  1. Consider a Lakland 5502 (or 01 if you can't gather the funds). Second hand you should be able to get one for £700-750 and they are fantastic 5 strings. Jazz pup at the neck and a MM style at the bridge but you can select either of the coils independantly for jazzier tones.
  2. Acquired an acoustic bass last month and I am restringing it wil better strings but I can't get the pins to stay in the bridge when I am tensioning the string. Am I doing something wrong? I am dropping the ball end in and then inserting the pin as hard as possible ensuring the ball is still in contact with the base of the pin. Got the E to stay but now onto the A and as soon as I pull on the string the pin pops back out. HELP! Thanks
  3. A good core tone just gives a better start and means the bass is going to be predisposed to sounding good. They say say you can't polish a turd but if it was already shiny to start you wouldn't have to try so hard.
  4. And I am 21 today, obviously all good bassists are born 29th of January
  5. Next query: Do the valves have to match? Is it a case of two 12AX7 or two 12AT7 or could you use one of each? And if so what would happen?
  6. You enjoying it then? Glad to hear it. I am actually really liking the acoustic bass that was included in the sale/trade. Finding it great for jamming to stuff on my computer whilst my amp is in the other room and I am meeting up with some of the guys in my band this weekend for a folk session. Pleasure doing business with you
  7. Ian just bought my Genz. Great bloke to deal with, good communication and no hassle.
  8. Tyrant - The Rebirth... (Reclaim the Flame)
  9. I dont really have volume issues, I can keep the gain pretty low and get good volume but I will never be using a really really distorted sound so I would like a bit more play at the lower drive end. Philips 5751s look like they may be what I need.
  10. Thanks for the info obbm, what brand did you opt for? Where did you pick them up?
  11. There is two 12AX7s in the Orange, I assume I would just replace both with ECC81s. Total noob in all things valve, is it just a case of taking the old ones out and putting the new style in or is there more to it than that?
  12. Dirt dirt dirt is good but I would like it more as an option than a necessity. Tried it with a passive (my Dingwall) but even then it is very prone to drive.
  13. I love the tone of my new Orange but I find, particularly at gig volumes, it seems to distort at relatively low gain settings. This works for some stuff I play but I would like to be able to get a slightly cleaner or at least less aggressive tone easily. I think part of the issue is that I have been gigging it with my Lakland 5502 which seems to have a fair amount of oomf. Would changing the preamp valves help? Switch them for something more prone to warm chunky tones rather than really gritty rock, if so what would folk recommend? The other option I assume is cutting back the signal, turning down on the bass or adding something in my chain that allows me to tame teh volume just a tad. suggestions people?
  14. Was it one of the Dlx models that come with the humbucker at the bridge. Played a few of them that had pretty dodge pots on them.
  15. Try a fresh battery, also is there an active input or switch on the amp you are using?
  16. Pick up some ER-20s, will skin you less than a tenner if you search the net. I keep mine on my keyring at all times so I can put them in whenever. Great for practices, gigs and putting the point across to someone that you are tired of listening to them. Did that at a party saturday and the look on this lasses face as I calmly popped in earplugs whilst she blabbered on and went back to drinking my beer was priceless, good job I know her and she didn't hit me too hard for it.
  17. Very little learning curve with fanned frets, I use a Dingwall ABI six string and it took about 20 minutes to get used to it. The Js are close to standard scale lengths (not 37" on the low end) so should be even easier to adjust too. If I had the money I would have this in a flash
  18. I would detune the E or learn it from 3rd on the B, something like -------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- ------------------3------------------ ----1-2---4-5------4-5---3---1-2- --3-----3------3--------3---3------- When I played it on a 6 I detuned my E to D and B to A
  19. Peavey BW to keep it company anyone?

  22. If money were no object I would take a quick tour of the UK commissioning an ACG, a Shuker, an Overwater and a Sei...well at least one of each.
