1. GES 😀 I feel confident that this won't turn to GAS, too.
2. Not too aware of them other than the odd song but 'Ain't it Fun' is a great track with a super cool bassline. Someone did a great cover on YouTube which is the only reason I've heard it... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dgAQZ9KZfdw Edit, no idea if that bass part was written by this guy?!
3. I think saying the tks struggle with loudness and lows is a bit unfair; given that providing tons of either isn't what they're made to do.
4.
The future of everything is wireless, No one is going to go back to a lead in the professional arena even if it's made of unicorn hair. It is totally pointless.
That was my thinking too.
5. Yamaha bb2025 seem to go for £1300 ish second hand, if you can wait for one to come up. Sandberg VS looks good as well and they're nice and light. Then, Sadowsky, Lull and Xotic will all be top class, but also £2000.
6.
I was going to say, you don't seem to be using an Ashdown...
I resisted the temptation to put that! 😁
7. The fire extinguisher is not part of my current setup! Sadowsky MV5 > pedal board (TU2, Keeley Bassist, Boss OC2) > Tecamp Puma 900 > Vanderkley MNT212. Love it!
8. Different valves could help, what have you got in there at the moment?
9. Meet them both, go with whoever best matches your interests. Be that: best setlist, nicest people, most accomplished musicians. Make an informed decision so that you don't regret rejecting one of them a month down the line.
10. Looks like a Teisco sort of thing to me too!
11.
. Where do you put it in the signal chain?
For me, I don't use any envelope filters, fuzz or overdrive; so it is 2nd in the chain after the tuner and before my only other pedal - an OC2.
12.
I always thought compression was a cover up for poor technique. Honestly. I can see why in the studio it is used so much but tbh I thought that was down to making it easier to get a better mix?
That's is the bulk of its purpose for studio use. Your first point however, is too often just what people who don't like compression, know how to use it, or what it is capable of like to tell themselves.
13. I voted other because I have one full rig! One bass, amp and cab. With my pedal board and a DI box for emergencies. It's that rig whatever the venue, be it a pub or Queen Victoria's old summer home! It's that way through choice. I might eventually grab a cheap secondhand J5 but it'll only ever be a backup. Edited to say, I've no problem gigging any bass, cheap or otherwise, and never have but decided that 'one to rule them all' was where I wanted to stick my money.
14.
Wayyyy too much money
They look really nice. But, I agree. Not where my money would go.
15.
I unplug any bass on stage between sets, saves big hoofed drummers hooking the cable and dragging basses off their stands!
Yep, same here.
16.
I don't understand the people saying an Ampeg fridge is hard to transport. Negotiating stairs with one yes, but on the flat theyre easy to wheel along and mine fits in a Ford Ka along with two amp heads, a flight cased pedal board and two bass guitars.
How?! That's amazing. I had a 2009 KA and with the back seats down could just about get my 2x12, flight case and bag of leads in! Plus it had an annoying boot that was sunken so everything had to be passed over the lip to get it in. I'm 6"4 so had to have my seat back though.
17. I had the same experience recently, Ampeg 810 and SVT-CL amp. It was wonderful. I know I'd never get my money's worth though. Maybe a quarter of my gigs would permit it, and it'd be horrendous getting it there and home. If you can make the logistics side of things work, then it'd be great fun. However, for me a 4x10 or 2x12 and 25kg max weight are as big as my rig is going to be. May be worth looking for a 6x10 as a compromise?
18. Pandas have boots now?! Ours is a 2006 and my 2x12 takes up the whole back seat. Are you looking to stay with a 2x12?
19.
Seriously..? Halfway house, really; I don't see the notion of having this special, optimised posture standing if one is, at the same time, moving about, interacting with the audience and generally 'rocking out'. Nothing wrong with any of that, of course, but I can't see the bass staying riveted in its 'home' place in doing that, unless it really is riveted in place. If one is moving about, the bass is swinging around at least a bit, isn't it..? Or does everyone loon about with a rigid instrument..? My point would be: either it's necessary to have a good, mastered posture (in which cas I'd say sit, and hang 'em all...) or it's not that important in rock, so rehearse and play as seems comfy or appropriate for the genre and leave the perfect stance out of it. I sit, as a drummer, but if I wanted (or felt like...) playing standing (or even lying down...), I'd have no qualms with it. One plays as one plays, unless this stereotyping is really what it's all about, in which case what's the deal with the technical perfection..? Serious, me..? Pshaw.!
Bit of a digression... But, I'd say that good posture is obviously important; for health reasons more so technique. Also, I could 'loon about' and my bass would stay in place as I have my strap set to sit the bass on my stomach; as it would if I was sitting. I certainly couldn't play with it around my knees, punk stylee. But, as the OP seems to want to play standing up, I'd advise just practicing it. Like anything, it was only a first gig and like woth anything related to learning an instrument; it improves with practice. When I started on guitar I remember going through this exact scenario.
20.
Can you not sit down at the gig..? A folding chair or drum throne..? If not, why not..? Just sayin'.
Not sure if serious...? Unless it's a jazz, acoustic or mellow gig; or some sort of medical reason stops it then it just looks wrong to have people sitting on stage. I felt guilty sitting there when I broke my leg, when it was first plastered I had to keep my foot up or it was painful and I felt bad for the audience. I like to dance and interact and show that I'm having fun as well. That probably makes me sound a snob, but it's not entertaining to watch unless people are moving and showing a bit of emotion. With regards to the OP, Scott Divine did a lesson about strap length which is worth a watch. Otherwise, it's just a case of practice and getting a feel for it.
21. Sounds great. That bass has such a nice grain I'd be inclined to leave the pickguard off!
22. If 'wooly' is what you're trying to get away from, Tecamp (and therefore, probably Eich) are worth trying.
23. Is this a trick question?
24. On bass, I like 21. On guitar, 24. Anything more than 24 makes me twitch.
25. Nice pair. These do look great. Will have to try properly check one out at some point.
