1. Anyone have a list of tracks where he used a stingray? Another One Bites the Dust? Was it a Bernard Edwards influence? Deacon is an amazing bassist.
2. Single cuts understandably divide opinion as most of them look revolting. However, I became intrigued after trying a few Fodera imperials - to my eye the Imperial shape manages to play against type and look extremely cool. Pretty much every other single cut shape makes me want to throw up. Since I couldn't afford a new Imperial, I got an Adamovic Halo which is a rare bass that pulls off a good look for a single cut in my view. http://www.adamovic....s/Custom/Ha.htm Feel wise I would say that a good single cut gives the neck a different feel, especially in the upper register compared to bolt ons and neck-throughs. The whole bass feels 'fused' together and certainly on the Imperials I've tried (and my Adamovic) gives terrific sustain and response, especially in the upper registers. That doesn't mean that I don't use bolt ons (I have a few bolt ons that are just amazing, esp my stingray) but I certainly prefer chording, playing complicated upper register stuff etc more on the Adamovic, which is by far the most playable bass I own.
3. Does anyone have my old Sonus Special 5 lined fretless that I sold to Gwilym? Miss that bass - it really sings.
4. Okay amigos - Lovely as new Yamaha SLB200 for sale at £1250. Pick up or meet around kent, London, M25…it's a fantastic bass. Recently set up. Just need to gather some funds…would keep it otherwise and will definitely get one again further down the road.
5. Ah - Zon sixers are just GREAT. Miss mine...
6. And withdrawn…
7. I had a jaco clone from him (as well as an andy summers tele that I still have) and I can vouch for his jazz basses being utterly gorgeous. The one I had, had great lo mid thump, a fast skinny neck and perfect, period correct body contours. A wonderful thing.
8. Funny…talking to Wunjo about sh*t slappers making a racket in the shop Saturday slap bass fog…hur hur...
9. It's a great doc…definitely giving the anti crowd a say...
10. Yup. Evolving Bassist, the Goldsby book and the Mingus fake book are all essential reading. I would also highly recommend Bob Magnusson's 'The Art of the Walking Bass'. It's an incredibly well written guide to walking. Nick
11. That's a great looking bass. Looks in fantastic condition. Assuming it doesn't weigh a tonne it's a great deal...
12. Yes, it's fantastic. Can't help thinking I should have an acoustic at home though...
13. Just brushing up my technique, especially scales and shifting, and came across Zoltan Dekany's youtube channel. He's a bass tutor at Leeds College of Music and has put together several very clear and thorough free online lessons. Definitely worth checking out for beginners and more advanced players looking for a brush up... https://www.youtube.com/user/zoldekany
14. It's pretty clear to me that if you don't want to browse a bunch of basses that are not what you are after, use the SEARCH function. I think the for sale section is brilliant, me...
15. Seconded...
Nope to subdivisions - there are too many as it is, and one man's 'upper budget' range is another man's 'lower mid-range' etc. Stuff will fall into the cracks.
16. Yes and with me withdrawing my Halo from the marketplace it's the one to buy if you want to go all high C tastic
17. Cool basses these - Devine just posted some solo bass stuff played on his overwater sig. Great playing and a great sound - good low end for a 33... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PwEvbsr1qI&list=UUWTj3vCqkQIsrTGSm4kM34g
18. You can always get a new 4003, an XL2 is a different matter. There's nothing like a Steiny...
19. Yup - a possible solution to your issues is to have a belt and braces overhaul of how you play with your right hand. Adopting a new technique could see you using your muscles and tendons in a different way and the repetitive nature of the strain will disappear. Here are a couple of shots of Gary Willis playing with his VERY light touch, three fingers and a ramp. The key thing is letting your set up and gear do the work, no heavy picking. Low action is essential and ramps are very useful as they instil a muscle memory in your fingers to not dig in. It will feel weird at first but is worth getting under your belt. Also, as someone said above, it would be useful finding a teacher who can school you in this stuff Slow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_xvmexPsCc Fast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88l_qCfZwlU I used to play with a very aggressive right hand but saw the writing on the wall and now play with a much more measured amount of pressure on the right hand. Good luck!
20. Yes, proceeds to Children in Need. On that note, excellent stuff BBC. It's got huge stars in it and Mr Wonder is a major coup...
21. Being really nasty about terrible cover versions is excellent fun in my book…it's a huge, slow moving target...
