I run a Markbass lm800 non tube and it is seriously loud through my HD212, I keep it under control by turning the input gain down a little. It has way more power than I normally need, but is there in reserve if I need to call on it!
Is the cab that agressive or are you just not used to EQing for a cab of that format and that quality.
If you follow the threads on Talkbass you will see that Roger has voiced the cab to be aggressive, this does help them to be heard in a mix, but it can be too much for some users. A little eq can of course go a long way!

The shuttle through those cabs is one of the best matches available
Good to hear that your happy with the Spyder, I could never get to fully understand the EQ section of that amp , and I just seemed to get a good sound straightaway with a Markbass head . It's great to see amp and cab builders getting involved in basschat , I am far more inclined to try new gear from bespoke builders who interact with the general public , so hats off to Roger . After being stuck in the "mud " for many years , Mark at Bassdirect put me onto a great Vanderkley 212 Cab which is great for the big gigs , so I am looking at the ML112 for smaller gigs and rehearsals . Cheers Martin
Very different cabs, the Vanderkleys are very even and pristine sounding, the Baer is very tight in the lows and VERY aggressive in the upper mids. If you like what you have and want a smaller solution the 112 MNT might be a good option. +1 to markbass, great sound set flat, and always sits just right in a busy mix.

I have never played one but a guy that I listen to called Nigel Hendroff uses a starmaker and a duo jet to great effect, they seem to sound quite similar from what I can tell. He is worth looking up on YouTube.

Really pleased that you are loving the cabs, on the amp side of things, Bass Direct have. Staccato 51 at bargain price, it is an amazing match up with those cabs. It has huge low end and a slightly scooped mid, this fits with the tone profile of the cab nicely and is the best match up that I have heard yet. Sounds huge live!

For what you want to spend you may not get a significant improvement, I would recommend saving up for a set of fralins which sound very growly, or a set of nordstrands which sound very clear and wide. Both offer superb build quality and tone. A set of decent strings can sometimes make as big an impact as a set of pick ups for a whole lot less. Take sunbeams vs Dunlop nickels, sunbeams are bright and open, dunlops have less high end but a huge low mid content, I have two nordys, one worth sunbeams, one with dunlops, they sound very different!
Got the 2 x ML112's today. Only been able to play at home with them, but they are what I hoped they would be. Lows are stong, yet tight. mids are articulate and very present. Highs are there but not harsh. The real test, of course, is loud with a band. I have a rehearsal on weds so will report back. Ian, thanks for taking such good care of them ! And Mark, from Bassdirect, thanks for the quick, safe posting. Thanks all !
Hey no problem, I try to buy top end gear and look after it. Hope you enjoy them, they are amazing cabs!
I consider it a very nice compliment to be considered in the same company as Jim's cabs and we appreciate you giving the cabs a try.
My understanding is that they are even made in the same facility, fit and finish is second to none. I would still like to try the ml115, I that will be more my thing.
Hi Ian, very interesting, thanks. I mainly use my AE112's. They are a smaller footprint, lighter and 95% of what I want to sound like. It's that 5% that has got me thinking about Baer, the new Bergs and Alex's Big Baby. My ultimate goal is to cover all my needs with 2 cabs, weighing as close to 30lbs each as I can get. I’ve been auditioning a lot of gear lately and I’ve found that I’m at a point where nothing sounds better than what I currently own. There are only slight shades of difference. For example, my Lull sounded better than the Nordy P5; my Lakland sounded just as good as the Roscoe Beck V; Aguilar DB cabs might sound slightly better than my AE cabs but as they are 50% heavier they will never make it on to the wish list and the Thunderfunk has never been seriously challenged. The last great leap forward in tone was when I put flats on the Lull. The Fodera basses I tried were amazing but these days I'm not even close to that end of the market. I guess my spare cash would be better spent on lessons.
I am actually done with gear for now, I might be tempted by a max 9.2 or maybe a carbine but right now I just need to get better at playing! I have tried many high end basses as well and come back to my Nordy VJ4 every time, I am also using a VJ5 with big singles at the moment which is also really nice. I think Carey is sublime as a builder.
This is all very interesting. I'm seriously considering selling my HS210s literally because I fancy a change, and the Baers were toward the top of my list along with a pair of Berg 12s or something Barefaced. it's silly really - the HS210s are probably as good as I'll get. GAS is a terrible thing.
HS 210's are so amazing, I used to own a HS410 and loved it to bits, weight again was the issue. Once you have owned ceramic Bergs there really is little else that will scratch that itch imho. Can't speak for Barefaced as I have never tried them, I have heard very mixed reports about them, the guy who bought my original HD212 tried one and sent it back, he tried it out with his mates and thought it sounded very poor(but loud) he loves the Berg........ other people swear by them, others say they look like they have been knocked up in a garden shed, who knows!
Amp will be an Ashdown Spyder 550. Can't wait to have a "proper" midrange ! May I ask you what was not to your taste in the Baer cabs ?
I am just really picky as I am sure Mark Stickley will tell you! I prefer the bigger low mids and polite upper mid voicing of the HD212, I had owned one before and was always totally happy with tone, but struggled with the weight. The idea with the ML was to store one cab where I normally play and not have to carry much gear around, sadly this did not work out due to security isssues so I went back to a single cab solution. The Baer is a quality piece of gear, as Mark said to me, this is kind of like choosing between two very high end sports cars, it is difficult to go wrong!
Hi Roger, Mark or Lana, a couple of questions comparing the performance of ML112 cabs. I'm not talking metal or heavy rock, but will 2 ML112 cabs be equal to 2 AE210 or DB210 cabs for tone and volume on a loud gig? This is a gig where 2 210's would be used in preference to 2 112 cabs. Would 1 ML112 equal 2 112 cabs at volume, and would 2 ML112 cabs be an equal for my 3 AE112 cabs, at volume?
Hi Chris, The Baer ML112 is very similar in output and tone to the AE210, it has a little more ultimate low end ability and less top end, although the Baer can sound quite bright as the midrange driver goes to 9k I believe.2 ML112's will be similar to a good 410, maybe like an AE410 but with a bit more low end. Are your AE210's the earlier or later versions? the later ones are a bit less aggresive in the upper midrange making them sound more refined and polite. A single ML112 will sound bigger and louder than a single AE112 but would not match an AE112 stack. If I already owned your AE210's I would feel no need to change to the ML112, you would get a very slight weight saving and a slight chage in cab voicing but that is all, and nothing that a little eq work can't overcome. The ML112 is also a bigger box than the AE210, The Bergs are remarkably compact! Think carefully before you let them go, they are getting quite rare and are one of the best 210 cabs around! Ian
And now they are mine !!!!!!!
Congratulations, you have got a really good deal there, Mark told me he was going to put them up for 500 each. What are you going to drive them with?
Two ML112s for sale at BassDirect. So someone can get to try them and form a fair opinion using their own ears ... http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Baer_ML112.html
Those cabs are absolutely mint with very light usage, nicely broken and ready to go, I know because they were mine!
Bingo! Anyone? I for one am very happy this isn't me involved in an online dispute. From my rock n roll perspective, I just hope it sounds good and performs well, that is all I care about.
If you like a cab that rocks this is a great option, huge volume great depth of tone, slightly aggressive upper mids and very light, copes with eq very well.sounds good with Orange amps......

What am I missing? Cheap valves, expensive valves
IanA replied to 4 Strings's topic in Amps and Cabs
I agree, it seems an insane price to pay for valves which are completely untested, you could've bought three very nice fully tested NOS valves from a reputable source for around the same price, but presumably someone saw the word "mullard" and went a bit nuts with their bidding?!
+1 when I spoke to Hotrox they told me that they have even expensive valves failing their test procedures, so price is no guarantee of quality or tone! Testing is -
Had a brief chat with Mark yesterday, good news is that he will be stocking the Valkyrie, and it is apparently awesome. I for one will be road testing with a view to making a purchase!
Wonder if Bass Direct will be getting the head in? Looks nice.
I hope so!

Have just re read the review that Tom and Alan wrote, I think a score of 4.5 out of 5 and comments like "this is one of the finest cabinets which I have evaluated from a technical perspective" and "there really is nothing to complain of, from a technical perspective, and much to praise" are very positive, all from people who are picky as can be about their gear!
I've just noticed that I started this thread way back when. It's about time I chipped in again. So... none of my bands are particularly loud. Would a single ML112 do for me?
A single ml will give you a suprising amount of volume and low end, if you play small bars or have pa support then one will probably do the job providing that you have a head that pumps out decent wattage at 8 ohms. I regularly play in a 400 seat auditorium with in house pa and 1 cab does it so comfortably, I do find that 2 does sound a lot fatter though! An ml112 will be similar in volume to a top end 210 such as a berg, but with more low end.

I really appreciate Roger taking the time to post on here and on Talkbass. He even took the trouble to send me an email thanking me for buying my two ml112's, can't fault him or his products.

For anyone who is near Leicester and wants to hear them, I am happy to let you try them, otherwise Mark Stickley is only an hour down the road in Warwick.....

Roger, you forgot to mention the Armadillo's
-
And I've found them the most worthless part of his reviews, as they do not adhere to any measurement standard. From the very first issue they admitted that they were doing their measurements their own way, because they didn't know how to do them the right way. That makes them as useful as mammary glands on a male bovine. I'll stick with half-space anechoic, as that's how all the rest of the audio world does it.
They certainly didn't do TC Electronic any favours!
