IMO, Mil spec valves are more rugged but can be noisier than standard valves. I have had quite a few Mullard CV4024's in the past in audio applications, but in the end I avoided mil spec because of the greater noise. No idea why, maybe something to do with whether soemthing si done to ruggedize them in some way?

To echo Bassferret, could just be that the record was varispeeded to make the vocals in tune or suchlike. As a result of which its not exactly in D or D#. Some Beatles tracks, bits on After the Goldrush and more recently, some tracks on Radioheads The Bends ("Just" for instance) aren't exactly in A = 440Hz tune. Get the playing right and don't beat yourself up too much?

I've found the foot just taps whether I like it or not. Completely unwilled. Weird or what...

I had all sorts of trouble with And Your Bird Can Sing off Revolver. Especially trying to do backing vocals over it at the same time.... -
Hmmm...I do take Cantdosleepy's point. IMO, reading over the posts above its not all that cut and dried is it? If the punter has asked for his bass to be vandalised / aged, half of us think thats up to him. HOWEVER, as a previous post said, the guy seems young: and (probably) don't know any better when it comes to ageing a bass....so he's going to rely on the advice he gets from the shop. At best, the advice doesn't seem that responsible given their inability to do it properly. - Surely anyone starting out on buying instruments is owed a duty of care from his shop to receive guidence and advice about what is sensible to do? I don't see that the shop can just abdicate all responsibility, and they do seem to find it a bit amusing. Anyway, the rights and wrongs of this are subjective not objective. IMO, it seems wrong.

"try approaching going up on stage more like you were about to go up and act in a play, rather than going up to perform music. So before going on stage, you get into your costume, and get into character. For me it's all about putting a distance between yourself and the person going up on stage. if I went up on stage, i'd be still, nervous, worried about making mistakes and worried about making myself look like a tit in front of a crowd of strangers, or even worse, mates... and wearing something that isn't you is the first step in making that difference and distinction between the two. " - I totally agree. My attire of choice has been white shirt, black tie (so it stands out) yellow and black striped trousers and a black fedora. Is this wise? No. Does it look like street clothes? No, which I think is the point....
Grumpy Bump?
- Have a bump on me Old Horse... - I'm sure its just me, but I've seen Sting three times, once with the Police 2x on his own, and I have found him in concert to be the most boring git on the planet. So much so that the last time my wife found it hilarious that I was even bothering to go again, and yes he was still boring. I love his music on record, especially the Police, but his tendency to wander live into this extended cod reggae stuff while singing a succession of Woy - oy - oy - Oy's and stripped to the waist does me in. However, I know many people love him live. What sort of a heathen does that make me ???? Am I alone in this? Anyhow, all best with the ticket sale. Chop

One word of warning. I used to do a lot of lead vocal at the same time as bass stuff. I found with practice I could sing over 90% of the basslines more or less wherever the bassline needed to go, BUT I could only do it by sticking exactly to where the syllables coincided with where I should be on the bass. Like McCartney doing Silly Love songs, which we used to cover, listen to how closely he follows the bass rhythm. Result? I found the singing lacked spontaneity and life as did the bass playing, and neither as a separate skill really got better over time. Doing one or the other would be my recommendation if you can. But that may be just my incompetence..

Now here's something that's sorely needed by many players....

Truly excellent idea. They should give one away with every new bass. Oops they do, just not quite in the right place... -
In the early 70's my wife saw Lizzy ELEVEN times at the Greyhound in Croydon, she says two or three with Eric Bell. Had a Pepsi with Brian Robertson. I was impressed...I married her...

About 70 / 30 pick / fingers. Used to be all pick. With a pick playing 70's / 80's rock & originals, like the ease of muting strings with the flat of hand, and versatility of having muted and unmuted in same song.

That is just jaw droppingly beautiful music -
I'll join in... Unlike practically everyone I've owned very few basses, tho' been playing since 1977. (alright, long gap from 1988 to 2006). Always tended to like a bass, gig it to death and then sell it and buy another... So, first in last out Hayman 40/40 sunburst bought in 1977 had the sort of action you could drive a 747 under Shergold Marathon black 1977 74 Fender Jazz bought in 1979 ( got £250 for it, why oh why did I ever sell this for an...) Aria Pro 2 1981 2 pick ups, great neck, with hindsight nothing like the bottom end or flexibility of the Jazz Now Geddy Lee jazz with John East pre. Still want an original Jazz
