Cat used to disappear into next county if I fired up the sax. Curiously she's OK now, so I must have improved.

Tips on finding other amateur musicians to jam with after 30?
lownote replied to waylander's topic in General Discussion
Blues jams are a fecund source of contacts if you're into blues. Even if you're not. My blues jam members also play all sorts of other stuff in other bands. My personal experience of Join My Band - nutcases and wannabes. Maybe they think the same of me. If you're in a rural area or other music wasteland you will be very lucky... Also, over 10 years I've seen the market change. When I started at blues jams I was often the only bassist there so got a lot of experience over an evening; in recent times every fourth attendee has had a bass. Dunno why, maybe its the growth in online learning, like SBL. -

Didn't Scott Devine acquire one with a bass a while back and insist on keeping it on.

I oil/wax/ treat my furniture. It's the same thing. I'm sure in theory wood doesn't need oiling... does nature have some symbiote flitting round the trees with a tin of pledge and a duster? 'course not, but living wood isn't dead wood. and furntiure / basses are dead wood. and if oil/wax/ etc keeps my sideboard looking nice and healthy, I submit prercisely the same is true of a fb. Not a maple one. But a rosewood, etc one.

I'm trying to think what from my experience recruiting people could help. Erm... one thing is: remember, they want to fill their course with interesting likeable people who are going to make the most of the experience, as well as being good at music. So either be astonishingly good at what you do, or be adequate at what you do and have something else fascinating and likeable.

Although be aware they hold their value very well usually. Which is good when you're selling but a squeeze if you're buying.

PJB Cab 27. Two 7" drivers and tweeter, rated at 200w 8ohm. Cover. £150 + £25 postage Great condition, but two marks on each side of the cab. These are not at all obvious to the eye in normal lighting, I have tried to capture them with flash - one faint scrape mark, plus another faint scrape mark with a small hole in the tolex. I have the original box with packing so posting is fine, although collection would be cheaper for you and easier all round. ** I've finally to decided to keep this as my small gig/ practice cab so I'm taking it off list and won't be bumping it. But if you see this post in future and fancy it feel free to drop me a PM **

Ha! That's a bit like going on a Christian forum and asking, 'this Jesus geeza, was he for real?' Speaking personally I've had their Two 10 and One 10. Both amazing, loud, light, expensive. Be prepared for another hundred replies in short order. PS you might want to get a mod to move this post to Bass Cabs

It doesn't quite answer my original question about oomph, but having sold my Nano and thought I'd sold the PJB 47 on a whim I partnered the Ashdown head with the PJ 27. I don't know about the oomph as I say but the mellow sound is dope and well good enough for a keeper set up. Looks like a mushroom with the amp overhang but wot the fox.

If I daisy chain two cabs of different specs in terms of numbers of drivers and power but the same ohm-age, how does the head distribute the power between to the two cabs? For example, say I couple a Phil Jones C8 (8x5") 800w 8 ohms with a Cab 47 (4x7") 300w 8 ohms. Does one cab get more power than t'other?

Ha. When I joined my first serious band I really wanted their approval, so after the first couple of rehearsals I asked the drummer if what I was doing was OK for him. "Dunno, didn't listen to you" was the laconic reply.

Sax god Charlie Parker used to say something along the lines of he'd rehearse and practise the derrière off his planned numbers, then on the day simply let his hands and horn do their own thing. Only thing I'd add is a little but important thing. I always used to practise sitting down. Then I got in a band and played standing up. Surprisingly it makes a difference and threw me for a bit.

Dunlops for me. Tension is important to enjoyment and its a very personal thing. Some are really stiff and unbending, others are floppy. Personally I can't do Thomastik Infeld - too floppy, others love them. It's worth asking a good dealer like Strings Direct for their thoughts on tension. A big tip if you're new to flats. Some breeds seem impossibly sticky and un-smooth when first used. This goes in a short while if you keep using them and they'll go silky smooth. If you don't know this it's all too easy to give up in annoyance. Just give them a couple of days.
