Why does every 'New Bass Day' rapidly turn into 'More Work Day' where I'm involved? π I've got some deep red calligraphy ink coming to stain the two wings with, as I've always liked the Arias and Westones with that look. I went through all sorts of colours but have just gone for classic red. I'm just not sure whether to do the headstock red. A matched headstock would be great but the centre neckthrough part will be natural on the body so feels like it should be natural on the headstock. Off to look at pictures.

I didn't really play it much after it arrived before ripping it apart, I knew I wanted a reverse P. The EA side is only around half a pickups width further towards the bridge, as the whole unit moved towards the neck after the reverse, so hadn't really changed that much. A tad more focused maybe but that could be in my head. The DG though is a world of difference, much fuller and warmer sounding. That slightly underwhelming, tinny G string that you usually get on a P, actually most basses, is now a full on meaty G. It just balances much better. In fact I need to lower the DG and raise the EA as it's now, if anything, slightly overpowering. But I think that's just getting the pickup heights set properly as it's all in fresh holes now. I think it will really come into its own in a band setting where normally the G gets a little lost. The Who's 'The Real Me' should sound epic now.

I'd guess that's a normal one which you could bend the connectors on, being that it's mounted in a plate like that. A barrel one is usually mounted in a single hole bored through the side of the body.

Ha ha, I said was annoying me. It was just in the way all the time and I'm not having a ponytail or a f'ing 'manbun'. There was a lot of hair in the bin by the time I'd finished. π -

Not only in the gents, but on stage too. π -
I love all sorts of finishes but always end up at vintage white with a black scratchplate. Classic and classy. ππ

I can't remember what I read, but aren't those two just backups? -
I just about to do the same to my reverse 424. Just need to set the action and intonation, but it's already pretty good and sounds great.

Why did I look at that blue one and go, "Ooh that's nice"? I only sold my 5GS last year that hadn't used in ten years. π

This is Peter Hook. The Joy Division/New Order cow poop Top Trumps is second only to The Sex Pistols. And I say that as a passionate fan. π -
I've had a bit of a look at around at 3rd Avenue instruments and all seems OK really. Mainly good reviews, admittedly from beginners so may not be know any better, but certainly nothing bad. I completely understand the need to pay on finance and this is limiting your choice. The thing to remember about modern budget instruments is that, with modern machining, they are far far better than the budget instruments that folks here are comparing them to from the 80s. Today's budget instruments can be made very playable with an hours tinkering if you know what you're doing, but taking it to someone for a set up, as has been mentioned earlier by someone, costs money. I would happily give it a set up myself but I'm down in Cornwall, but maybe there is a kind soul local to you on here that would just give it a few tweaks to make it easier to learn on. It may not need anything though. Personally, in your circumstances, I'd buy the package and then put a post on here asking if there's anyone local who could give the bass a once over and adjust anything that needs it. I'm sure there'd be someone willing to help out. If you were able to buy without paying by installments then I'd look at Harley Benton basses from a German company called Thomann and put a package together myself. It would cost the same but the bass would probably be a better bass. But only probably as I've never played a 3rd Avenue bass, they might be just as good. Whatever you go for, best of luck getting it sorted and it's a great thing you're doing. ππ Edit, Bassassin posted the same thing at the same time.

I wouldn't have thought that racing stripes would work on an f hole style bass, and yet they do, especially with the f holes picked out in matching white. Nice one. ππ

I'm a panel beater, but also have a compressor and set up at home. At work is easier though as I can't bake at home.
