Drop-D is only good for one thing.... KILLING IN THE NAME!
-
Wow that's a nice bit of kit you've got your hands on there! Where did you get it from? Did you put the flat wounds on or is that how it came? You should put a post in the Rickenfakers thread in the ebay links section of the forum pointing those guys in this direction, they'll probably be able to tell you all you ever wanted to know.

Interesting, little know bass/ music facts for a quiz
allighatt0r replied to TMB's topic in General Discussion
OK not so obscure, But Tonny Iommi lost two of his fingertips when he was 17, working at a sheet metal factory John Entwhistle played all the horn parts in The Who's "5:15" Keith Moon hated miming, so often acted like a complete pillock when he was forced to do it on the telly (watch youtube!) Elton John's Birth name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight The full name of hip hop singer Akon's full name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam Myself, John Deacon and Ginger Baker all share the same birthday (August 19th) -
Did the rolling stones have some sort of aversion to using a tuner? I'm trying to learn a couple of songs while playing along to them (namely sympathy for the devil and jumping jack flash) and the recordings are completely out of tune. (somewhere between standard and half a step down tuning) What is going on? Was this the cool thing to do back in them days??

Getting a pickguard made from a picture
allighatt0r replied to allighatt0r's topic in Accessories and Misc
Excellent. Thanks very much guys! I'll give the Yamaha chaps a go and see how much it will set me back. -
I'm after a pick guard for my BB614. Yamaha have recently released a BB414 with a pickguard, which is cunningly called a BB414x. To cut a long story short, i want a BB414x pickguard for my BB614. One of the guitards in my band owns a music shop and stocks yamaha, and has been trying to speak to his yamaha rep about getting one as a spare part order, however he's not getting anywhere fast. I've managed to find a fairly large picture of the bass in question, i was just wondering if it would be possibly to seng it to a luthier, get it made and how much it might end up costing me. The picture is here. What are people's thoughts? the only thing i'm worried about is getting it blown up to scale properly. I guess i could scale it up using the neck scale as reference or something, but i've never done something like this before. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I think a brilliant example of budget basses doing a pro job is the RickenFakers thread in the Ebay links section of this forum. Alot of them are very very good quality, and i've heard alot of reports of them being just as good as the real thing. I must get my hands on one some time!

I'd like to add a +1 for the yamaha BBs! Also, the OLPs were half decent after a proper set up! Back when they still made 'em!

So what do you drive to transport your bass gear around?
allighatt0r replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
We have a band van. A good old fashioned Transit sunshine bus with all but one row of the seats removed. It's soon going to get flames all the way down the side. And we've recently fitted a plywood bulkhead behind the seats to separate us (and our instruments) from falling gear when we have to brake for... *ahem* "safety cameras" I have a Vauxhall Corsa V Reg 1.2 16v. Which managed to get my SWR 115 combo in as well as my bass, but only with the seats down. It also trigered off the load sensor that engages the back brakes. That usually takes 3 people sitting in the back... -
We've got a couple booked. Only little local ones! But they're festivals nonetheless. Hachfest and Brandon Buzz so far i think. They'll be my first big open air gigs! But i'm not scared haha

So, Saturday afternoon, i'm wondering what to do now i have two combo amps (one 210, one 115). I considered using a female to female jack connector to extend the 210 to the 115, but was a bit sceptical about how much the connections might sap the cignal and such. So i put my head together with a local guitar guru i know, who suggested running both combos, with the second one plugged into the D.I. out of the first one, and he also has the idea to put chorus on the 210. So I would use the 210 for mids and higher, and the 115 for mids and lower frequencies. I had a bit of a dry run at the guitards house before the gig on saturday and it was sounding good! Set it up at the gig, turned it up and stood back.... it sounds brilliant! the chorus adds just the right amount of colour and i have ALOT of control over my sound now. The final signal line went: Bass > SWR Black Beauty > 115 speaker and DI out > Cool Cat Chorus Pedal > Ashdown MAG 300 combo > 210 speaker I must say i was pretty impressed.

My first bass was one of these (not left handed though) and i burnt it in a wheelbarrow then left it in the guitards back garden for a few months.... I've had ER20s attached to my car keys for a couple of months now. I've tried using them a couple of times and have taken them out after the first couple of songs because of the mess it makes of the mix in my head. I talk quiet as a mouse (apparently) because all the sound vibrating through the bones in my head is magnified by the earplugs. However, after last nights ridiculously loud gig, i couldn't get to sleep because of the cacophonous ringing in my ears. So, i've made a pledge to myself to use them no matter what from now on. I've got a bit of a question about those foam earplugs (the bright coloured ones you have to squish first). Do they offer the same sort of protection as the ER20s? and does the mix sound any more..... realistic?
