1. I've never been a guy for bright sounding new strings, i usually get my brother (also a bassist) to play them for a while so they are a bit deadened (is that a word?). The main thing i don't like is the twang! Anyway, to cut a long story short i recently got a set of Sadowsky Blue Label nickel strings from CHRISDABASS and put them on. No twang, no loud clicks, but plenty of punch! Perfect! Only problem is, Sadowsky strings are like rocking horse poo over here and i don't want to order them in from the US of A, so basically, i need recommendations for similar sounding Nickel strings that are easily acquired in England! (D'addarios are out, they seem to bright to me) Thanks in advance.
2. Awesome. I've been following this from the shadows. I hope it's everything you wished for! Great entertaining thread. Build something else soon!
3. We get on average between 200 and 250 pounds for a gig, and if our gig booker really uses his car salesman techniques he can organise us a free bar too! The only thing is, when i wake up in the morning with the £40 in my pocket from the night before, it always end up slipping through my fingers. Lately we're starting to work at getting into the forces gigs (we did one a couple of weeks back for £300 plus free bar plus fish and chips dinner) and apparently they fork out a grand for big does like the summer balls and Christmas does... Which would be pretty good for a pub covers band!
4. I found i could never get the right sized scrunchies, if they were big enough to get over the headstock, they were too loose to be any use. So a good alternative is the velcro wraps you sometimes get on new cables. They do the job well and they're easier to take on and off!
5.
What about one of these: http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=EG00795 Never played one mind, but told they can do a passable precision? Or, Beedster (who knows a thing or 2 about Precisions) said the best P sound he has heard from a non P was from a Shergold. Might be worth trying to pick up an old Modulator or something?
Now THAT floats by boat. (so to speak)
6. the word that springs to mind is "classy".
7. Nice! A black one would also look sweet. Not sure who mentioned it on another thread, (it might have Bassassin) but it would be cool to have magnetic fastenings on a bass and some scratchplates. Then you could have many different coloured scratchplates to suit your mood at each gig!
8.
Thank you for the kind words mate do you have any feedback anywhere that i can add to? or shall i start a new one?
Nope! i've done very little basschat transactions! a new one would be very much appreciated though!
9.
A precision bass which some dirty arab has vandalised/carved out and written funk machine in biro! on the heel of the thing,i would then set fire to my underpants and would be rescued by a passing ship, sell the bass at bonhams and live happily ever after.
You forgot to tell us about your desert island rig!
10. Any bass at all? John Entwistle's Buzzard, and the biggest Marshall Bass stack you have ever seen... That way, with any luck, i can make a musical cry for help, or alert some nearby elephants with subsonic frequencies
11. I might be in the market for one of these when (perhaps i should say if) the band get a bass capable PA. Have a discreet bump on me.
12. Come on guys, what sort of compressors are we talking about? built into an amp? or a little stomp box? any recommendations?
13. I'm totally self taught, using some books but mainly tablature and working it out as i go along... I really need to get lessons, but i know that if i do i might as well start from the beginning! My left hand technique is awful (however, i'm getting no pain, i have very felxible thumbs and i always play with a straight wrist, but that's no excuse...) and the limit of my theory knowledge is the major scale and the minor pentatonic... I remember all my songs using shapes i create in my minds eye on the fretboard.
14.
Until you've had one of the 70s/80s originals you haven't really had one. I used to have quite a few old BBs and take my word for it, they're class, a future classic. If you like Yams, and you want a Precision tone, that bass has your name on it..........trust me.
OK, so what should my price limit be for that? what's it really worth?
15. Have you seen this Commodore Nick? it looks very similar to the bass in your avatar! At least this guy is honest about this Kay Precision Hondo - Am i right in thinking that the laminated wood is the cause of the pattern on the forearm shaping?
16. That bass needs photographing sat on a dark brown leather armchair... something that would fit in the comparethemeerkat adverts.... I like the colour alot! However I'm not a great Jazz fan.... Good luck with the sale!
17. The only problem i have with the BBs is i already have one! But then again that could be a good plus point as it will feel very much the same... And i haven't tried a passive one yet....
18. Westone Quantum (Headless)
19. So this is about what impression the bass gives you of the player and the night ahead? Yamaha They make Bikes... Strap on and enjoy the ride! Wal This guy knows what he's doing. Fender Could do with a bit more imagination!
20. What are the best mid priced precision alternatives out there? I want something that sounds like a precision, but doesn't look like a generic Fender (I am a thorough non-conformist, just like all the others! ) Currently i play a BB614, which gives me a great sound, although i would like a passive bass! So basically, my wish list is: 1) sounds like a precision 2) doesn't look like a fender 3) is passive 4) and is mid-priced (300 to 500) Any ideas will be much appreciated!

I have been informed by a reliable source that the black nylon wound rotosounds emit the same sound as someone kicking a cardboard box
22.
Somebody down south just buy this, don't argue - it's buttons for something this unique & stunning: El Maya through-neck original - £175 BIN If he'd post it, I'd pull the trigger without a second thought. J.
Cummon, give us a bit of history! I'm tempted.... Is it meant to be a bit of an alembic rip off?
23. I had a peavey milestone iii as my first bass, and the only thing that lets it down is the plywood body. I stuck some wilkinson pickups that i picked up for a fiver and it did the job pretty damn well!
24. Brilliant guy to deal with, kept me well informed and chucked a MMIV badge and sticker in with the Sadowsky strings. Very quick delivery and would highly recommend this guy!
