1.
JJ who has still got a killer sound (at least in 2011) when saw him last. The guy from Elvis Costellos Attractions - great technique. Norman of Blockheads fame - quite groovy form this genre. Never really enjoyed Foxton though lots have included him. For me his tone wasn't great - technique nothing special - haircut by mum.
Excellent Tone........ not great. Technique.......nothing special. Haircut.........by Mum.
2. Suzi Quattro, but that's the singer thing again.
3.
There are a lot of myths about humbucker vs single coils, most of which can be largely dispelled by browsing you tube and watching people playing Slayer or Metallica riffs on telecasters or pristine sounding Gilmour or Clapton solos on Les Pauls.
A bit like bassists claiming they can only play certain music on certain basses
4.
When it comes down to it, I have never met a half decent bass player (regardless of genre) in the real world who isn’t a Jaco fan or at least appreciative of his contribution to music / modern bass playing.
And another insinuation that if you aren't a fan or don't appreciate Jacos contribution then you can't even be a half decent player. The comments of others, in and out of the music business, would suggest I'm at least a half decent player yet Jaco has never registered on my radar. I have, since this thread, listened to him but along with Stanley Clarke his music makes me whince. Whether he's 'all that' or not I don't care, but you don't have to to be a 'half decent player'. Most of the players held up as 'bass gods' on heres music ranges from being strongly disliked by me to making me recoil when I hear it, bar a couple, but that's not a problem as there's masses of other music for me to enjoy.
5.
Maybe we should now wait and see if, after subsequent listening, the OP thinks any differently.
Oh how very considerate of you. I say burn him, stone him, tie him up and chuck him in a river, give him a chinese burn, I dunno, let's do something. My torch is lit and my pitchfork sharpened.
6.
I'm on an android phone which isn't letting me view imbedded videos at the moment
My phone updated the android software yesterday and a the vids are back again Oh and I'll throw in Cannonball by The Breeders too.
7. How far in timescale can we go before we open the debate of what is and isn't punk? Although I'm sure aseemingly innocent thread wouldn't descend into a school playground bitching contest on here So with that in mind I'm going to nominate Matt Freeman and Fat Mike, both firm favourites with me.
8. Obviously I don't know, but I'm wondering if the OP is thinking that the higher the ohms rating of a cab the more damage it could do. If this is the case then it's the other way around, going below the stated amp rating causes damage not above,a four ohm load is as low as you want to go, eight will be fine. If my thought isn't the case then I apologise.
9. I have quite a craving for a Danelectro Longhorn in gold sparkle but can't really justify buying one, so it would be nice to wake up to one after the big man has emptied his sack.
10. Bloody autocorrect. That'll be Freebass, not Freemans
11. Freemans had three bassists (Peter Hook, Andy Rourke and Mani) and Primary by The Cure was two basses with no keys or guitars.
12. So sorry for the delay, we'd only rehearsed last night for reasons only known to a guitarist. Unfortunately there are no labels or markings in the case.
13. True, true.
14. So it's not marketing gone mad then, more marketing done quite well.
15. "Art meets guitar"? Chop saw meets guitar more like!
16. I have the Hidersine one, can't compare it with anything else but if a more expensive one has a lot thicker padding then I don't want it as it would be too bulky. I've been using mine for about three years for gigs and rehearsals once or twice a week and it shows no signs of wear at all, I'm not too precious with it either, it's there to do a job so if it gets a bit abused then so be it. I really can't fault it, not just great for the money but great full stop.
17.
That has to be the worst. A band with not enough material having to flesh out a show!
Agreed. I saw Stiltskin at The Cooperage in Plymouth after their one hit. They only had enough material for a very short set and then had to repeat a couple as an encore. The gig was alright really but if you're going to tour the country please learn enough songs to play for an hour without repeating.
18. We've had the 'Who did you see last live' and 'Who's the worst band you've seen live' threads. Inspired by these two, let's hear about the gigs you didn't think would be great but turned out amazing. You know the ones you went to reluctantly with mates, or your other halves favourite band that you agreed to see, or the festival ones you've stumbled upon. To start you off with The Cult at Bristol academy in 2011, I'd always liked The Cult but hadn't bought anything of theirs since Sonic Temple, I saw they were touring again and it was only about £15 a ticket so Mrs. M and myself decided to go, it was only in weeks time and had sold out, bugger! Thought I'd have a quick look on ebay and a nice chap was selling two tickets at face value as he couldn't go, result. I wasn't expecting much, maybe the result of a low ticket price, small venue tour and the fact the Ian Astbury was touring with the doors previously and I thought The Cult were long gone but I was blown away. Astburys voice was still as good as in the eighties, Duffys big white Gretsch sounded amazing and the whole atmosphere in the small venue was brilliant. My wife just had a similar experience at the Alice Cooper show in Plymouth, she doesn't know any AC apart from what she's heard through me and wasn't fused at all about going, but she thoroughly enjoyed it, more than me I think, she hasn't stopped telling people about it. So go on then, let's hear your surprise 'best gigs'.
19. I had one of the Thomann anniversary ones in my basket while I pondered whether I actually needed it. . . . and then they sold out.
20.
I absolutely LOVE Hanoi Rocks and Michael Monroe. I've seen them a few times and they always deliver. Never seen Michael on his own though.
He really really needed to invest in radio mic. He had a roadie running around the stage after him untangling his mic lead permanently. Very energetic, climbing all over the amps and PA, running around the stage and behind the drum riser and the roadie had to chase him around unhooking everything and everyone. Comical but bloody annoying for the rest of the band night after night I'd have thought
21.
I saw Whitesnake in Newcastle City Hall around '82.... . . . .
The only gig I've walked out of was Whitesnake in Plymouth (early nineties). Support act were supposed to be Pride And Glory and being an Ozzy fan I agreed to go with a a couple of mates, Zakk Wylde and James LoMenzo should be good I thought. Pride And Glory didn't show so I was already peed off and then Whitesnake came on. After about fifteen minutes of tediousness they did that solo sh*te, everyone but guitar went offstage and a five minute guitar solo ensued, I made it though that but then the same happened with bass, then drums. I don't know how long the drum solo lasted because we all walked out after five minutes and went on the piss instead. The only positive I can scrape out of all that solo crap is that at all David Coverstory wasn't wailing away flatly in a can't really be arsed to be here style over all of it.
22. I saw Alice Cooper a couple of weeks ago in Plymouth doing one of two warm up gigs for the Motley Crue tour. I didn't know if he'd do the full theatrical show as it was a warm up and whether he'd even still have it in him. I needn't have worried, he did the full show with all the bells and whistles and was completely on top of his game. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Michael Monroe was support (Hanoi Rocks) and that excellent as well, straight back to the eighties, great fun.
23.
Women! They should stick to buying handbags or candles or what ever it is they need !
I once complained about the amount of shoes and boots my wife has telling her "You only have one pair of feet, how many shoes do you need?" To which I was told "You only have one pair of hands, how many basses do you need?" Well that was me told!
24. Oh yes, my suggestion is purely home use only, just thought I'd throw it in the mix as an option as money seems tight.
25. Behringer monitors, http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Behringer-MS40-Active-Studio-Monitor-Speakers-inc-1-Year-Warranty-Slight-Damage-/172001785816?nav=SEARCH Something like this would give you your guitar/bass effects, I personally wouldn't worry about it being bass or guitar orientated if you need both, just get one with the effects you want http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-Multi-Effects-Pedal-Zoom-G2-1u-/262138094266?nav=SEARCH These headphones have got very good reviews. Almost the same as Phil Jones Bass headphones, soundwise virtually the same. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-H850-Over-Ear-Headphones-Black/dp/B0083DPIIA A couple of leads and you're good to go. I actually use my setup like as my main home hifi now as those monitors sound lovely.
