I would be canny pissed off if someone was trying to back me into a corner like that.
To be honest we're busy enough without their gigs, it was such a good venue we couldn't wait to play there again, just didn't think there would be such a fuss about playing 4 miles down the road!!

The woman who appears to book bands for pub A wanted us for her retirement do as she used to teach our guitard at school and had seen us a few years ago. We do the gig, not a great payer but with the renta crowd pot it topped up nicely. Enter my old mates brother in law...met him a few times and been talking to him online. He sees the band and asks if we wanted to do the pub he books for, his brother in law is a very old friend who plays there regularly. Pub B is about 4 miles from Pub A. He's an agent so it's fee less his little bit, net amount is a bit more than our usual and a good bit more than pub A. I check with the band, all ok with it so he comes back with a couple of dates. Cue our singer in a panic last night as pub A has done their collective bollox at us playing so close to them and that my mate keeps poaching bands off them for their rival pub. Now the quote was "brownie points from *insert pub A's landlords name* if you cancel" What a lovely position to be left in, our singer is trying to get gigs from pub A whilst I'm using my connection to get gigs from pub B! and the pub A landlord is trying to back us into a corner. He also sent my contact a sh*tty message too! End result, 1 gig at pub A although reluctantly on both sides I guess and two at pub B. And checking both gig lists there is only one band that has four gigs at pub A and just one at pub B! Hardly poaching all the bands is it! Rant over!!
The last one I did was in a popular Glasgow pub. Mostly blues stuff, sending you to sleep. Then we came on, an ac/dc tribute act. Gave them Bad boy boogie and Whole lotta rosie!! It woke the crowd up and we were asked to do more but the man running it said no Not been to one since. They seem a bit cliquey to me.
Yeah I went to one like that. Couple of the guys saw me as more a rock player so put us together and we did a Cream number, Crossroads IIRC and Wishing Well. Got a good response from the assembled masses but when I mentioned to the organiser how much I'd enjoyed it he muttered under his breath "it was a bit loud" and promptly led the next group into a ten minute plus version of Hey Joe!!! It just got boring for me in the end. As long as there are no musical snobs there it can be a good experience especially for a learner. Just watching and listening can help your basic chops and sometimes someone will take you under their wing and help you along.

Advice on how to get this tone? (Ikuo from Bull Zeichen 88)
barneyg42 replied to zerofocus's topic in General Discussion
The OP has asked a reasonable question to work out how to sound like one of his heroes. I have no answer, it's not my style but how useful is it to come on his thread and slag the style of his hero and tell him he's unlikely to be able to play like that!! I know plenty of players who can play like that and better!! It's possible the OP can play like that to a certain extent and just needs some finer points to help him. Sorry to be blunt Blue, I think your post is very disrespectful and uncalled for. I don't know the OP but if he was fairly new to the site comments like yours could push him elsewhere. Rant over!! -
Guys that play fast with no soul and all the chops and technique in the world have never impressed me. I think it's a waste of time for young bass players to use these sort of guys as bench marks. Chances are you'll never sound like him or have the ability to play like that. Blue
WOW!!!! Good sound advice that!!! -
Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

Rocking the Cavern, Raynes Park! Green LEDs coming up white for some reason!! -
I hate lending books! I found the book to one of my favourite films at a boot sale, the vendor asked me if I wanted the two follow ups which I didn't realise existed! Of course I snapped them up....read them and cue housemates girlie asking to read them. Needless to say up to the day he moved out I guess I asked him once a week if she could return them! Gone forever!!!
Regarding both multi-effects in general and Zoom, I would have agreed with you a few years back, however today's Zoom multi-fx are light years ahead of where they were. I recall having Zoom 505 (when I was guitar playing teenager) and the 708 a couple of years later when I moved exclusively to bass. Build quality wasn't great, parameters were difficult to edit and the sound was passible at best. (This was in the late 90's, early 2000's) Up until recently, I'd been using individual pedals, but I found my board expanding more quickly than I liked - with some pedals not seeing much use! (I play in a function band, and I would say, add an octave pedal to play one song, then a chorus for one more, then add a second distortion to save me messing with settings mid-set) For the past year or so, I've been exclusively using a Zoom B3 (I belive the B1Xon mentioned by the OP shares the same sound processing chips). It does everything I need it to. It's solidly built, easy to edit (even on stage!) and sounds great - you'd be hard pushed to notice a difference in sound between this and what it digitally models. It works just like three individual pedals, and they can be combined how you please. I never use more than three effects on an an invidual song, so I just have a couple of patches that switch between. It covers all bases for both my function band and my originals band, both live and for recording (DI out with great amp sims). It's certainly not a bedroom toy. It's genuinely the best money I've spent on any gear - ever. Give one a try if you can!
Yup, all of the above really! I ended up in a Floyd tribute band as well as my main pub band and the BCB pedal board didn't have enough room for all the effects I needed. Dropped the Floyd band and I realised with the lack of room in most pubs from having that great big board in front of me I'd go back to multi-effects. Now just to say the main problem with the sound was because there was no bottom end as the Compact (1x15 for those that don't know the brand) and the 2x10 which on it's own has a reasonable bottom end, was sat on top about 2 feet in the air. When I wasn't pushing the bass the little pedal sounded pretty reasonable. It's got many amp sims and you can chain 5 pedal/amp sims in any order, very easy to edit as I found out trying to sort my sound! All will be sorted at the weekend, unless I make some other stupid equipment mistake!!!

Would a bad Keyboard Player make you quit a band ?
Another great reason not to have keys. Though to be fair, drummers are guilty of this too. They'll use up ALL the available space while setting up and if you make the mistake of leaving gear within reach, they'll move it/stand on it/push it over if it encroaches on 'their' space. Which is why I always try to turn up after the drummer has set up. The other reason is, I can't stand watching and waiting for a drummer to set up his kit, it's like waiting for Godot. Heh. I'm doing a lot of moaning today!
Oh God yeah!! Between the two of them it's a nightmare!! I have a stool as I get a backache and the other day I went to sit on it whilst I waited for everyone to set up as I was early and there was a cymbal case on it!!! A cymbal case I tell you! It's a travesty!! Yeah I'm a bit moany today too!!! -

Actually to be honest our keytard is pretty good with his left hand apart from one song where I keep thinking I have this monster bass sound and it's him!!! The main problem is when we set up, I need space for a Compact and everything, 2x10/amp stacks on top, so I'll put the Compact in the space and by the time I go to put the rest on there's a bag/massive keyboard flight cases/speakers stacked in front of it!!! One day I was stood facing my set up rig making some adjustments and turned around to find the full size keyboard flightcase right behind me! Cue hopping and skipping to avoid a tragic fall! -
I tend to use a radio link and always turn it off in the break, of course I always turn it on for the big power chord in the first song of the second set...........don't I?? Also I set up at one gig turned up the bass to get sound plus lots of crackles when I turned the volume pot. Ensues mass panic as I think my bass has gone awry! First stop, change batteries but no change, then start to check amp, speaker and effects connections, nothing!!! Then check bass again.......push jack into socket properly and all is well! Another Doh!! moment!!
Mate, we played a party one night. The electrics were really dodgy and my amp kept cutting out, so there were long periods of no bass in the first set. During the break, I di'd straight into the desk for the rest of the gig. The thing was during the break folk came up to us and said, that was brilliant! One guy even booked us on the strength of that woeful performance. Thing is, you thought your sound was sh*t. Everyone out front never noticed, I bet you all the tea in China!
Too true! Gig went down a storm! Guitarist had the man flu and played pretty badly but despite this it was a great gig. Got to wait until next Friday to rectify the mistake and hopefully get the sound I'm loooking for.......preferably with the wonderful Compact plugged in!!

So I buy myself a new ZoomB1Xon as an after xmas pressie to myself and it was its first run out last night. We had time for a sound check so I wandered out with the singer to have a listen. Totally underwhelmed by the sound I had set up I had a fiddle with the amp setting and to be honest it didn't sound much better! Still, it was a good gig and we got a great response. So at the end I'm packing up and I see my problem. I run a TC BH500 into a TC 2x10 and a Barefaced Compact, usually a monster awesome set up which tonight sounded all midrangy and had to be cranked so much it seemed to be distorted..........I'd not plugged the bloody Compact in!!! Doh.....so the TC is sitting on top in all its midrange glory with no decent bottom end at all and the Compact was just a bloody expensive speaker stand!! And actually the TC on its own sitting on the floor is always a decent sound but sat up high it was pants. Oh well lesson learned, I've only been playing for about 40 years!!!

We do What's Up by Four Non Blondes......good singalong in the chorus but you need a good singer for the rest!

We are a 5 piece female fronted classic rock band, mostly going out for £250-300, typical weekend warriors with the occasional wedding/festival/party added on. We've just taken our 34th gig for the year and there are still others to be added. I think we are doing quite well, into our 6th year, apart from drummer problems which seem to be sorted now it's been the hardcore four plus whichever drummist happened to be on the books!! Without blowing my own trumpet we get a great response wherever we are, exceptional singer, and I feel the best musicians I've played with. So that's my little boast for the year, I'm not trying to score points but I'm wondering how other people in similar bands are getting on? We have lost a couple of great gigs over the years, one turned into a coffee shop ffs but others pop up and keep the diary flowing.
Went to a jam. Played a few songs. Flirted inappropriately with gentlemen. Came home and managed to cook an omelette without setting myself on fire. Now in bed, probably still pissed. Hurrah for 2015! :-)
*presses like button*
Well just got back, venue only 10 mins by car away. Not as bad as I thought, there were a few under 50 in the audience and dancing too. £160 and a plate of sandwiches each, most of which I could not eat! Oh, and a glass of fizz so Happy New Year!
Had a similar night! Back at my girlies enjoying a couple of beers now! Takes a while to wind down, very dancy energetic crowd so we got right into it!

Pub that's 15 minutes away, usually a very poor payer and likes us in every month to pull a crowd. We've cut him back to bi-monthly but he still booked us for NYE on a pretty tidy sum. He's charging on the door with a buffet included and usually it's a pretty good do (we've done it a few times before), I'm looking forward to it! Will have a little snifter when we get home 😉

I loved it when he described the physical movement from the speakers, the only movement I could detect was the sh*t that came from his mouth! Oh by the way, as no one else has asked.......... Is it any good for metal?? I'll get my coat!!

Is it just not possible that a singer/guitarist etc could be allowed to be a great player but just have a bloody terrible memory??? Would anyone go and see a big name band or player and walk out because they have a lyric monitor on the floor? I can't see your average covers band being able to afford that sort of technology so a stand it is! Can't see a problem myself, just keep them low and to the side a bit so we can see the singer/player!!
