That looks absolutely awesome, I'm glad you're settling in with it. How long did the build take from start to finish in the end? Do you charge up the luminescence under bright lights before a gig? or just leave it outside?

Thanks very much for the response guys, lots of options I hadn't found. Separate bridge saddles for each individual string is something i hadn't thought of. I hadn't considered an Octave Up pedal, I tried the Octave up on an Boss ME50B and it was pretty dreadful unless you play perfectly cleanly, but i think that was digital. Are standalone/analog ones much better?

OK, I did a search but couldn't find anything particularly useful. I've decided that within the 4 piece band I'm in the process of getting up and running (vox, 1 guitar, 1 bass and 1 drums) that I need to get myself an 8 string to make my life a bit easier. I'm finding myself having to play chords at various times and it would just be nicer to be able to have that extra octave. So, I stuck a Wanted ad in the wanted section, and have got a total response of zero. My questions are: What 8 string basses are available? What should I be looking for? and where can I get one? At the moment, the only joy I have had in my search is seeing pictures of 8 string Washburn B20s (absolutely gorgeous but proverbial rocking horse poo to obtain), and the Hagstrom HB8, which is available, but appears to be a short scale (I'm not keen on short scale).

Sorry, bumping an old thread, but thought I should bring attention to the GS bass that's popped up on Manchester Bass Lounge. Looks to be a sexy bit of kit: http://manchesterbasslounge.com/?p=4975

Shame, bit far for collection from me, that's a lot of bass for not a lot of money, especially for the mod happy types (which I seem to be turning into)...

Setup Advice Please - Notes 'Choking' If Played Too Hard
allighatt0r replied to allighatt0r's topic in Repairs and Technical
Cool, thanks guys, I will check these things out. How close is too close for pickup height? Thanks -
Gig last night was rubbish. It was in a small hotel/pub, an hour and a halfs drive, to play to a pub which had about 10 people in it.... In a particularly small space. Oh well, hopefully tonight's will be better,

Setup Advice Please - Notes 'Choking' If Played Too Hard
allighatt0r replied to allighatt0r's topic in Repairs and Technical
I think the nut is OK, open notes seem ok. How would I check? I have a set of feeler gauges, what clearance do I need at the first fret? The notes choke on fretted notes, would the nut affect those? -
Hello all, I've recently got hold of a new (to me) bass, a 70s Japanese Hondo II Proffesional (doublecut shape with a Dimarzio P pickup and maple neck and 3 point Gibson style bridge). Really quite nice it is too. When I received it the bridge was bent and knackered, and the G string saddle had been replaced with a 5p piece that had been bent in two and a couple of knotches cut out(!!!). Anyway, cutting to the chase, I bought a replacement 3 pointer that came off of a Thunderbird, got it installed and set up, and the bass plays really rather well, nice action, intonated perfectly, lovely. Only problem is, I've noticed something that doesn't tend to happen on my Washburn, and that is that notes tend to 'choke' (for want of a better word) if I play too hard with my right hand. It's not the sort of buzzing that I would get from the action being too low, it's something else, the note doesn't sustain and loses the bottom out of the tone. I wondered if this is likely to be a problem with my setup of the bass, or whether it is just a characteristic of this particular bass, whether it's a P pickup sort of thing (the Washburn is a double humbucker bass). Any advice please? Thanks.

Sorry, been on a morris dancing weekend, so not had the chance to take pictures. Overall I'm pretty impressed, although the bridge is buggered (poorly made and bent upwards in the middle) so I have sourced a thunderbird three point bridge which I'm hoping will fit OK. -
Lee took my Raspberry Pi off my hands and will be putting it to good use. Communication was great, and the whole thing went smoothly, thoroughly nice bloke.

My second time buying a wiring kit from John, he went through the options with me and was very quick to respond and deliver, the man is an absolute pleasure and I won't hesitate to go straight to him next time I have any wiring kit needs. He's a godsend to the soldering inept!

What cover do you enjoy playing the most?
allighatt0r replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
Such great responses that I had forgotten about. Won't Get Fooled Again is brilliant to play. Really enjoyed gigging that song and looking forward to doing it again soon. My current favourite to play is Sound of Madness by Shinedown. It feels so great to be in a proper rock covers band after putting up with playing rubbish like Oasis for years! Update from my G30 - I think that my TC Polytune may have been interfering with the signal to the receiver. I was having problems when the receiver and the Polytune where within inches of each other, but having them a couple of meters away from each other is much better, perfect signal to all corners of any pub.

I seem to remember the singer sounding a bit like Geddy Lee when I used to listen to them a few years ago. Are they still putting new albums out? -

The Hondo I just picked up has the same style of logo as yours, I expect they must have been manufactured around the same sort of time. What do you use to polish the frets on a maple board? -

A nice looking Hondo P, with our very own FlatEric referenced in the description. Although the picture is not actually the bass for sale....?!?!? The Hondo has arrived! It's overall quite nice, the hard case is a bit beat up but functional. Deperately needs a new set of strings and the bridge is bent out of shape. There's a route out underneath the bridge so I'm not sure a Hipshot Supertone will do the job. I think I'll try to get a standard Gibbo Three Pointer. Looking forward to plugging it in at home later.
