1. Bought a fantastic 75RI off Nick. Brilliant deal. cheers!
2.
The most sensible post in this thread.
seconded
3. It's pretty clear that anyone who buys a brand new boutique bass as an investment is deluded. They literally shed a third to a half of their value when they leave the shop. Vintage instruments are different of course. However, there is a clear group of dudes who churn through high end basses because they can and they don't give a stuff about the investment side of things. You can see it more clearly on Talkbass where obsession over particular holy grail basses waxes and wanes with time. Intensity of chatter about brands (or should I say Marques ) like Celinder, Wal, Ritter rises and falls. Characteristic of this sort of thing is an obsession with detail like the figuring in laminate tops, pickups, preamp tweaking etc etc This group of players/collectors includes people who are extremely good and some who can barely play a note. I think people take the piss out of the latter and some of that piss taking is envy-based. (Of course some of it is because people find three quarter length shorts, beer bellies, high fiving and bad slapping amusing ) But to state that AC, F basses, Ritter, Fodera etc etc are just collected by venture capitalists and accountants who can't play a note is a generalisation IMO
4. I have to say that that is a hideous looking bass. Spalted basses also have a nasty habit of looking wonky and rippled, even with thick poly finishes on them. The wood is horribly soft and is often easy to mark as cork. Spalting is a by product of fungus. Yuck...
5. Reading this sorry tale, it strikes me that with the massive turn over and correspondingly large depreciation in high end basses amongst collectors who barely play their top dollar basses, he could have bought a near mint bass through another talkbass member for a fraction of the price.
6. Yes, just been perusing this thread. I had the opportunity to play a blocks and binding AC at the gallery a while back and came away thinking that the bass was a nasty piece of work and a colossal waste of money.
7. Ah I had one of these until the scumbag support band nicked it off me on tour....in 1994...still miss it!
8. My jazz is about 8.5 lbs, as is my stingray. Took a bit of hunting but it's possible.
9. I play a 78 4001 and a 75 RI jazz. Both are stunning and yes, it took me many, many basses to find these good ones. Interestingly though, the jazz proved harder to find.
10. One thing I really love about the Ray is the way they feel extremely robust and ergonomic at the same time. They balance very well with no sign of nose dive, at least not in my experience. They are such a comfortable bass. Tonally, I'm getting a big thumping sound in the studio from the two band. Really heavy tone. They do sound like a more aggressive P. I've chosen not to have full on zing and the bass is doing the business. GREAT bass....
11. Thats interesting. I found the 1994 neck to be simliar to the present day ones. I guess its a case of try before you buy?
12. I recently went back to a Ray as my main stage bass after using a 94 for a couple of years in the nineties. I chose the classic as the two band eq is killer, it was very light (make sure you get a light one as it is possible to find them out there) and it looks great. Another big factor in favour of the classic was the neck profile. The 1994 i had (which had a three band, VERY clangy) had a flat radius board and a chunky neck. Not comfortable for my hand. The classic neck profile (7.25 radius, less girth) is honestly one of the great necks around at the moment. If you can't get a classic, get an 80s Ray with the slimmer profile unless you want to go the whole hog and get a pre EB, but then you could run into cost/construction/weight issues. I've seen 88/89 Rays go for 8-900 in the gallery so they are a genuine alternative to a new standard Ray and IMHO are better than the new rays. I tried a number of new standard Rays and honestly think they are not in the same league, quality wise, as the mid nineties bass I had, which is a shame.
13. I have a cab in need of some woodwork on the enclosure. Anyone know a backline tech who can do this sort of thing? The gear is based in Deptford/ New Cross SE1 area Cheers! Nick
14. Not a grumpy dude. Quite the opposite in fact...great instruments...
15. 4001 with TI flats and shitloads of compression
16.
Stunning. When the chap who advertised that he wanted a 62 has made his mind up, I may well be in touch. If it's still here Bump.
Yep. Out of the market since Monday when I wrote 'sorted' on the thread ! Bumpo...
17.
the latter lacking only the assertion 'plays superb like butter'.
Or the more irritating version from across the pond "plays like BUTTAH"... At close to 13 pounds, that p is not a bass, it's a punishment...
18. my advice is to check out the link below. Scott Devine's free online lessons are a treasure trove and will blast a dose of salts through your playing. They're great... http://scottsbasslessons.com/online-video-bass-lessons
19. The Classics have a rounder (smaller) radius on the fretboard in a vintage style (7.5 radius?). Not sure if they're thinner across or front to back but the neck definitely feels smaller in the hand and very playable indeed. I had a 94 'Ray which felt too chunky and flat in the board. The eighties Ray's have thinner necks with smaller radius boards and feel great too. Don't know why they insist on making the modern stingrays chunky in the neck...
20. My main bass at the moment is a Classic Ray, for live and studio. It sounds immense. The neck profile is perfect. Why they insist on having a different profile on the standard Ray is beyond me....
21. I could courier it. But I do prefer to have a natter about a bass and let the prospective buyer give it a going over before they buy. I could take pics of details though... Cheers, Nick
