If you are thinking of a preamp or loom upgrade then incorporating a series switch is something I'd recommend. I really like a Jazz with the pickups in series, but that's probably because I prefer a P bass sound. Nevertheless it's a useful addition to a Jazz.

I quite like the look of it, can't really see what the negativity is about. It has a Ripper/Grabber vibe about it which I think is cool. Price is a bit steep but only time will tell if it's priced wrong. I'm do agree though that bass playing Queen fans will surely go for a looky-likey P bass, or Stingray.

Who will be doing the refinish, as a burst is more difficult and time consuming, therefore more expensive? Just something to bear in mind. My 2p worth on colour choice. Fiat did the 500 in a lovely dark turquoise, that with that neck and the blocks & binding would look great. I know you don't want a scratchplate, but a mint one with the turquoise would be fantastic. You need one. It would be a reggae/dub monster. It's got such a huge, deep tone while still being clear and articulate. It's giving me dirty ideas of what to do with do with the Cruiser P I picked up earlier in the year.
