :/

I would love to try a GK amp. and i would probably buy one after that (assuming i have won the lottery at this stage). i first noticed GK amps when i saw flea using them live in dublin last november. I think flea has a fantastic tone, which of course isnt down solely to his bass amp, but it obviously doesnt make it any worse. he had used acoustic amps shortly before november, and i listened, and it didnt allow the transfer of tone from the bass through the amp as easily as the GK did. so to me, him being endoresed by GK clearly does work. i was willing to do a bit of reasearch into it, and see if it was really all that. but i think you are missing a trick here ThomBassmonkey. you should just be telling people that the head you use is one better than flea's of the red hot chili peppers (i believe he uses the 1001RB series heads)

i have to say, building a bass from an old violin that he found in a dumpster while looking for his dinner, slapping a bass neck on it and a set of P pickups, then calling it art and saying it costs £2400 is just the height of stupidty. for one, "art" isnt a functional thing. if it is art, hang it on the wall. the problem with that is, everyone you invite into your living room will have to gouge out their eyes. so it isnt art. also, he says that he is economical with technique, in this case, crafting. ok, so he built a bass from an old viola, but he couldnt be fecked to put the time and effort and skill into making it at least look good? im not one to be fussy over the looks of a bass, but at that price, it needs to be at least well designed. nobody give that man £2400, it isnt art, and he would be making about £2350 from that horrible thing.

Other strings ringing out when slapping strings
MiltyG565 replied to Sman1992's topic in Repairs and Technical
i think because the whole tone of the bass comes from air inside the timber vibrating, it will eventually cause the other strings to vibrate a bit as the whole bass moves, not just the strings you hit. the only thing you can do is learn how to mute them while slapping. sometimes i mute the E and A strings with the bottom of my right hand, and the higher strings with my left hand.
