NBD - Maruszczyk Jake PJ... Fender / Sandberg / Lakland killer?
M@23 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Crikey, 7.2 lbs. That's incredible. Looks stunning. -
Little sustain on 24th fret on ONE string only (First world problems...)

Crikey. The dead spot is probably caused by the dust, way up that end. Edited to acknowledge the 'dusty end' jokes have already been made... I have nothing else to add here. -

Yamaha BB2024, still. Only now, it's getting to that point where I'm thinking about what I'd have to sell and spending every spare moment googling them. It's getting serious...

I doubt letting him hear a recording will do much. If he doesn't know as he is playing it that he is in the wrong key - it won't dawn on him. Especially if he is a repeat offender! I've been there before, with drummers and guitarists. Both similar circumstances, great guys and good at what they're doing for people that only have a couple of years under their belts, but it is difficult sometimes. Might just be a case persevering - especially as you're enjoying it on the whole.

Hate to moan on a beautiful sunny day, but... Did an originals gig for the first time in just over a year; last band on at 10:30, terrible PA, shared backline and most people went home at 10. Reminded me why I joined a functions band in the first place.

Another shout for the Corvette. Very comfortable.

Without having played the amp, I'd say it's the way it is. I use a line 6 pod x3 as a backup/can't be bothered with a load in rig, and the synth sounds are much the same. Even on the bass presets, I haven't fiddled with them as I wouldn't use them anyway.

Ah man, we've been here before, but that was with regards to the RH450. I used to have a Little Mark 3 which was great for the stuff you mentioned, perfectly reliable and a lovely tone, which I thought worked brilliantly with a couple of Bergs. Perhaps a bit over budget, but might be worth keeping an eye out for 2nd hand are Aguilar Tone Hammers and Tecamp Pumas. Oh and Carvin might be worth a look too.

Replacing Berg CN212 with 2x BF Super Compacts... Thoughts?
M@23 replied to goonerjoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well I happen to think that Fender basses are over priced firewood and I could take it upon myself to spam the various threads singing their praises with advice to buy a yamaha/ibanez/peavey for a 1/2 the price or less and get a better built better designed instrument, but I dont ... because it would annoy people.
Yet, in making your point managed to do exactly that. -
I'd love a BB2024. If once pops up used or someone is looking to trade one for a Fender US Standard P, give me a shout!!

Replacing Berg CN212 with 2x BF Super Compacts... Thoughts?
M@23 replied to goonerjoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
Funny that the 'Barefaced are louder' arguement comes around on every speaker cab recomendation thread on BC. Firstly, I find it interesting that they apparently eek more volume out of their units than Bergantino/Vanderkley/Aguilar/Anyothertopbrand; and secondly, that people care so much. I can't think of a gig I'd do where a CN212 wouldn't be loud enough. Not trying to ruffle feathers, just an observation. -
Ah fair enough, how did that end?
It ended well, in that I got a full refund. But only after travelling the 100 or so miles to the shop as I wasn't getting anywhere with phonecalls. Their argument was that I had invalidated the warranty by taking it to a third party. Even though, a trained eye could tell just by looking that it was a dud and no work had been done. If i hadn't said so, they wouldnt have known. I should have mentioned, this was the 3rd bass they'd sent too, the first two were also faulty! Which is the reason I took it to my tech as I was getting fed up sending the things back. Got my money back and went elsewhere. Since then I've only bought from shops run by actual musicians, not sales people. Hope it works out for you in the end!
I'm gonna wait for a resolution before I start slinging around names!
I wasn't fishing for a name. Merely stating that I've been here before, with a major retailer.
-
I wonder which shop this is, as I've had almost the same thing from a big UK retailer.
-
If you weren't driving them that hard, there could be a fault. They're quality cabs and should be taking a fair bit before they start struggling.
-
Well, I wouldn't tbh..... I've heard a few of these cabs and I just don't get the tone goals of the people who used them.. All I seem to hear is BASS which drowns out the mix and also kills the tone of the bass. Of course, this is the fault of the people that used them, but then I also think that is the desired tone brief anyway... I do concede that I am not a fan of small units for a discerning sound anyway ...and that sort of thinking definitely doesn't work for me...see the '210 loud enough' thread, but it also depends, muchly, on what you expect soundwise.. Volume is not a problem from small amps and cabs... but tone definitely is, IMO. This is not a one cab issue... I feel all the small units ( I've heard ) 'struggle' but then for plenty of people, there is no 'issue' at all.... I'd like to know what they are trying to achieve, tbh...
Good point. I've done gigs with small combos before, which have been loud enough at a push, but you take what you're given in terms of tone.

A Markbass 2x10 did me, it did get pushed on louder gigs with an originals band but for most things it was enough.

Precison Pickup Recommendation for 70s type sounds
M@23 replied to Lozz196's topic in Accessories and Misc
Can you get one made? I'm sure if you send your other one off someone could give the wire and winding a once over and have a good go at creating one. I know the perfect guy, but he is unfortunately out of action for the time being. He makes some incredible pickups though at good prices. I'm sure there are others that do likewise out there. -
Finally got the amp back! It was repaired under warranty, eventually. Communication and turnaround time were pretty poor overall, but at least it's done. I won't be gigging without a backup from now on.. Even less impressive is that they've managed to muller half the screws holding the lid on by using the wrong size screwdriver
Good news that it's back - worrying that they thought it was OK to send it back with mashed screws, bit careless.
I was expecting to see a thread about gear made of clear perspex.
Me too! I was expecting one of those Dan Armstrong basses.
-
I just don't find them pleasant to listen to at all. Maybe it's because I also play guitar a bit, but I'd much rather hear a decent guitar solo than bass. But then, I'm not a fan of the whole continuous 16th note slap fests either. Which might discredit my opinion as a bassist...
I'm starting to ask myself the same question. It wouls appear the majority go with the 'this is my tone' approach. I may have to try adopting the same attitude and see how it goes.
Yeah mate, I just use a good P bass tone, which suits everything my functions band does. Tone pot up or down is as far as I get in shaping the tone.
