Having closely studied the pictures, they're bringing back memories, it is definitely my old bass. I can only apologise for what I did to it, I was young and knew no better, plus vintage basses weren't the fashion back then. I remember the scratchplate being very dark and the bass was originally 3tsb, everything I hated back then. I'm surprised it's still in exactly the same condition as I sold it in, must be twenty years ago. Where abouts are you (on my phone and location doesn't show), just wondering how far it's travelled.

Coldflows, I'm sure that's my old Antoria! Years ago when I knew nothing I was given this bass in a bag of bits. I had a Mini which I resprayed in two tone Arum White and Primrose yellow, a colour scheme I liked so much I used on this bass. If memory serves, I put a peice of tape over the headstock logo and carefully cut around the lettering, painted yellow then removed tape and lacquered over to give an even cover. The pickup neck pickup wouldn't work and as I knew diddly about these things back then I jammed an old strat pup in there and shifted it on to Cash Converters when they first opened in Plymouth hoping they wouldn't notice anything wrong. I got fifty quid for an old nail that played awfully and was given to me in bits so was happy, but since I've learned these things could be fixed easily I've always regretted it. So pleased it's turned up again, and still sporting the Austin Mini colour scheme.

My Perfect Ten Mini-rig did this a few weeks ago, blowing replacement fuses on power up. Looks like a common Ashdown fault then. Just need to find someone to look at it.

Evening all. I've been thinking about getting a professional set up on my Gedo lately, happy enough at the mo but would like to know I'm getting the best out of it, and I started thinking about the soundpost placement and the effect of different strings on it. Is there a optimum place for it regardless of what strings are fitted, ie a best place for the instrument, or will an instrument with low tension strings sound best with the soundpost in a slightly different place to a bass with high tension strings? I'd guess the post would need to be moved very slightly to a narrower area if low tension strings are used as there is less force being exerted on the post. Just wondered if it's considered best to find 'your string' before getting it set up by a good luthier. . . . . . Or am I just overthinking things? Oh and can anyone recommend a good bass luthier in the Devon/Cornwall area, I'm on the border. Thanks

That seller has been knocking out Dekos for a while. I was looking for a cheap P bass for a project and was going to get an HB, then I saw he was selling them cheaper than the Thomann retail price and he's just down the road so no postage,couldn't understand how until this thread came along.

Coincidentally I've been playing along to Numans 'I, assassin' lately. I'm very on and off with my fretless but I bought an acoustic fretless recent so I can just grab it when I have a minute. Not quite mastered the Partridge dance while playing 'Chameleons yet though.

Thread revival! I've just bought a sheet of the foam board to make a pair of these. I usually go through the PA and use my amp as a monitor but at a recent gig I had a weird problem in that when I plugged my DI box into the snake I got a loud buzzing out of my amp, dodgy electrics I reckon as I haven't had it before or since. Anyway I digress, this meant just using my amp to supply all the bass and I struggled with feedback a lot, gaffer tape over the f holes helped and the notch filter sorted it but I had the filter turned up so high I almost lost that frequency, making one certain note very dull, so I thought I'd give a pair of these a try. A gig in a couple of weeks is in a venue where we are lined up against a wall with the PA almost level with us due to space and I anticipate problems.

I don't know if it's been covered but why do people say something's "cheap at half the price"? Of course it bloody is, that would be half price, 50% off. Unless it was extremely overpriced to start with, which pretty much makes the saying the opposite of the reason people seem to say it.

I gigged for ten years only owning one bass, then the internet came along. I think it's not how many basses you need, more a question of how many tempting websites you don't need. I could do the whole of our next gig with a J or a P, active or passive, long or short scale, hollow or solid body, etc etc, and nobody would know any different. If I had to sell up nearly everything I'd keep a fretted and fretless as they'd do everything I need. Oh and my doublebass but I assume we're not counting that sort of thing.

I know it's different type of six string but when I wanted strings for my Bass VI I ordered them direct from LaBella. Just order all the individual strings you need to make your set, cheaper than a preamp packed set in the uk even after postage. All on their website so no need for an expensive phone call.

My fretted had the raised 17th fret issue but the fretless was faultless bar a minute mark on the top of the headstock, both were bought separately with nothing else in the basket so no need to send a good bass stamped as deko to keep a large orderer happy. Must be careful as I have a few basses in my basket at the mo for comparison reasons, a quick early morning deko buy could end up with a few thousand pounds worth of basses being ordered by mistake.

Just stop it! I mean what's wrong with you people? I have no need for another amp or any more basses. Well maybe just a quick look, I mean where's the harm in that?

[/quote] The trouble I find with my Variax is that, although the upright setting is convincing enough in a band, not being fretless makes it a lot less convincing. On DB I like to slide around a bit and transferring those songs onto the Variax is not a pleasing experience. I suppose what I'm saying is, it definitely needs to be fretless. I can get a very similar sound to the Variax out of a normal bass using the resonator setting on my cheapy Toneworks AX3A pedal, with a fretless it's really good. So maybe try an effect before buying a new bass.

Re the lined/unlined thing, I started with unlined and have never seen the issue, the side dots are all you see and need. And the plus is that unlined looks far nicer imo. It's not as difficult as it seems it would be, although if you're gigging the need to hear yourself clearly is more important.
