That fretless seems a right bargain. I don't know what they're worth but any fretless Yamaha has to be worth that. If it was closer I'd grab that.

This is what I was thinking. It should be far more noticeable unplugged as the string both sides of fretted fret are unamplified. Once plugged in it shouldn't really be audible as the side you want to hear is being amplified and the unwanted side isn't. Although any vibrations in the string will get picked up to a degree. Perhaps try fretting more lightly as the harder you fret a string the more like a 'hammer on' it is, causing a note ring out without plucking the string. Also as you've mentioned the other strings ringing out it could all be to do with muting the strings. Unmuted strings will vibrate in sympathy to fretted strings causing noise to be heard through the pickup/amplifier. I'd say it's all to do with technique rather than a set up issue.

Sorted the frets today. Surprisingly they were all pretty level with only three or four needing a tiny bit taken off to level them. A few have got string marks but to completely remove those I'd need to file the whole lot down and then re crown, far too tedious for this old bass. I've just levelled and polished them all. Scraped the board with a razor to clean it up a bit, it still needs an oiling and a buff but I think it'll look alright after that. It looks darker in real life than this picture. Also glued the nut back on. Also made the rear cavity cover, and I've glued the pickup casings. The pickups are resin filled so all I can do is run superglue in the cracks and flat and polish them up.

Is that just udder cream in a repackaged pot? I know a dairy farmer with lovely hands. 🧐 In a similar way I recommend the O'keefes Working Hands or whatever it's called. I don't normally buy into these TV advertised miracle cures. But due to my job I often great cracked fingers when the first really cold weather hits. In laws bought me some and, although I hate the feel of it on my hands, it really does work. I just leave it on as long as I don't have to do anything in the evening and then wash my hands as it always seems to feel damp. But even doing that it clears up my hands in a couple of days, without leaving them to soft to work with.

I like idea of the trough along the centre. There's always something in the way no matter how much room you've got.

The tuners are cleaned up the best I can and back on, and the neck looks surprisingly nice. Now here's the daft one. The cavity cover is a very poorly made black one. I thought I would had some single ply black sheet left from the BB424X scratchplate I made but I don't think there's enough. What I have got to hand is some pearloid bronze left from the Hofner Artist (yeah yeah, not finished either 😉). It kind of goes with the neck colours so would it be rediculous to make a rear cover from that, the front knobs are gold so all the colours tie together? Or stick with boring old black? 🤔

I'll go through them when I've got a hour or two and get some rough idea of price from ebay/discogs. I'll probably try the more valuable ones on ebay first at a decent price, if not I'll do a few bundles on facebook marketplace. Unless anyone on here is a collector. I'll pay my subs first. I'm not looking to make a load of money as it feels quite horrible picking through someone's belongings to see what's worth money. But if I just give them away then sure as hell someone else will make a profit. It would be nice to find someone who would like them for themselves and do a sensible deal for both parties. Unfortunately I might make you take the Sigue Sigue Sputnik album that's in there as well. 😉 I've also got a load of old gramophone records that belonged to the dad of the chap who's left me the punk records. Heavy as hell and 10"(?) by the looks of it. Probably not worth anything but a shame to just ditch. I've just realised this is beginning to look like a for sale thread, it wasn't meant that way.
