true-valve DON'T mean good sound, neither does solid state ;-) The Laney all valve GTR amps do sound Good- the ones I've heard anyway. Here's hoping they did a good job on this bass monster!
-
Yeah- with an efficient cab &/0r one with lotsa cone area, the V4's Do a GREAT job with volume. Tho thru a single 15" or a 1x12" it does struggle for headroom. IME!!! Thru a 8x10'' -I USUALLY use it thru my Bergantino NV610-It has plenty-tho I often have it just on the verge of 'break up' - a LOVELY place to be :-)

WELL mARSHALL HAVE THE VBA400. wHooPs! - & well yeah.lotsa power-but if U wasnt that..... each to his own. I was just wondering what they were like???
-
I just saw a magazine advert for the new LANEY valve 400w bass amp. 8 x KT88's Anyone tried one of these brutes out yet??? Seen one??
-
if it's at a price U like & don't need 300 valve watts- GO 4 IT!!! They sound superb!!!! & thru a cab with plenty of cones area( like my NV610 ) get PLENTY LOUD!!!!
How did you test the amp to get 170w or 300w? If you measured the current into the speakers with a meter this would account for it as the meter will not read rms but mean so your reading will be higher. This is what manufactures state when they say "music" or "peak" power, trust me it's rms that counts. Dave
I dunno what my valve "guru" tech did to measure my old amp, But it was definately RMS he informed me of. Definately not "peak". Re the valve to "pump up" the output... I read this in a thread on Talkbass- I think it was the "show yr Fenders" thread. there they talk re how Fender-with the 400PS- got a valve amp with 6 x 6550's to put out 435w RMS!!!!!!!!!!! I've not seen or heard one 'live'-just in the pics on TB. But it sounds like it was a "MOTHER" of an amp! ps. thanx for yr description & thought re the Peavey's power!

can use a carpet de odouriser- like a powder- for the case. Just sprinkle it in & leave it in . wipe of any excess & U can leave bass in there too & eventually the bass will smell as nice as the case lining -should!

I've recently been GASSING for a JAGUAR. My local has a RED one in stock & I LOVE IT!!!!!! She seems to be built really well & has ALL those sounds available at your fingertips. From a simple passive Jazz, to active, series/parallel, etc... I WANT IT!!!!
I still don't understand how they get 300W from only 6 EL34s, I think they mean peak and not rms. So I would say its more likely to be 150-160W rms. Or am I missing something
I must be missing summink too@@@ I had a 6 EL34 amp (sure it was a 1975 baby) & it put out about 170w when we tested it! Do PV do what Fender did yrs ago w/ the 400PS & stick a valve in another section to "pump it up more" ?!?!?!?!????? The Fender 400PS did 435w & had 6x 6550's-normally about 300w. I dunno, but would like to !

pics???????????? I've not seen one!
-
nice!!! So did you put the string thru bridge on? or are they string thru stock?
-
Ahhhh.... a black one-they look nice! But I've my heart set on THE one I played in store-it 'felt' right! We'll see!

I tried one of these this morning actually! Yep they're made in Mexico & yep -this one at least- was pretty cr@ppy!!!! I was there A/B ing a Fender Jaguar & a USA Jazz S1 switching....The Jag. IMHO won this one. So I thought I'd try out a cuppla others while I was there & had the time. Tried as well as the Jag & MIA jazz, the Precision Big Block & the new vintage Mod. Squier Jazz fretless. The Squier fretless jazz was(all IMHO) far better than the Big Block P!!!! The BIG BLOCK's stacked tone control was at an angle-like someone had knocked it -HARD!!! But no-one had-according to the salesman-who I know personally & he wouldn't B*llsh!t me!!!- it was just LIKE that!!!!! :-( The set up was OK- they'd done it 'in-store'- but it still wasn't "nice" to play & the sound was "uninspiring"-to t\say the least! The tone controls didn't do a lot- not a lotta treble on hand, & not very bassy either...& I know passive basses-had 'em all my life & still do, but this was pretty dull. Not that PUNCHY either-for a big mutha of a humbucker!!! As I said the Squier VM fretless was a FAR better instrument & was 1/3 the price!! I thought the Squier was not far from the USA S1 Jazz!!!!! But I liked the Jaguar best-closely followed by the MIA S1Jazz, then the Squier VM Fretless.....then a LONG way down to the Big Block Precision! Thats MY 2c worth anyway!

Looks GREAT!!!! Congrats!!!! I recently 'topped off' my Trans Teal 'ray 5 with a set of DR 'Evergreens" coated strings. Nice green colour to match the EB MM Trans teal 5'er!!!!! + a set of red coateds for my red Precision!! :-) So I reckon a set of GOLD strings would look awesome on yours. Dr's are great strings I've found.

As dlloyd says....thats a LOT for a 'shop-soiled' sub IMHO. I'd at least get 100 off for the damage. But as stated- I'd go 2nd hand if poss.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds goooood!!!! Just have to enquire re price & shipping now!

'nother vote for natural -black guard & maple neck w/ black blox!

+1000000000000000 keep the PV & even maybe get it checked out as to it functioning properly. 15" I DON'T find to be very directional & find that their sound can OFTEN be/seem louder if U stand NEXT to it-meaning behind the actual spkr cone-just alongside it! But a 15"s sound wave will be a few metres long & so U actually get the WHOLe sound U R putting out a fair way from the spkr. Try standing next to it....then try standimg in front, but a few metres away. See how that goes. I've ALSO found solid state amps to not push 15" spkrs(by themselves) very efficiently(probly a scientific reason to either dispute this or back it up ) & you'd be surprised how much volume you'd have with a 4x10 on top of the PV 15"(as long as impedance is OK) Try all these tings if poss.- even try the 2 15" cabs U have now together if Impedance is OK again. But get ridda the Behringer outta the 2!

I haven't A/B'd 'em but played an SVT810 one weekend & NV610 the next- both with my Fender 300PRO- & difference was quite astounding. As I say- Deeper, punchier, more clarity...... ONLY drawback-if it IS indeed one- was the 810 is a little taller & thus the sound is closer to yr ears! -Helps if U R on tight stages often (as I am) & U have 2 stand next 2 yr rig. Ioften find myself having to dip my head/bend over a little to get a "full" representation of MY sound-with the NV610. But I'm ALWAYS pleased with what I hear- so I'm V.happy!
-
Me too-clicks into up/down pos. positively. return it for warranty fix & demand a replacement to 'tide U over"
-
I tried a few of them. Wasn't impressed w/ 3 or so but grabbed one @ a city store & it felt AND sounded GREAT!!!! Damnit!!!
-
I didn't find them to be in the way. I see yr point tho! & yep- GREAT range of tones. For the stuff I'm doing- havin active/passive, series/parralel on hand is A GREAT thing. But I reckon I'm gonna grab the Epi Jack Cassady bass- I know- totally different thing, but a semi-hollow, vintage sound will be GREAT also & is cheaper :-) felt great, souded great too!
-
U got it!!!!! I do like the Ibanez version...........buit it's hard to go past THAT look re the Epi JC bass!!!! Does sound & feel nice too!!! Sounded a bit more 'vintage' than the Ibanez IIRC. The Hofner-well 1. there's hardly any Hofners out here & 950 UKlbs is like $2500AUS + the govt double up duty the Aus Govt. put on ALL imported guitars - so that make that bass-Lovely tho it looks- WAY outta my reach at about $6900000.00 AUD!! Thanx for the reply anyway... Contacted the shop again today(which is in Sydney-I'm in Hobart..... Freight-$30) & they are gonna chuck in a HS case-Hard to find ones to fit as it's a WIDE body shape- for a li'l extra cash.....so................ Gas not solved even if I DO grab this ...as I tried the Fender Jaguar out today-TOTALLY different kettle of fish but..... Whoo hooo LIKE IT!!!!! Active/passive, series/parralel.......etc.... NICE bass!!!!! ;-(
