1. After a quick strip down it was put to one side whilst I decided on colour etc. The side binding had been removed by the previous owner when they painted it and although are easy to get hold of, they have a tendency to lift off around the internal curves of the horns so I decided on a different plan. I decided it would be a light mint green with silver metalflake binding and a thin black line separating the two. Natural wood neck and a body coloured head stock. Possibly silver metalflake the scratchplate but unsure yet. That was a few months ago and yesterday I decided to crack on as I have some spare time over Christmas. I sanded the body back to a mustard coloured coat that was under the naff white paint that it had been refinished in previously, as I've never seen what these basses are made of looks like I didn't want to sand too far and cause myself problems. I've never really understood why other folks take off all the coatings right down too the bare wood. The colour, yes if you are worried about chipping it and the previous colour showing through, but the clear sealer under the colour (which is usually a pig to remove) just causes grief when trying to cover the woods grain with primer, just leave it on and save yourself a whole load of agro, anyway back to the Dano. On to the neck, under the white the same mustard colour was found but under that was seafoam green, which made me think that the mustard could've been a primer/sealer used by the previous painter as it was that sort of colour. Then when the headstock was sanded the Danelectro logo appeared on top of the mustard coat so now I'm not sure, maybe it was seafoam green and then finished in mustard at the factory before sale as Fender used to do, or maybe the mustard was a refinish but there was no signs of a decal being on the green coat, which hadn't been removed so who knows? 2. For a while I had been thinking about trying a Danelectro Longhorn and then I managed to snag one on ebay for around the hundred quid mark (can't quite remember now). It was one of the 90's reissues with the round control knobs, that are supposed to be better than the later chicken head knob reissues, but who knows? I was happy to refinish it if needed so wasn't too fussed about cosmetic condition which led me to buying this thing of beauty. The owner had badly painted it white and hand painted some roses on it, but mechanically it was solid so to speak. Obviously I tried it out when it arrived and even with it's old strings, of which the E string was kinked, it sounded amazing, bright snappy and clanky to warm and mellow, I really liked it and they are unbelievably light. Here it is, Close up of the roses, which are actually very nicely painted but really don't belong on a bass,
3.
I don't recall ever seeing that with a double bass
You've never been to see Type O Negative then. Singer Pete Steele would play one whilst standing in guitar fashion, he was a towering bloke though.
4. I keep toying with the idea of a Rick 4005 copy off there. I love the look and sound of them but at about 10k I won't be owning one ever. I'd even considered making one but buying a neck as I don't think I could do that part justice, but this could be a good starting point. I'd refinish it as I want cream with black binding and scratchplate so even moving the pickups to the correct position would be doable, plus the neck would have the sharkfin inlays. Hmmm, I'll be keeping a keen eye on developments.
5.
Hope they can play better than their appalling use of Grammer
Terrible, isn't it? Oh, and I think you meant grammar. Good luck to them I say.
6. When I was using the Harley Benton I just set the amps controls and forgot about it, if you used a preamp pedal you could tweak that if you must fiddle There's no controls on a doublebass so I didn't worry.
7.
Is that the one with a pub as the main set and Eric Clapton and Albert Lee guesting? Both Chas and Dave are top players who make their excellent playing look effortless and anyone who doesn't know about Chas Hodges musical pedigree might be surprised if they look it up.
That's the one. And yes, I seem to remember that Chas leant his piano chops watching Jerry Lee Lewis while touring with him as Jerry's bassist.
8. Chas 'n' Dave Christmas special on Channel 5 right now. Very dated but I'm loving it.
9. Chaotic Dischord - Cliff Richard http://youtu.be/y_Pfy-BrIUY
10. Thinking about it, that line was about John Doe. It was something about, funk it up Fishbone. Weren't Firehose mentioned in the same song?
11.
Good Time Boys (RHCP) mention Fishbone, took me ages to remember the song title!
"And if you don't believe me you can ask Fishbone".
12.
Anyone know which came first in a lot of the more well-known cases - e.g., did Iron Maiden/Black Sabbath, etc write the song first, then decide it would be a good band name?
Black Sabbath took their name from a film that was playing in the cinema opposite their rehearsal place. Apparently they wanted to play music that scared you like a horror film.
13.
Jackie Wilson Said
The folks at TOTP thought it was about Jockey Wilson
14. Depending on who you believe, Tearjerker by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers is apparently about Kurt Cobain.
15. If you don't need the onboard preamps headphone feature then I can heartily recommend bypassing the the preamp by wiring the pickup straight to the output jack socket. My onboard preamp just added hiss and a general lack of depth to the sound, its much better using a preamp pedal or just straight to the amp, both my Ashdowns and Phil Jones amps like the signal direct without the need for a pedal. I put a strip of rubber under the bridge and the only other thing needed was to slightly bend the wire scroll on the tailpeice to stop them vibrating together. Loads of warm thump and depth.
16. Better call the Karma Police if stuff has been nicked
17. I've bought s/h doublebass strings to see what suits me and my bass. At £150 and upwards it's expensive to buy new strings just to bin them after a couple of rehearsals/gigs if they don't suit.
18. In one of my bands there are two acoustic guitars and a doublebass, I know which instrument draws the most attention.
19. 80's/90's American punk has a good supply. Pennywise Bad Religion Green Day I'm sure there's lots more.
20. That old dam story doesn't hold water.
21. Ooh a year of birth bass. I could never own a bass that looked like cheese on toast though.
22.
Source?
From memory it's in Jon Savages book 'England's Dreaming' and in John Lydons autobiography.
23. Isn't that how they came by most of their gear back the early Pistols days?
24.
It's like eating peas with your knife. You can do it but if you have any class, you shouldn't.
I eat my peas with honey, I've done it all my life, It makes my peas taste funny, But keeps them on the knife. Spike Milligan
25. One of the funniest things I've had go wrong was years ago. We had no money and I'd rigged up our cheapo, secondhand lights to a homemade footswitch that when pressed it would switch off the normal coloured lights and switch on the smoke machine and strobe behind the drumkit, we used it mainly for our cover of Overkill by Motorhead. It got to that point in the song for strobe and smoke to accompany the drums (if you know the song you'll know where I mean), so I over enthusiastically stomp on the switch and break it with the smoke and strobe going, I couldn't turn it off without unplugging from the wall at the end of the song, by which time the stage and most of the dance floor had completely disappeared from sight. The crowd loved it, nobody had a seizure and it was our last song so it all ended well but it did take quiet a while to clear enough to be able to see anything You don't always need double of everything, just make sure what you do have is suitable for the task
