1. Mine was £279 from GAK, was a while ago now though. £244 is definitely cheap
2. Yes on the coneheads soundtrack, which I bought just for that song. Lovely laid back groove, one of their finest moments.
3.
Someone will have to step up to the plate. Cometh the hour, cometh the question: "Which castors are best for metal?"
Which metal is best for casters? As far as I know the casters won't lift the cab high enough to stop boundary reinforcement so won't make any difference to sound.
4. I'm confused. Are your ports now going straight through the cab now if they stick out the back? If so then you cab is now sealed again just with a smaller internal area surely, unless I've misunderstood you, which is quite likely .
5. I'm no expert but I think the port can can have bends in it, if the cab isn't deep enough for the needed port length it can have a right angle bend in it and go up, down or sideways, whichever is most convenient. Hopefully someone can confirm that .
6. How can a man go on stage wearing satin flares? Sounds like great fun. One of my old bands morphed into a glam band, the singer complained we weren't getting enough gigs so we went down the glam route, booked a load of gigs and the singer then walked out because it was too big a commitment. Have fun
7.
After reading this thread I had google for a pedal documentary, expecting there to be some kind of "History of..." deal, but I was rather disappointed. The best I could find was: Cry Baby: The Pedal That Rocks The World Fuzz: The Sound That Revolutionized The World Beautiful Noise (About the shoegaze scene in the 90s- looks great, but not what I went looking for.)
I think a book on the history of effects and how they came about would be really interesting, I don't know how much call for it there would be though. A lot of effects seem to be the by product of something else.
8. I'm by no stretch of the imagination an encyclopedia on doublebass, but I've found that whilst boosting mids on electric bass really helps cut through, doing the same on doublebass just produces a very 'boxy' sound which doesn't sound nice. I'm using Innovation Rockabillys and going for that traditional thud, rather than bright jazzy kind of sound. Whether that helps you or not I don't know.
9. I put some money in the bank last year but when I drew it out last week it wasn't my money, I put two fifty pence pieces in but they gave me a pound coin. Same thing isn't it? Landlord has a collection for the band and then gives the band their money Might not be the same coins and notes but you got your money. I can see how it might make you feel but it's up to the LL how he gets the money for your fee. Without any more information you have to just accept that he paid you your fee and everyone, including you had a great night. Job done!
10. Massively off topic but I could link this thread and the 'what's your karaoke song' thread with 'Antiprocrastination Song' by Stormtroopers Of Death .
11. The good thing with a Fender style bass is that if anything is wrong with it loads of companies make replacement parts. If it has issues you will have your 'not as described' get out of jail card but you will get stung for return postage. I wouldn't worry unduly but you have to weigh up the savings against peice of mind with anything second hand. Buying from a member on here or a shop may be preferable if you're concerned.
12. I think the chances of buying a warped bass is relatively small if you're sensible. I've bought and sold loads but never bought one with a warped neck. Where are you thinking of buying from?
13. Whilst in traffic on the way home my idle mind started wandering. What order were effects invented/discovered in and do you think there are any left to be invented. As things like the wah effect were discovered by accident (messing about with a tone control made a noise like the mute on a trumpet I seem to remember), I assume there must be sounds that are waiting to be stumbled upon but I wonder what they could be, or do you think everything's been done. Presumably before the late seventies nobody had dreamt of a sound like a synth so what's the next big thing, and what was the last big breakthrough in effects pedal sounds, probably was the synth pedal I suppose. What was the first effect, chorus, reverb or delay maybe? Too many questions, educate me
14. Your speaker cab is haunted by the ghost of Jimmy Saville. If it's not that then I don't know, a jangly noise sounds very strange.
15. I assume it was meant to be a homage to Hendrix kind of thing as he is a big fan, he has a tattoo of Hendrix on his shoulder. I love early Chili Peppers but was bad, and I really don't like saying that.
16. I'm not familiar with the Loudbox but you can put any instrument you like through any amp you like. Whether it'll sound good is another matter, if it sounds good then it is good. As for damaging the amp or speakers, you'll have to use your ears for that, if the speakers are farting with the bass then it's not so good. Basically if it's not distorting in the bad way and it sounds good then go for it.
17. It's just playing behind the beat.........and in front of it, just to the right of it, miles to left of it, around the corner, up the road and hiding behind the dustbins from it, but amazingly never actually on the beat
18. I can never remember any songs we do. Other person: What sort of music do you play? Me: Er, I can't really remember. Cue me looking like a dick. I was once, bizarrely, singing a random song in my head that an audience comment made me think of. While singing along in my head I was thinking why's no one started the next song? Yep, I was supposed to start the next song. Note to self, must pay more attention to our bands music.
19. Firstly, I love this build, right up my street Secondly, does the control plate have to be chromed/silver? I can quite see it painted a gloss aged cream sort of colour, with the warm tones being ever so slightly brown rather than yellow to complement the natural wood. If something else was picked out in the same colour I think it could look ace, much better than a second rate chrome effect. Make a feature of it rather than not being happy with a make do solution. Whatever you decide I still love the build
20. Am I the only one who doesn't like a grippy strap?
21. I used to do this using my Line6 X3, I can't remember the settings but being able to run two signal paths through it meant I could have a clean, punchy bass, and a massively overdriven, crunchy tone together. You can run both tones through different preamps, eqs, amp and speaker sims to get the sound as crisp or muddy as you want. I used to love doing it because the bass sounded huge
22. I used our guitarists floor pedal version last week with my doublebass, it did the G OK, struggled with the D but got there in the end but it couldn't even register the A and E. Hopeless for bass.
23. I've found that everything needs to be exaggerated on stage, a normal/small movement goes unnoticed, the same with facial expression changes. Lighting from above doesn't help either, the usual coloured lights aiming downwards create shadows under the eyes and mouth which can make you look like you're frowning. If you can watch a recording of the band you'd be surprised at how stationary a band can look even when they think they're jigging around.
24. If Dad's criteria is correct then those in the above link will be more than enough, higher wattage and higher colour temperature meaning a whiter light.
