Well, just hit the sack after what was a cracking gig! 50th birthday party in a large marquee so the sound for me wasn't great but still we had a blast. Hardly dropped the ball at all through the night, second set was full dance floor all the way. It has to be said the drummer Alex, a very old friend I hadn't played with and seen for ages, was depping on the same one rehearsal as me and did a grand job. Plenty of good feedback afterwards from the main guys (and girly singer) so definitely on the call up list. So time for bed and back to the good old rawk for tomorrow nights gig, gigged Friday too so a 3 gig weekend, good to earn some extra dosh too........now what am I gassing for!
I have to admit to my shame I knew nothing about him before learning 'Good Times'. So I've been doing a bit of googling to educate myself. What a talent! Although I have to admit I could never learn to love 'I'm Coming Out'. You have to draw the line somewhere, lol
Bernard.....sadly missed!
Most of the stuff I learn with my teacher is rock and blues based, as he knows that's my music of choice. However sometimes he forces me out of the comfort zone - I've done a bit of reggae and a bit of jazz with him and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I'm learning 'Good Times' by Chic. Not something I would ever have voluntarily listened to, but now I think it's great! What a fantastic bass line, I'm really loving learning it It's great having your horizons expanded.
Anything Chic and Bernard Edwards is to be admired and played, I do noodle along at home to some Chic occasionally, if I end up on this band's call up list I'll suggest a bit of Chic to them, guitarist and singer are father and daughter and old friends so I'm sure they won't mind a suggestion or two! It's been a real eye opener to have to do it properly rather than messing around at home, I love my rock stuff and don't really have to think about it but getting the notes and the groove of the dance stuff is giving me a new confidence.

Had a strap from Andy who despite having been to a festival and being sweaty and skanky he whipped down the PO ensuring prompt delivery for last nights rehearsal. Top bloke to deal with
Playing "out of your comfort zone" pushes your brain and fingers to new levels of dexterity and is a very good thing.
I was playing Masterblaster using a pick as I couldn't get the speed then watched an online lesson and realised I was playing in the wrong area of the neck, changed position and it all came together with the fingers. It's a birthday party we are playing so dance floor music all the way. Makes a nice change from bashing out Bon Jovi, ACDC etc!
young hearts run free, simply the best, hot stuff by any chance ? everybody berates a lot of the cover band staples as being tedious pop songs barely more bearable than mustang sally but if you get the groove right you can pretty much guarantee the crowd will be enjoying themselves (unless youve been booked for a doomfest or something) - and they are rather fun and satisfying to play if you nail them just right - young hearts run free is a great one to flow and groove but make sure the drummist gets hot stuff at the correct tempo or you will end up with cramp in both hands after 3 minutes
+1

I regularly play classic rock and blues but for a few weeks I've been learning a set of classic dance stuff for a dep gig on Saturday for some friends, Stevie Wonder, Brand New Heavies, Candi Staton, Celo, Donna Summer, Jocelyn Brown, Tina Turner etc. Some of it has been a bitch to learn (Masterblaster etc) after years of rock thrashing but it has be said I had a blast and my mates were well impressed. Just hope can hold it together on Saturday on one rehearsal!

Keeping a bloody drummer for more than 3 months at a time, Spinal Tap have nothing on us!
Very sad. He seems like such an amazing person in the Standing in the Shadows of Motown film. RIP Bob.
Saw this a while back and had been meaning to buy the DVD, have just ordered it. RIP Bob

£1300 Status S2 5-string. Being headless helps with small stages etc but I watch it like a hawk when I'm off stage not playing, bit much for a pub band but I've been wanting one for ages!
I play a status that has two strap buttons on the bottom so it will stand up on it's own if leant agains a wall or amp. However I secure mine so the side handle on my Aggie 112 with a velcro cable tie
+1 on this, just buy a headless Status and all your problems are solved

Booking Public gigs for function/wedding/covers bands
barneyg42 replied to bassfunk's topic in General Discussion
We don't go out looking for weddings or functions but they sometimes come our way after playing a pub and we get seen. Usually try and get something between £400-£600 for a wedding involving lunchtime setup and between set music supplied. These are few and far between though and mostly it's pubs at the £200-£300 mark. Do one at £180 (tight LL) got him up from £150 eventually and tend to try out new songs to what is a very friendly audience that we know well now. Did a gig last week as the "Friday Hat Band" ie you play for £50 + hat to see if you're any good. Landlord was a bit embarrassed when we rocked up and blew the place apart, but he wasn't to know we'd been around the block a bit and knew our stuff. Picked up a ton in the hat and have been booked for £200 in the future. We have a very proactive singer who chases gigs with a vengeance, she's a very feisty welsh bird from the valleys! We have CDs, website with some of our songs, videos, business cards, Facebook etc. Anything that show the band in a good light, and any recommends from previous gigs are good. Leaving flyers on the tables at pub gigs has bought some work in too. Hard work but when you find you have no spare time at the weekend and are getting in at 1am you know it's paying off! -
Bought Mikes Nanyo off of him, mega quick delivery, great comms and very safely packed. Pleasure to do business with ya!

I'm dropping some passengers off Monday and I'm then in Chesterfield for two nights (mon/tues). Just wondering if there's any music on locally, Monday being the better night as I can have a few sherbets as I'm not driving Tuesday, staying at the Ibis on the Lordsmill roundabout.

Bumpage before I either pull the trigger or put the safety on!
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/697-obscure-musical-backwaters/
Thanks Jack, I went through that thread when I got the fretless, had another look and could only find one slap reference, which was positive I must add. The one I'm thinking of is pretty cheap but I haven't got a lot of dosh to spare so don't want to make a mistake. I'm sure I can rely on the collective expertise of BC to point me in the right direction!

Theres one of these for sale on the forum and wondering what they are like for a bit of funk and slappage? The owner doesn't slap so is not sure how good it would be. Any clues gratefully received!
