1.
thanks Chrismuzz I'm wondering whether a Markbass head, paired up to a cab from a different manufacturere is a good idea?
Sure they're really nice amps, so through a decent cab will sound great. I actually really like Markbass cabs.
2. This sucks. I hate to say it, but I run my gain and drive both at 11 o'clock, maybe gain at 12 and drive at 10 o'clock; or thereabouts and also have a clean tone. Do you boost the EQ loads or run the master really high?
3. If you know the songs, you're set. Just try enjoy the whole experience. No one will notice if you mess up a little!
4. Not sure if had been mentioned, but this is/was a common issue with these amps and if you ping TC's UK service centre an email, they are usually prompt with sending a new set out. Maybe a touch of super glue might help too.
5. Lovely looking instrument.
6.
I love the deep chunky neck on my 78 Precision, it makes me work harder and I find playing it more enjoyable because of this. I also just love my 78 anyway, I know some aren`t too keen on 70s Fenders but I`m not one of them.
. Me too. I don't own, but have used a 78 quite a bit, with dead rounds, and it plays and sounds great. Its a weighty beast, but is so solidly built and nicely played in.
7. That's the general consensus I think; really great little amps, but reliability is a worry. If you're buying new, might be worth a go. I've not owned one, but have played one and really liked it.
8.
You can be as pedantic as you want about the name of his role based on the specific instrument he's playing - but that won't make him a bass player.
Yes, it will. In fact, it's pretty much definitive.
9.
My teacher did the same, skej21. Dan Quinton (Otis Grand and The Dance Kings). I think the counting thing M@23 mentioned above revelas an aspect that you touched upon. The I er and er 2 er aspect of counting is a great means of explaning the idea of written music but it is NOT a tool you should use whilst actually reading (you would have no chance). You need to get the rhythms in your head so you are 'seeing' them as phrases rather than reading each note. Think 'word' rather than 'letter' or 'syllable'.Proficiency comes with practice (and it is worth noting that, if you don;t maintain the skill, you will lose it).
Cool. Thanks for that.
10. Depends on the cab. My old cabs with metal grills and rat fur I didn't bother as they were tough as nails. Somewhat prettier tolex and grill cloths warrant a bit more protection. Just realised my amp fits perfectly in an aluminium Maplin case too, so that's that one sorted.
11. I started 'Simplified Sight reading for Bass', was wondering, what is the best method of counting when playing passages of different values? For example, for 8th notes I'm counting 1 and 2 and... And when I hit a group of 16th notes I'll start counting 1 e and a 2 e and a... Is this correct, to change it up depending on the value of notes you're reading? That's probably a silly question, but its working for me now, but I don't want to continue if there's a better method.
12.

Blimey. That's a stunner.
13. That might be worth a go at that price! I just found a Dimarzio Tone Zone S which I'm keen to try. Like the matched headstock too.
14. Very smart. I've been thinking about getting one of these as I've got a few decent guitar single coils laying around that I could try.
15.
Good thread. I'm totally over the moon with the Fender Flats, 9050ML. Never tried them until recently, and they have blown me away. The feel amazing, so superb, and not too bright - just right to me. I found some Flats to sound way too dead in the wrong environments, but these are just superb. I've tried a few Flats before, but never really bonded - tried GHS, Chromes, etc., and thought that I'd just be sticking back with rounds - until some online searching tweaked my interest in the Fenders. Highly recommended!
Me too. They feel nicer after a few months too.
16. Crikey!! That rosewood board suits that down to the ground. Lovely. Good find.
17. That's a good looking piece of wood!
18.
You'll end up with an avatar like skej21!
Haha, good spot. I love relic Olympic white, so it could well happen!!
19. Ah crap. Now I'm starting to think about another Precision.
20. I was going to suggest the ToneHammer as even the 500 is unusually light. The 350 must be tiny! But, if the TC ticks all the right boxes, the Tonehammer might not have enough features for you.
21. I had a flick through in WH Smiths a few days ago, I'd agree, it was pretty bad. Certainly not enough content or interest for me to get my wallet out. Its a shame, especially as there are at least two very good guitar magazines and decent magazines on pretty much everything and anything else.
22.
Just being there is like an attraction, sirens and noises, bright lights etc! Enjoy and congratulations too
This. It's just a great place. Soak it in.
23. Did one gig in London with an originals band, it was a complete waste of time. Supported a popular German band in a very trendy part of London. We thought it would be a great chance and all the right people would be there... Well, no one was there! Actually, there were a few, but they couldn't have cared less. The gig cost us money, and efforts would have been far better spent playing closer to home or expanding our online profile. But, looking back, at least we have done it. It's all experience. Just, for us, wasn't particularly productive.
24. What sort of trades are you after? Other pedals? Markbass Compressore? Cheers.
25. Do it! Makes a great 2x12 rig.
