Just read an interesting post on the Level42 web digest about this bass. It appears was owned by one of the digesters who sold it on to some one else for 2.5k who in turn moved it on within a week. The OP says it is a dog of a bass with a bowed back neck despite a slack truss rod and that he had had the frets filed right down to get some relief. He also says it had a very thin tone and was no good for any kind of gig!! Don't know the validity of any of this, a pic of him playing the bass is included in the post. Interesting if this is true, looking at the bass it's a cracking piece of kit but appearances can be deceiving.
^_^ ..... how you getting on with the SX by the way?
Brilliant mate, not rehearsed it yet but cranked it up a few times at home and it goes well, plays far far better than the price would suggest! Now where's the bank's number, just need a fretted 4 to complete the set...... I always liked those 'bics and to be honest I preferred the sound to the Jaydee when Mark was using them. I remember seeing Grupo MarK King at the Jazz Cafe and sad pavement dwellers that we were we listened to the sound check. Mark was using something else(I won't say the make) and we were told he had a bit of a problem with different outputs on the two basses(might not be true but he had some kind of problem) so he went back to the Alembics for the night. Blew me away they did, I was right up the front in front of his rig and they where stunning! Also played one at the Bass Centre when it was in Wapping, went in looking for a cheap cab and the guy there let me have a go on one when I said I was a Level42 fan. Had about £200 for a cab and he lets me play a £5000+ bass just cos I'm a fan.....now that's what I call service! PS. Bank just phoned....suggested I sell me liver as it's well pickled and preserved! DOH!

Sorry to drag this thread up again but something occurred to me today. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Dancing in the Street came up on Radio 2 today and I had a good listen to the vocals. They are very flat, not in tone but as in almost monotone, hardly any change of note. Listening to her on Jools Holland it seems to me that older singers tend to over sing if you see what I mean, almost as if they feel they have something to prove and yet the original recording was just sung plainly with no over embellishment at all. And much better I must say. DJ Jeremy (smugger than Mr Smug from Smugsville on a particularly smug day) Vine reckoned it was the best performance on JH's Hootananay Hmm! Opinions are like a**holes.............everyone's got one!
Hi Nik, long time no speak, hope all is well with you. Tribal Planet went bust a while ago, I was trying to buy one of their bags. Don't know if they have started up again. Cheers Martin
There seems to be some stuff still out there with some dealers but the TP website seems very out of date so maybe they have gone. Does look a good option if I can source something.

I got my Jaydee fretless a while back and it came in a old Ritter gig bag which it barely fits in.I've mailed a few people on Ebay selling cases and gigbags for the length and it seems that it's about an inch too long for most of them! I've just got an SX Jazz5 which can go in the Ritter but can anyone point me in the direction of a company that would do a case/gigbag that me Jaydee would fit in. (at a reasonable price of course). Tis 47inches long BTW and most of the cases that have been quoted have been this internally which makes it a right queeze! Just an extra inch (fnar) would help!
Ok the fretted one has now gone but the Fretless is still available £150 as new in box.
To meeeeeeeee!...........seriously buy this bass, it's a fricking steal! BTW, Jay is great guy to do business with and makes a wicked cup of coffee. Cheers Colin -
All sorted now thanks to crez5150(Jay). Took a trip over to his gaff in Essex this afternoon and grabbed an SX(from Essex)* 5 string jazzer off him. Not active but a fine sounding bass for the money and plenty of scope for upgrades although I may find when I'm out there it may not need it. He does have a SX fretless 5 as well which he may sell, give him a pm, grab a bargain!! *You see what I did there!!! Ok I admit I saw this Essex thing on T***b*ss!!
My class at school went to London to visit the Science Museum, about 1979. We went to see an exhibition by IBM about this thing called a "Micro Chip" (I still have the credit card size piece of plastic that held a micro chip with an IBM logo underneath, that was given out as a promo). Annnnnywaaay, we were allowed out to sight-see around Bond Street, as we were making our way to Harrods, a white Ford Escort was speeding up a side street towards us at the pavement on the main road, the car stopped and just touched a few of us. We all started to kick off untill we saw that it was Phil Lynott driving, at which point we all started to shout hi Phill, we love you and such like. My first time in London and nearly killed by Phil Lynott.
The places we meet people eh! What I didn't say in my original post was that I bumped into him in the toilet, although it was the corridor in and out so I wasn't tongue tied cos I had me old fella in my hand! He was with quiet intimate little group of people in the pub so it just didn't seem right to barge in looking for autographs etc......hindsight and all that!

On this day 23 years ago(my god where has the time gone!) we lost possibly one of the most charismatic frontmen to walk the Earth. I only saw Lizzy once, this was on the Thunder and Lightning tour and although I didn't think it was as good a line up as the classic Live and Dangerous line up never the less it was a fantastic spectacle. I bumped into Phil in a pub in Mortlake some time after this.........you know I was just tongue tied, there was so much I wanted to say but I never got the chance, just hello Phil.....orrright was the reply, and that was it. Not long after, we lost him. RIP Phil..........long gone but never EVER forgotten!
I read a lot of good things about SX basses, but where do you get them from? It only looks like Rondo in the US from what I can see, I'd certainly be happier getting one closer to home.
I have a similar question, I'm looking for a cheap 5 string and SX comes up in a lot of threads but I wouldn't like to just order one sight unseen or played. Bass on the left in both pictures is my Westfield 5 string which is for sale. Cheap and cheerful, passive, 2 vol 1 tone, would suit a learner, someone thinking of trying 5 strings at low cost or for someone to noodle on. Played it with a band a while ago and it made an acceptable noise so gig worthy it is. Has a very fresh set of strings on it. It's a bit edgy here and there, knocks and scratches but is solid and pretty well set up. Will take some better pictures when I get home. Looking for no less than £60, collection only from Woking. Looking to fund some GAS
I had a Shine 6 string for a while. It was cheap and worked OK, but not particularly well made or nice to play. It got moved on fairly quickly. I wouldn't recommend them. If you're in Woking it might be worth popping in to Andertons in Guildford before you make the trip to Denmark St, or at least give them a ring and see what they've got.
I'll have a look in Andertons, probably tomorrow. I was in London overnight anyway so it wasn't a special trip, and it *wasn't* a special trip as there was nothing to write home about up there. To be honest I wasn't expecting much for my paltry pile of cash but it was nice to have a look around. Normally I'm in my coach dodging traffic wardens so taking the bus was quite a laugh. Probably a case of saving up a bit more as Oldgit suggested and seeing if something comes up on here. Colin

Might be a big ask this one. I have about £150 to spend and need an active five string. Where is the likely place up the smoke (well Denmark St area) where I'd have a chance of finding something(probably S/H for that money). I had a sniff at a Yammy on the forum but it was likely sold and I didn't have the asking price at the time anyway. What are these Staggs and Shines like? I hear so many different opinions. I'm not a pro but I have been used to some decent mid range gear in the past but money is tight at the moment so a reasonable-ish stepping stone is the compromise I'll have to make. Cheers Colin
